Acts 8
1 Saul approved of his killing. On that very day terrible persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and everyone except for the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.
Saul applaudissait à ce meurtre. Le même jour, une violente persécution éclata sur l'église de Jérusalem; tous les fidèles, excepté les apôtres, se dispersèrent dans les campagnes de la Judée et de la Samarie.
2 (Some faithful followers of God buried Stephen, with great mourning.)
Toutefois des hommes religieux enterrèrent Etienne en faisant de grandes lamentations.
3 But Saul set about destroying the church, going from house to house, dragging both men and women off to prison.
Saul désolait l'église; il pénétrait dans les maisons, en arrachait les hommes et les femmes, et les faisait jeter en prison.
4 Those who had been scattered spread the word wherever they went.
Ceux donc qui étaient dispersés, s'en allèrent de lieu en lieu annonçant la Parole.
5 Philip went to the town of Samaria, and told them about the Messiah.
Philippe entre autres, s'étant rendu dans une ville de Samarie, y prêcha le Messie, et les foules s'attachèrent toutes à ce qu'il leur disait, quand elles apprirent et virent les miracles qu'il faisait;
6 When the crowds heard what Philip was saying and saw the miracles he did they all paid attention to what he was telling them.
car les esprits impurs sortaient de plusieurs possédés, en poussant de grands cris. Beaucoup de paralytiques et de boiteux furent aussi guéris;
7 Many were freed from possession by evil spirits that screamed as they came out, and many who were lame or disabled were healed.
et ce fut une grande joie dans cette ville.
8 The people who lived in the city were overjoyed.
Il s'y trouvait déjà un homme nommé Simon, qui exerçait la magie et qui émerveillait le peuple de Samarie. Il se donnait pour un grand personnage,
9 Now there was a man named Simon who lived in the city. He practiced sorcery. He claimed that he was someone very important, and had astounded the people of Samaria
et tous, petits et grands, s'étaient attachés à lui, et disaient: «C'est la Puissance de Dieu, celle qu'on appelle la Grande Puissance.»
10 so they all paid attention to him. From the lowest to the highest in society they said, “This man is ‘God the Great Power.’”
Ils s'étaient donc attachés à lui, parce que, pendant assez longtemps, il les avait charmés par sa magie.
11 They were impressed by him because he had amazed them with his magic for so long.
Mais, quand ils eurent cru Philippe, qui leur annonçait ce qui a trait au royaume de Dieu et à la personne de Jésus-Christ, hommes et femmes se firent baptiser.
12 But when they believed in what Philip told them about the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Simon même crut aussi, et, après s'être fait baptiser, il ne quittait plus Philippe, et il s'extasiait à la vue des miracles et des prodiges qui s'opéraient.
13 Simon too believed and was baptized. He accompanied Philip, amazed at the miraculous signs and wonders he saw.
Les apôtres, qui étaient à Jérusalem, ayant appris que la Samarie avait accueilli la parole de Dieu, y envoyèrent Pierre et Jean.
14 When the apostles back in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to visit them.
Ceux-ci, s'y étant rendus, prièrent pour que les Samaritains reçussent le Saint-Esprit,
15 When they arrived they prayed for the converts in Samaria to receive the Holy Spirit.
car il n'était encore descendu sur aucun d'eux; ils se trouvaient seulement baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus.
16 The Holy Spirit hadn't come to any of these converts yet—they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Alors les deux apôtres leur imposèrent les mains, et ils reçurent le Saint-Esprit.
17 The apostles placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
Lorsque Simon vit que le Saint-Esprit était donné par l'imposition des mains des apôtres, il leur offrit de l'argent,
18 When Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given when the apostles placed their hands on people, he offered them money.
en disant: «Donnez-moi aussi ce pouvoir, que celui à qui j'imposerai les mains reçoive le Saint-Esprit.»
19 “Give me this power, too,” he asked them, “so that anyone I place my hands on will receive the Holy Spirit.”
Pierre lui dit: «Que ton argent périsse avec toi, puisque tu as cru acquérir le don de Dieu avec de l'argent!
20 “May your money be destroyed together with you for thinking God's gift is something that can be bought!” Peter replied.
Tu n'as aucune espèce de part à cette faveur, car ton coeur n'est pas droit devant Dieu.
21 “You're not part of any of this. None of this work belongs to you, because in God's eyes your attitude is totally wrong.
Repens-toi donc de ta méchanceté, et prie le Seigneur de vouloir bien te pardonner la pensée de ton coeur;
22 Repent of your evil ways! Pray to the Lord and ask forgiveness for thinking like this.
car je m'aperçois que tu es dans un fiel bien amer et dans les liens de la méchanceté.»
23 I can see that you are full of bitter envy, and chained down by your sin.”
Simon repartit: «Priez vous-mêmes le Seigneur pour moi, afin qu'il ne m’arrive rien de ce que vous dites.»
24 “Please pray for me, that nothing you've said may happen to me!” Simon replied.
Pour eux, après avoir rendu témoignage, et prêché la parole du Seigneur, ils reprirent la route de Jérusalem et annoncerait l'évangile dans plusieurs villages des Samaritains.
25 After they had given their testimony and shared the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, sharing the good news in many Samaritan villages along the way.
Un ange du Seigneur adressa la parole à Philippe, et lui dit: «Lève-toi, et va au midi, sur la route qui descend de Jérusalem à Gaza.»
26 An angel of the Lord told Philip, “Get ready and go south to the desert road that leads from Jerusalem to Gaza.”
(Cette ville est déserte.) Il se leva et se mit en marche. Et voici, il y avait sur cette route un Éthiopien, eunuque puissant de Candace, reine d'Ethiopie, surintendant de tous ses trésors, qui était venu à Jérusalem pour adorer.
27 So Philip set out, and met an Ethiopian man, a eunuch who had a high position in the service of the Kandake, Queen of Ethiopia. He was her chief treasurer. He had gone to Jerusalem to worship there, and
Il s'en retournait, et assis sur son char, il lisait le prophète Ésaïe.
28 was returning from his trip, sitting in his chariot. He was reading out loud from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
L'Esprit dit à Philippe: «Avance, et ne quitte pas ce char.»
29 The Spirit told Philip, “Go over close to the chariot.”
Philippe, étant accouru, entendit ce seigneur qui lisait le prophète Esaïe, et il lui dit: «Comprends-tu ce que tu lis?»
30 So Philip ran over, and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. “Do you understand what you're reading?” Philip asked him.
Il lui répondit: «Eh! comment le pourrais-je, si l'on ne me guide?» Et il invita Philippe à monter s'asseoir avec lui.
31 “How can I, unless someone explains it?” the man replied. He invited Philip to get in and sit beside him.
Or, voici la teneur du passage qu'il lisait: «Il a été mené comme une brebis à la boucherie, et, comme un agneau muet devant celui qui le tond, il n'ouvre pas la bouche.
32 The Scripture passage he was reading was this: “He was led like a sheep to be slaughtered. Like a lamb is silent in front of his shearer, he didn't say a word.
C'est dans l’humiliation que son jugement est consommé.
33 He was humiliated and denied justice. No one can speak of his descendants, for his life came to an end.”
Quant aux hommes de sa génération, qui les dépeindra? car on lui a ôté la vie de dessus la terre.»
34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, who is the prophet talking about? Is it himself, or someone else?”
L'eunuque ayant pris la parole, dit à Philippe: «Je t'en prie, de qui le prophète parle-t-il ainsi? Est-ce de lui-même, ou de quelque autre?»
35 Philip started explaining, beginning from this Scripture, telling him about Jesus.
Philippe ouvrant la bouche, lui annonça Jésus en commençant par ce passage.
36 As they continued on, they came to a stretch of water. The eunuch said, “Look, there's water here—why shouldn't I be baptized?”
En poursuivant leur route, ils rencontrèrent de l'eau; l'eunuque dit: «Voici de l'eau; qu'est-ce qui empêche que je ne sois baptisé?»
[Philipppe lui dit: «Si tu crois de tout ton coeur cela est possible.» Il répondit: «Je crois que Jésus-Christ est le Fils de Dieu.»]
38 He ordered that the chariot be stopped. Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water and Philip baptized him.
Et il fit arrêter le char; puis Philippe et l'eunuque descendirent tous deux dans l'eau, et Philippe le baptisa.
39 When they came out of the water the Spirit of the Lord took Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again, but he continued on his way full of joy. Philip found himself at Azotus.
Quand ils furent sortis de l'eau. l'Esprit du Seigneur enleva Philippe: l'eunuque ne le vit plus, car, pendant qu'il continuait sa route, plein de joie,
40 He spread the good news in all the towns along the way until he arrived at Caesarea.
Philippe se trouva à Azote, d'où il alla jusqu’à Césarée, en évangélisant toutes les villes par où il passait.
