Ecclesiastes 3
1 Everything has its own time—a time for all that happens here:
Il y a un temps fixé pour tout, un temps pour toute chose sous le ciel:
2 A time of birth, and a time of death. A time of planting, and a time of harvest.
un temps pour naître, et un temps pour mourir; un temps pour planter, et un temps pour arracher ce qui a été planté;
3 A time of killing, and a time of healing. A time of tearing down, and a time of building up.
un temps pour tuer, et un temps pour guérir; un temps pour abattre, et un temps pour bâtir;
4 A time of crying, and a time of laughing. A time of mourning, and a time of dancing.
un temps pour pleurer, et un temps pour rire; un temps pour se lamenter, et un temps pour danser;
5 A time of throwing away stones, and a time of gathering up stones. A time of embracing, and a time of avoiding embracing.
un temps pour jeter des pierres, et un temps pour en ramasser; un temps pour embrasser, et un temps pour s’abstenir d’embrassements.
6 A time of searching, and a time of giving up searching. A time of keeping, and a time of throwing away.
un temps pour chercher, et un temps pour perdre; un temps pour garder, et un temps pour jeter;
7 A time of tearing, and a time of mending. A time of keeping quiet, a time of speaking up.
un temps pour déchirer, et un temps pour coudre; un temps pour se taire, et un temps pour parler;
8 A time of loving, and a time of hating. A time of warfare, and a time of peace.
un temps pour aimer, et un temps pour haïr; un temps pour la guerre, et un temps pour la paix.
9 So what do you get for all your hard work?
Quel est l’avantage, pour celui qui travaille, de la peine qu’il se donne?
10 I have examined what God gives us to do.
J’ai examiné le labeur auquel Dieu impose aux enfants des hommes de se livrer:
11 Everything God does is beautifully timed, and even though he has also placed the idea of eternity in our minds, we can't fully understand what God does from beginning to end.
Dieu a fait toute chose belle en son temps, il a mis aussi dans leur cœur l’éternité, mais sans que l’homme puisse comprendre l’œuvre que Dieu fait, du commencement jusqu’à la fin.
12 I concluded that there's nothing better than being happy and looking for the good in life.
Et j’ai reconnu qu’il n’y a rien de meilleur pour eux que de se réjouir et se donner du bien-être pendant leur vie,
13 In addition everyone should eat and drink and enjoy their work—this is God's gift to us.
et en même temps que si un homme mange et boit, et jouit du bien-être au milieu de son travail, c’est là un don de Dieu.
14 I also concluded that everything God does lasts forever: nothing can be added to it or taken away from it. God acts in this way so that people may stand in awe of him.
J’ai reconnu que tout ce que Dieu fait durera toujours, qu’il n’y a rien à y ajouter ni rien à en retrancher: Dieu agit ainsi afin qu’on le craigne.
15 Whatever was, is; and whatever will be, has been, and God examines the whole of time.
Ce qui se fait existait déjà, et ce qui se fera a déjà été: Dieu ramène ce qui est passé.
16 I also observed that here on earth there was evil even in the place where there was supposed to be justice; even where things were meant to be right, there was evil.
J’ai encore vu sous le soleil, qu’au siège même du droit il y a la méchanceté, et au lieu de la justice, il y a l’iniquité.
17 But then I thought to myself, “Ultimately God will judge both those who do right and those who do wrong, and every deed and action, at the appointed time.”
J’ai dit dans mon cœur: « Dieu jugera le juste et le méchant, car il y a là un temps pour toute chose, et pour toute œuvre. »
18 I also thought to myself, “Regarding what happens to human beings—God proves to us that we're no better than animals.”
J’ai dit dans mon cœur au sujet des enfants des hommes: « Cela arrive ainsi, afin que Dieu les éprouve, et qu’ils voient qu’ils sont quant à eux-mêmes semblables aux bêtes. »
19 For what happens to human beings is the same as what happens to animals—in the same way one dies, the other dies too. They all have the breath of life—so regarding any advantage human beings have over animals, there is none. Definitely this is very hard to understand!
Car le sort des enfants des hommes est le sort de la bête: ils ont un même sort; comme l’un meurt, l’autre meurt aussi, il n’y a qu’un même souffle pour tous; l’avantage de l’homme sur la bête est nul, car tout est vanité.
20 They all end up in the same place—they all came from dust, and they all return to dust.
Tout va dans un même lieu; tout est sorti de la poussière, et tout retourne à la poussière.
21 Who really knows whether the breath of life of human beings goes up above, and the breath of life of animals goes down below to the earth?
Qui connaît le souffle des enfants des hommes, qui monte en haut, et le souffle de la bête, qui descend en bas vers la terre?
22 So I concluded that there's nothing better than for people to enjoy their work. This is what we are meant to do. For who can bring anyone back from the dead to show them what will happen after they die?
Et j’ai vu qu’il n’y a rien de mieux pour l’homme que de se réjouir dans ses œuvres: c’est là sa part. Car qui lui donnera de découvrir ce qui arrivera après lui?
