Genesis 26
1 There was a famine in the country—not the one that happened before in Abraham's time, but a later one. So Isaac moved to Gerar in the territory of Abimelech, king of the Philistines.
Or il y eut une famine au pays, outre la première famine qui avait été du temps d'Abraham; et Isaac s'en alla vers Abimélec Roi des Philistins, à Guérar.
2 The Lord appeared to Isaac and told him, “Don't go to Egypt—live in the country that I tell you to.
Car l'Eternel lui était apparu, et lui avait dit: Ne descends point en Egypte; demeure au pays que je te dirai.
3 Stay here in this country. I will be with you and I will bless you, because I'm going to give you and your descendants all these lands. I will keep the solemn promise that I swore to Abraham your father.
Demeure dans ce pays-là, et je serai avec toi, et je te bénirai; car je te donnerai et à ta postérité tous ces pays-ci, et je ratifierai le serment que j'ai fait à ton père Abraham.
4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and I will give them all these lands. All the nations of the earth will be blessed by your descendants,
Je multiplierai ta postérité comme les étoiles des cieux; et je donnerai ces pays-ci à ta postérité; et toutes les nations de la terre seront bénies en ta semence.
5 because Abraham did what I told him, and kept my requirements, my commands, my regulations, and my laws.”
Parce qu'Abraham a obéi à ma voix, et qu'il a gardé mon ordonnance, mes commandements, mes statuts, et mes lois.
6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.
Isaac donc demeura à Guérar.
7 When the men there asked him about his wife, he told them, “She's my sister,” because he was afraid. He said to himself, “If I say she's my wife, the men here will kill me to get Rebekah, because she's so beautiful.”
Et quand les gens du lieu s'enquirent qui était sa femme, il répondit: C'est ma sœur; car il craignait de dire: C'est ma femme; de peur, [disait-il], qu'il n'arrive que les habitants du lieu ne me tuent à cause de Rébecca; car elle est belle à voir.
8 But later on, after he'd been there a while, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, happened to look out the window and saw Isaac lovingly fondling his wife Rebekah.
Or il arriva après qu'il y eut passé quelques jours qu'Abimélec, Roi des Philistins, regardait par la fenêtre, et voici, il vit Isaac, qui se jouait avec Rébecca sa femme.
9 Abimelech sent for Isaac and complained. “From what I saw she's clearly your wife!” he said. “Why on earth did you say, ‘She's my sister’?” “Because I thought I'd be killed because of her,” Isaac replied.
Alors Abimélec appela Isaac, et lui dit: Voici, c'est véritablement ta femme; et comment as-tu dit: C'est ma sœur? Et Isaac lui répondit: C'est parce que j'ai dit: Afin que peut-être je ne meure à cause d'elle.
10 “Why would you do this to us?” Abimelech asked. “One of the men here might have slept with your wife, and you would have made us all guilty!”
Et Abimélec dit: Que nous as-tu fait? Il s'en est peu fallu que quelqu'un du peuple n'ait couché avec ta femme, et que tu ne nous aies fait tomber dans le crime.
11 Abimelech issued orders to all the people, warning them, “Anyone who touches this man or his wife will be executed.”
Abimélec donc fit une ordonnance à tout le peuple, en disant: Celui qui touchera cet homme, ou sa femme, sera certainement puni de mort.
12 Isaac sowed grain that year, and the Lord blessed him with a harvest that was a hundred times what he planted.
Et Isaac sema en cette terre-là, et il recueillit cette année-là le centuple; car l'Eternel le bénit.
13 He became a rich man, and his wealth steadily increased until he was very rich.
Cet homme donc accrut, et allait toujours en augmentant, jusqu'à ce qu'il fût merveilleusement accru.
14 He owned many flocks of sheep and herds of cattle, as well as many slaves. He had so much that the Philistines became jealous of him.
Et il eut du menu et du gros bétail, et un grand nombre de serviteurs; et les Philistins lui portèrent envie:
15 So the Philistines used dirt to block up all the wells his father Abraham's servants had dug.
Tellement qu'ils bouchèrent les puits que les serviteurs de son père avaient creusés du temps de son père Abraham, et les remplirent de terre.
16 Then Abimelech told Isaac, “You have to leave our country, because you've become much too powerful for us.”
Abimélec aussi dit à Isaac: Retire-toi d'avec nous; car tu es devenu beaucoup plus puissant que nous.
17 So Isaac moved away and set up his tents in the Gerar Valley where he settled down.
Isaac donc partit de là, et alla camper dans la vallée de Guérar, et y demeura.
18 He unblocked the wells that had been dug in his father Abraham's time—the ones the Philistines had blocked after the death of Abraham. He gave them the same names his father had.
Et Isaac creusa encore les puits d'eau qu'on avait creusés du temps d'Abraham son père, lesquels les Philistins avaient bouchés après la mort d'Abraham, et les appela des mêmes noms dont son père les avait appelés.
19 Isaac's servants also dug a new well in the valley and found spring water.
Et les serviteurs d'Isaac creusèrent dans cette vallée, et y trouvèrent un puits d'eau vive.
20 But the herdsmen from Gerar argued with Isaac's herdsmen, claiming, “That's our water!” So Isaac named the well, “Argument,” because they argued with him.
Mais les bergers de Guérar eurent un démêlé avec les bergers d'Isaac, disant: L'eau est à nous. Et il appela le puits, Hések; parce qu'ils avaient contesté avec lui.
21 He had another well dug, and they argued over that one too. He named the well, “Opposition.”
Ensuite ils creusèrent un autre puits, pour lequel ils contestèrent aussi; et il appela son nom, Sitnah.
22 So they moved on from there and he had another well dug. This time there was no argument so he named the well, “Freedom,” saying, “Now the Lord has given us freedom to expand and be successful in this land.”
Alors il se retira de là, et creusa un autre puits, pour lequel ils ne contestèrent point, et il le nomma Réhoboth, en disant: C'est parce que l'Eternel nous a maintenant mis au large, et que nous nous sommes agrandis dans ce pays.
23 From there he moved on to Beersheba.
Et de là il monta à Béer-Sébah.
24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father. Don't be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and give you many descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”
Et l'Eternel lui apparut cette même nuit, et lui dit: Je suis le Dieu d'Abraham ton père, ne crains point; car je [suis) avec toi, je te bénirai, et je multiplierai ta postérité à cause d'Abraham mon serviteur.
25 Isaac built an altar and worshiped the Lord. He also set up his tent, and his servants dug a well there.
Et il bâtit là un autel, et invoqua le nom de l'Eternel, et il y dressa ses tentes; et les serviteurs d'Isaac y creusèrent un puits.
26 Sometime later Abimelech came from Gerar to see Isaac, along with Ahuzzath his advisor, and Phicol the commander of his army.
Et Abimélec vint à lui de Guérar avec Ahuzat son ami, et Picol chef de son armée.
27 “Why have you come to see me?” Isaac asked them. “Previously you hated me and told me to leave!”
Mais Isaac leur dit: Pourquoi venez-vous vers moi, puisque vous me haïssez, et que vous m'avez renvoyé d'auprès de vous?
28 “Now we realize that the Lord is with you,” they replied. “So we agreed that we should make a sworn agreement with you.
Et ils répondirent: Nous avons vu clairement que l'Eternel est avec toi; et nous avons dit: Qu'il y ait maintenant un serment avec exécration entre nous, [c'est-à-dire], entre nous et toi; et traitons alliance avec toi.
29 You'll promise not to harm us in the same way we've never hurt you. You'll agree that we've always treated you well, and when we asked you to leave we did so kindly. Now look at how the Lord is blessing you!”
Si tu nous fais du mal, comme nous ne t'avons point touché, et comme nous ne t'avons fait que du bien, et t'avons laissé aller en paix; toi qui es maintenant béni de l'Eternel.
30 So Isaac had a special meal prepared to celebrate the agreement. They ate and drank,
Alors il leur fit un festin, et ils mangèrent et burent.
31 and got up early in the morning and they each swore oaths to one other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they left in peace.
Et ils se levèrent de bon matin, et jurèrent l'un à l'autre. Puis Isaac les renvoya, et ils s'en allèrent d'avec lui en paix.
32 It was that very day when Isaac's servants who'd been digging a well came and told him, “We've found water!”
Il arriva en ce même jour, que les serviteurs d'Isaac vinrent, et lui parlèrent touchant ce puits qu'ils avaient creusé, et lui dirent: Nous avons trouvé de l'eau.
33 So Isaac named the well, “Oath,” and that's why the name of the town is “Well of the Oath” (Beersheba) to this day.
Et il l'appela Sibah; c'est pourquoi le nom de la ville a été Béer-Sébah jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
34 When Esau was 40, he married Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, as well as Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite.
Or Esaü, âgé de quarante ans, prit pour femmes Judith, fille de Béeri Héthien, et Basmath fille d'Elon Héthien;
35 They caused Isaac and Rebekah a great deal of grief.
Lesquelles furent en amertume d'esprit à Isaac et à Rébecca.
