2 Kings 5

1 Naaman, the king of Aram's army commander was considered a great man by his master and highly respected, for through him the Lord had made the Arameans victorious. He was a mighty warrior, but he was a leper.

Naaman, prince de la milice du roi de Syrie, était un homme puissant auprès de son maître et honoré; car c’est par lui que le Seigneur avait sauvé la Syrie: or il était vaillant et riche, mais lépreux.

2 Some Arameans had gone on a raid and had captured a young girl from the land of Israel. She had been made a servant to Naaman's wife.

Cependant des voleurs étaient sortis de Syrie, et avaient emmené captive de la terre d’Israël une petite fille qui était au service de la femme de Naaman.

3 She told her mistress, “If only my master would go and see the prophet who lives in Samaria. I'm sure he could cure him of his leprosy.”

Celle-ci dit à sa maîtresse: Plût à Dieu que mon seigneur fût allé vers le prophète qui est à Samarie! assurément, il l’aurait guéri de la lèpre qu’il a.

4 Naaman went to his master and explained what the Israelite girl had said.

C’est pourquoi Naaman entra auprès de son maître, et lui dit: Ainsi et ainsi a parlé une fille de la terre d’Israël.

5 “You can go,” said the king of Aram, “and I will send a letter with you to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left. He took with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten sets of clothing.

Et le roi de Syrie lui dit: Va, et j’enverrai une lettre au roi d’Israël. Lorsque Naaman fut parti, et qu’il eut pris avec lui dix talents d’argent, six mille sicles d’or et dix rechanges de vêtements,

6 The letter he took to the king of Israel read: “This letter accompanies my servant Naaman, sent to you so you can heal him of his leprosy.”

Il porta au roi d’Israël la lettre du roi de Syrie en ces termes: Lorsque vous recevrez cette lettre, sachez que je vous envoie Naaman, mon serviteur, afin que vous le guérissiez de sa lèpre.

7 When the king of Israel read the letter, he ripped his clothes in panic and said, “Does this man think I'm God, having power over life and death, sending me a leper to heal? Obviously he's just trying to invent an excuse to attack me, as anyone can see!”

Et lorsque le roi d’Israël eut lu la lettre, il déchira ses vêtements, et dit: Suis-je Dieu, moi, pour que je puisse tuer et faire vivre, puisque ce roi envoie vers moi, afin que je guérisse un homme de sa lèpre? Remarquez et voyez qu’il cherche des occasions contre moi.

8 But when Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had ripped his clothes in panic, he sent a message to the king, saying: “What did you rip your clothes for? Please send the man to me, so he will be convinced there is a prophet in Israel.”

Lorsque Élisée, l’homme de Dieu, eut appris cela, c’est-à-dire que le roi d’Israël avait déchiré ses vêtements, il envoya vers lui, disant: Pourquoi avez-vous déchiré vos vêtements? Qu’il vienne à moi, et qu’il sache qu’il y a un prophète dans Israël.

9 So Naaman arrived with his horses and chariots and stood waiting at the door of Elisha's house.

Naaman vint donc avec ses chevaux et ses chars, et se tint à la porte de la maison d’Élisée.

10 Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan. Then your body will be healed, and you will be clean.”

Et Élisée lui envoya un messager, disant: Va, et lave-toi sept fois dans le Jourdain, et ta chair sera guérie, et tu deviendras net.

11 But Naaman got angry and left, saying, “I expected he would at least come out, stand there and invoke the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over where my leprosy is and heal it.

Naaman irrité se retirait, disant: Je croyais qu’il sortirait vers moi, et que, se tenant debout, il invoquerait le nom du Seigneur son Dieu, qu’il toucherait de sa main l’endroit de la lèpre et me guérirait.

12 Aren't the rivers of Damascus, Abanah and Pharpar, better than any of these streams of Israel? Couldn't I have washed in them and been healed?” So he turned around and went off in a rage.

Est-ce qu’Abana et Pharphar, fleuves de Damas, ne sont pas meilleurs que toutes les eaux d’Israël, pour que je m’y lave et que je devienne net? Comme donc il s’était tourné, et qu’il s’en allait indigné,

13 But Naaman's officials went to him and said, “Sir, if the prophet had told you that you had to do something extraordinary, wouldn't you have done it? How much easier is it to do what he says, ‘Wash and you'll be healed’?”

Ses serviteurs s’approchèrent de lui, et lui dirent: Père, quand même le prophète vous aurait dit une chose importante, vous auriez dû certainement la faire; combien plus lorsqu’il vous a dit maintenant: Lave-toi, et tu deviendras net.

14 So Naaman went down and plunged himself underwater in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him. His body was healed, his skin became like a baby's, and he was clean.

Il descendit et se lava dans le Jourdain, sept fois, selon la parole de l’homme de Dieu, et sa chair fut rendue comme la chair d’un petit enfant, et il devint net.

15 Then Naaman and his whole entourage went back to the man of God, stood before him, and Naaman announced, “Now I'm convinced that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. Please accept a gift from me, your servant.”

Et, étant retourné vers l’homme de Dieu avec toute sa suite, il vint et s’arrêta devant lui, et dit: Je sais certainement qu’il n’y a point d’autre Dieu dans toute la terre, si ce n’est dans Israël. C’est pourquoi je te conjure de recevoir une bénédiction de ton serviteur.

16 But Elisha replied, “As the Lord lives, the one I serve, I will not accept anything.” Even though Naaman tried to persuade him to take the gift, he refused.

Mais Élisée lui répondit: Il vit, le Seigneur devant lequel je suis! je ne la recevrai pas. Et quoique Naaman fît instance, il n’y consentit nullement.

17 So Naaman said, “If you won't, please let me, your servant, take back with me two mule loads of earth, for I will never again bring a burnt offering or make a sacrifice to any other god but the Lord.

Et Naaman dit: Comme tu veux; mais, je te conjure, accorde à moi, ton serviteur, d’emporter la charge de deux mulets de terre; car, à l’avenir, ton serviteur n’offrira plus d’holocauste ou de victime à des dieux étrangers, mais seulement au Seigneur.

18 In addition, may the Lord forgive me for doing this: When my master goes into the temple of Rimmon to worship there, and I assist him, and I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive me for doing so.”

La seule chose pour laquelle je désire que tu pries le Seigneur pour ton serviteur, c’est que quand mon seigneur entrera dans le temple de Remmon pour adorer, en s’appuyant sur ma main, si j’adore dans le temple de Remmon, lui adorant dans le même lieu, le Seigneur me pardonne cette action, à moi, ton serviteur.

19 “Go in peace,” said Elisha, and Naaman left. But he had only gone a short way

Élisée lui répondit: Va en paix. Il s’en alla donc d’auprès de lui, dans le plus beau temps de la terre.

20 when Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, “Just look how my master has let this Naaman the Syrian off the hook by not accepting the gifts he brought! As the Lord lives, I'll run after him and get something from him.”

Alors Giézi, serviteur de l’homme de Dieu, dit: Mon maître a épargné ce Naaman de Syrie au point de ne pas accepter ce qu’il a apporté. Le Seigneur vit! je courrai après lui, et je recevrai de lui quelque chose.

21 So Gehazi chased after Naaman. When Naaman saw him running after him, he jumped down from the chariot to meet him and asked, “Is everything all right?”

Ainsi Giézi suivit à la trace Naaman; et lorsque Naaman le vit courant vers lui, il sauta de son char à sa rencontre, et demanda: Tout va-t-il bien?

22 “Everything's fine,” Gehazi replied. “My master sent me to tell you, ‘I've just found out that two young men have arrived to see me from the sons of the prophets who live the hill country of Ephraim. Please let them have a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’”

Et celui-ci répondit: Bien. Mon maître m’a envoyé vers vous, disant: Tout-à-l’heure sont venus vers moi, de la montagne d’Ephraïm, deux jeunes hommes d’entre les fils des prophètes: donne-leur un talent d’argent et deux vêtements de rechange.

23 But Naaman replied, “Please, take two talents.” He insisted that Gehazi to accept them. Then he tied up two talents of silver in two bags as well as two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, who carried them for Gehazi.

Et Naaman répondit: Il vaut mieux que tu prennes deux talents. Et il le força; il lia donc deux talents d’argent dans deux sacs et deux vêtements; il en chargea ses deux serviteurs, qui les portèrent même devant Giézi.

24 When Gehazi arrived at the hill fortress, he took the gifts from the servants and put them in the house. He told the men they could go, and they left.

Et comme le soir était déjà venu, il les prit de leurs mains et les serra dans sa maison; puis il renvoya ces hommes, et ils s’en allèrent.

25 When Gehazi got back and attended his master, Elisha asked him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?” “Your servant hasn't been anywhere,” he replied.

Mais lui-même, étant entré, se tint devant son maître; et Élisée demanda: D’où viens-tu, Giézi? Giézi répondit: Votre serviteur n’a été nulle part.

26 But Elisha told him, “Didn't I see you in my mind's eye when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take money and clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male and female servants?

Mais Élisée répliqua: Mon esprit n’était-il pas avec toi lorsque l’homme est revenu de son char à ta rencontre? Maintenant donc tu as reçu l’argent, tu as reçu aussi des vêtements pour acheter des plants d’oliviers, des vignes, des brebis, des bœufs, des serviteurs et des servantes.

27 Consequently Naaman's leprosy will stick to you and your descendants forever!” As Gehazi left him, he had leprosy—he looked as white as snow.

Mais la lèpre même de Naaman s’attachera à toi et à toute ta race pour toujours. Et il sortit d’auprès de son maître, lépreux et blanc comme neige.
