Exodus 1
1 These were the names of the sons of Israel (Jacob) who came with him to Egypt along with their families:
Und dies sind die Namen der Söhne Israels, die nach Ägypten gekommen sind. Mit Jakob sind sie gekommen, jeder mit seiner Familie:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;
Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Juda,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;
Issakar, Zabulon, Benjamin,
4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
Dan, Naphtali, Gad und Asser.
5 Jacob had 70 descendants there, including Joseph who was already in Egypt.
Aller Seelen der aus Jakob Entsprungenen waren es siebzig; Joseph aber war schon in Ägypten gewesen.
6 Eventually Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died.
Da starben Joseph und alle seine Brüder, jenes ganze Geschlecht.
7 However, the Israelites had many children and their numbers increased rapidly. In fact there were so many of them that they became very powerful—the country was full of them.
Die Israeliten aber waren fruchtbar geworden; sie wurden überreich, wuchsen und erstarkten mehr und mehr, und das Land ward ihrer voll.
8 Then a new king came to power who didn't know anything about Joseph.
Da trat in Ägypten ein neuer König auf, der von Joseph nichts wußte.
9 He conferred with his fellow Egyptians and said, “Look at these Israelites—there are more than them than us, and they're more powerful than us.
Er sprach zu seinem Volk: "Das Volk der Söhne Israels wird uns zu viel und zu stark.
10 We've got to make plan to deal with them before they become so many that if there's a war they'll side with our enemies and fight us, and flee the country.”
Wohlan! Überlisten wir es, daß es nicht weiter wachse! Sonst könnte es sich, falls ein Krieg wider uns ausbreche, zu unseren Gegnern schlagen und gegen uns kämpfen und dann aus dem Lande ziehen."
11 So the Egyptians made them do forced labor and put taskmasters in charge of them. They used them to build the storage towns of Pithom and Rameses.
so setzten sie Fronvögte darüber, um mit Fronarbeiten es zu drücken. Und so baute es Pitom und Ramses zu Vorratsstädten für Pharao aus.
12 But the more the Israelites were mistreated, the more they grew in numbers and spread out—and the more the Egyptians detested them.
Aber je mehr sie es drückten, desto mehr nahm es zu und breitete sich aus. Da graute jenen vor den Israeliten.
13 The Egyptians worked the Israelites brutally,
Und so machten die Ägypter die Israeliten gewaltsam zu Sklaven
14 making their lives a misery. They made them do hard labor, building with mortar and brick, and all kind of heavy work in the fields. In all of this hard labor they treated them brutally.
und verbitterten ihnen das Leben mit harter Fron in Lehm und Ziegeln und allerlei Fron auf dem Felde. All ihr Frondienst, den man ihnen aufgelegt hatte, geschah mit Plackerei.
15 Then the king gave orders to the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah.
Dann sprach der König von Ägypten zu den Hebammen der Hebräerinnen; die eine hieß Siphra, die andere Pua.
16 He told them, “When you assist the Hebrew women during childbirth, if you see it's a boy, kill him; but if it's a girl, let her live.”
Er sagte: "Entbindet ihr die Hebräerinnen, dann beseht ihr die Teile. Ist es ein Knabe, dann tötet ihr ihn. Ist es ein Mädchen, mag es leben."
17 But because the midwives revered God, they didn't do what the king of Egypt had ordered. They let the boys live as well.
Die Hebammen aber fürchteten Gott, und so taten sie nicht, was ihnen der König von Ägypten befohlen, sondern ließen die Knaben am Leben.
18 The king of Egypt called the midwives in and demanded to know, “Why have you done this— letting the male children live?”
Da schrie der König von Ägypten die Hebammen an und sprach zu ihnen: "Warum habt ihr dies getan? Ihr ließet die Knaben am Leben."
19 “Hebrew women aren't like Egyptian women,” the midwives told Pharaoh. “They give birth more easily—they have them before we midwives arrive.”
Da sprachen die Hebammen zu Pharao: "Die Hebräerinnen sind nicht wie die ägyptischen Weiber; sie sind wie Tiere. Bevor die Hebamme zu ihnen kommt, haben sie geboren."
20 God treated the midwives well, and the people increased in number so there were even more of them.
Und Gott ließ es den Hebammen gut ergehen. Das Volk aber wuchs und wurde sehr stark.
21 Because the midwives revered God, he gave them families of their own.
Weil aber die Hebammen Gott gefürchtet hatten, verlieh er ihnen Vermögen.
22 Then Pharaoh issued this order to all his people: “Throw every Hebrew boy that's born into the Nile, but let every girl live.”
Pharao aber befahl seinem ganzen Volke: "Ihr sollt alle Knaben, die geboren werden, in den Nil werfen. Die Mädchen aber sollt ihr am Leben lassen."
