Genesis 27
1 Isaac was old and going blind. He called for Esau, his oldest son, and said, “My son.” “I'm here,” Esau replied.
Isaac devenait vieux, et ses yeux s’étaient affaiblis au point qu’il ne voyait plus. Alors il appela Ésaü, son fils aîné, et lui dit: Mon fils! Et il lui répondit: Me voici!
2 “I'm old now,” said Isaac, “I may die soon, who knows?
Isaac dit: Voici donc, je suis vieux, je ne connais pas le jour de ma mort.
3 So please take your bow and arrows and go hunting in the countryside for some meat for me.
Maintenant donc, je te prie, prends tes armes, ton carquois et ton arc, va dans les champs, et chasse-moi du gibier.
4 Make me that tasty food that I love and bring it to me to eat, so I can bless you before I die.”
Fais-moi un mets comme j’aime, et apporte-le-moi à manger, afin que mon âme te bénisse avant que je meure.
5 Rebekah heard what Isaac told his son Esau. So when Esau left to go hunting in the countryside for wild game,
Rebecca écouta ce qu’Isaac disait à Ésaü, son fils. Et Ésaü s’en alla dans les champs, pour chasser du gibier et pour le rapporter.
6 Rebekah told her son Jacob, “Listen! I heard your father tell your brother,
Puis Rebecca dit à Jacob, son fils: Voici, j’ai entendu ton père qui parlait ainsi à Ésaü, ton frère:
7 ‘Get me some wild game and make me some tasty food so I can eat it and then bless you in the presence of the Lord before I die.’
Apporte-moi du gibier et fais-moi un mets que je mangerai; et je te bénirai devant l’Éternel avant ma mort.
8 Now then, my son, listen to me and do exactly what I tell you.
Maintenant, mon fils, écoute ma voix à l’égard de ce que je te commande.
9 Go to the flock and bring me two nice young goats. I'll cook them and make the tasty food your father loves.
Va me prendre au troupeau deux bons chevreaux; j’en ferai pour ton père un mets comme il aime;
10 Then you take it to your father to eat, so he can bless you in the presence of the Lord before he dies.”
et tu le porteras à manger à ton père, afin qu’il te bénisse avant sa mort.
11 “But listen,” Jacob replied to his mother Rebekah, “my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I'm a smooth man.
Jacob répondit à sa mère: Voici, Ésaü, mon frère, est velu, et je n’ai point de poil.
12 Maybe my father will notice when he touches me. Then it will look like I'm deceiving him and I'll bring a curse down on myself instead of a blessing.”
Peut-être mon père me touchera-t-il, et je passerai à ses yeux pour un menteur, et je ferai venir sur moi la malédiction, et non la bénédiction.
13 “Let the curse fall on me, my son,” his mother replied. “Just do what I tell you. Go and get the young goats for me.”
Sa mère lui dit: Que cette malédiction, mon fils, retombe sur moi! Écoute seulement ma voix, et va me les prendre.
14 So Jacob went and got them and took them to his mother, and she made some tasty food, the way his father loved.
Jacob alla les prendre, et les apporta à sa mère, qui fit un mets comme son père aimait.
15 Then Rebekah went and got her older son Esau's best clothes that she had at home and put them on Jacob her younger son.
Ensuite, Rebecca prit les vêtements d’Ésaü, son fils aîné, les plus beaux qui se trouvaient à la maison, et elle les fit mettre à Jacob, son fils cadet.
16 She put the goatskins on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.
Elle couvrit ses mains de la peau des chevreaux, et son cou qui était sans poil.
17 Then she handed her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she'd made.
Et elle plaça dans la main de Jacob, son fils, le mets et le pain qu’elle avait préparés.
18 He went in to see his father, and called out, “My father, I'm here.” “Which son are you?” Isaac asked.
Il vint vers son père, et dit: Mon père! Et Isaac dit: Me voici! Qui es-tu, mon fils?
19 “It's me Esau, your firstborn son,” Jacob told his father. “I did what you told me. So please sit up and eat some of my wild game meat so you can bless me.”
Jacob répondit à son père: Je suis Ésaü, ton fils aîné; j’ai fait ce que tu m’as dit. Lève-toi, je te prie, assieds-toi, et mange de mon gibier, afin que ton âme me bénisse.
20 “How did you find an animal so fast, my son?” Isaac asked. “Because the Lord your God sent it my way,” Jacob replied.
Isaac dit à son fils: Eh quoi! Tu en as déjà trouvé, mon fils! Et Jacob répondit: C’est que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, l’a fait venir devant moi.
21 “Come over here so I can touch you, my son,” Isaac told Jacob, “so I can tell if you're really my son Esau or not.”
Isaac dit à Jacob: Approche donc, et que je te touche, mon fils, pour savoir si tu es mon fils Ésaü, ou non.
22 Jacob went over to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “It's Jacob's voice but Esau's hands.”
Jacob s’approcha d’Isaac, son père, qui le toucha, et dit: La voix est la voix de Jacob, mais les mains sont les mains d’Ésaü.
23 Isaac didn't realize it was really Jacob because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's, so Isaac got ready to bless him.
Il ne le reconnut pas, parce que ses mains étaient velues, comme les mains d’Ésaü, son frère; et il le bénit.
24 “It's really you, my son Esau?” he asked again. “Yes, it's me,” Jacob replied.
Il dit: C’est toi qui es mon fils Ésaü? Et Jacob répondit: C’est moi.
25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your wild game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.” Jacob brought some for him to eat, as well as some wine for him to drink.
Isaac dit: Sers-moi, et que je mange du gibier de mon fils, afin que mon âme te bénisse. Jacob le servit, et il mangea; il lui apporta aussi du vin, et il but.
26 Afterwards he said to Isaac, “Come here and kiss me, my son.”
Alors Isaac, son père, lui dit: Approche donc, et baise-moi, mon fils.
27 So Jacob went over and kissed him, and Isaac could smell the clothes Jacob was wearing. So he went ahead with the blessing, saying to himself, “See—the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed.”
Jacob s’approcha, et le baisa. Isaac sentit l’odeur de ses vêtements; puis il le bénit, et dit: Voici, l’odeur de mon fils est comme l’odeur d’un champ que l’Éternel a béni.
28 “May God use the dew of heaven and fertile land to give you rich harvests of grain and new wine!
Que Dieu te donne de la rosée du ciel Et de la graisse de la terre, Du blé et du vin en abondance!
29 May the people of different nations serve you and bow down to you. May you rule over your relatives, and may they bow down to you. May everyone who curses you be cursed, and may everyone who bless you be blessed.”
Que des peuples te soient soumis, Et que des nations se prosternent devant toi! Sois le maître de tes frères, Et que les fils de ta mère se prosternent devant toi! Maudit soit quiconque te maudira, Et béni soit quiconque te bénira.
30 After Isaac finished blessing Jacob—in fact Jacob had just left his father—Esau returned from his hunting trip.
Isaac avait fini de bénir Jacob, et Jacob avait à peine quitté son père Isaac, qu’Ésaü, son frère, revint de la chasse.
31 He had also made some tasty food, and took it to his father. Esau said to Isaac, “Sit up, my father, and eat some of my wild game so you can bless me.”
Il fit aussi un mets, qu’il porta à son père; et il dit à son père: Que mon père se lève et mange du gibier de son fils, afin que ton âme me bénisse!
32 “Who are you?” Isaac asked him. “I'm your son, your firstborn son, Esau,” he replied.
Isaac, son père, lui dit: Qui es-tu? Et il répondit: Je suis ton fils aîné, Ésaü.
33 Isaac started to shake all over and asked, “So who was it who went hunting game and then brought it to me? I ate it all before you came back and I blessed him. His blessing will remain.”
Isaac fut saisi d’une grande, d’une violente émotion, et il dit: Qui est donc celui qui a chassé du gibier, et me l’a apporté? J’ai mangé de tout avant que tu vinsses, et je l’ai béni. Aussi sera-t-il béni.
34 When Esau heard his father's words, he cried out in great anger and bitterness, and pleaded with his father, “Please bless me too, my father!”
Lorsque Ésaü entendit les paroles de son père, il poussa de forts cris, pleins d’amertume, et il dit à son père: Bénis-moi aussi, mon père!
35 But Isaac replied, “You brother came and deceived me—he stole your blessing!”
Isaac dit: Ton frère est venu avec ruse, et il a enlevé ta bénédiction.
36 “Isn't he well named—Jacob the deceiver!” said Esau. “He's deceived me twice. First he took my birthright, and now he's stolen my blessing! Haven't you kept a blessing for me?”
Ésaü dit: Est-ce parce qu’on l’a appelé du nom de Jacob qu’il m’a supplanté deux fois? Il a enlevé mon droit d’aînesse, et voici maintenant qu’il vient d’enlever ma bénédiction. Et il dit: N’as-tu point réservé de bénédiction pour moi?
37 Isaac replied to Esau. “I have made him ruler over you, and have said that all his relatives will be his servants. I have declared that he will be well supplied with grain and new wine. So what is left that I can do for you, my son?”
Isaac répondit, et dit à Ésaü: Voici, je l’ai établi ton maître, et je lui ai donné tous ses frères pour serviteurs, je l’ai pourvu de blé et de vin: que puis-je donc faire pour toi, mon fils?
38 “Do you only have one blessing, my father?” Esau asked. “Please bless me too!” Then Esau began to cry very loudly.
Ésaü dit à son père: N’as-tu que cette seule bénédiction, mon père? Bénis-moi aussi, mon père! Et Ésaü éleva la voix, et pleura.
39 Then his father Isaac declared, “Listen! You will live far away from fertile land, far from the dew of heaven that falls from above.
Isaac, son père, répondit, et lui dit: Voici! Ta demeure sera privée de la graisse de la terre Et de la rosée du ciel, d’en haut.
40 You will make a living by using your sword, and you will be your brother's servant. But when you rebel, you will throw off his yoke from your neck.”
Tu vivras de ton épée, Et tu seras asservi à ton frère; Mais en errant librement çà et là, Tu briseras son joug de dessus ton cou.
41 From then on Esau hated Jacob because of his father's blessing. Esau said to himself, “Soon the time will come when I'll mourn my father's death. Then I'll kill my brother Jacob!”
Ésaü conçut de la haine contre Jacob, à cause de la bénédiction dont son père l’avait béni; et Ésaü disait en son cœur: Les jours du deuil de mon père vont approcher, et je tuerai Jacob, mon frère.
42 However, Rebekah found out what Esau was saying, so she sent for Jacob. “Look,” she told him, “your brother Esau is making himself feel better by making plans to kill you.
On rapporta à Rebecca les paroles d’Ésaü, son fils aîné. Elle fit alors appeler Jacob, son fils cadet, et elle lui dit: Voici, Ésaü, ton frère, veut tirer vengeance de toi, en te tuant.
43 So, my son, listen carefully to what I tell you. Leave immediately and go to my brother Laban in Haram.
Maintenant, mon fils, écoute ma voix! Lève-toi, fuis chez Laban, mon frère, à Charan;
44 Stay with him for a while until your brother's anger cools down.
et reste auprès de lui quelque temps, jusqu’à ce que la fureur de ton frère s’apaise,
45 Once he's cooled down and forgets what you did to him, I'll send for you to come back. Why should I lose both of you in a single day?”
jusqu’à ce que la colère de ton frère se détourne de toi, et qu’il oublie ce que tu lui as fait. Alors je te ferai revenir. Pourquoi serais-je privée de vous deux en un même jour?
46 Then Rebekah went and told Isaac, “I'm so sick of these Hittite women—they're ruining my life! If Jacob also marries a Hittite woman like them, one of the local people, I'd rather die!”
Rebecca dit à Isaac: Je suis dégoûtée de la vie, à cause des filles de Heth. Si Jacob prend une femme, comme celles-ci, parmi les filles de Heth, parmi les filles du pays, à quoi me sert la vie?
