2 Chronicles 34
1 Josiah was eight when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for thirty-one years.
Josias avait huit ans quand il monta sur le trône, et il régna trente et un ans à Jérusalem.
2 He did what was right in the Lord's sight and followed the ways of his forefather David—he did not deviate to the right or to the left.
Il fit ce que est droit devant le Seigneur, et il marcha dans les voies de David, son aïeul; il ne s'en écarta ni à droite ni à gauche.
3 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, Josiah began to publicly worship the God of David his forefather, and in the twelfth year of his reign he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem by removing the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the metal images.
Et, dans la huitième année de son règne, il était encore un adolescent quand il commença à chercher le Seigneur Dieu de David; et, dans la douzième année, il se mit à purifier Juda et Jérusalem des hauts lieux, des bois sacrés, des ornements des autels et des idoles jetées en fonte.
4 He had the altars of Baal torn down in front of him, and the incense altars above them cut down. In addition, the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the metal images were smashed to pieces and scattered over the graves of those who had been sacrificing to them.
Et il renversa, de devant sa face, les autels de Baal et, au-dessus d'eux, les hauts lieux; il abattit les bois sacrés et les statues; il brisa les idoles jetées en fonte, il les réduisit en poudre, et les jeta sur la surface des tombeaux de ceux qui leur avaient sacrifié.
5 He burned the bones of the idolatrous priests on their altars. In this way he cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
Et il brûla les ossements de leurs prêtres sur les autels; et il purifia Jérusalem et Juda,
6 Josiah repeated this in the towns of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, all the way to Naphtali, and in their surrounding areas.
Puis, les villes de Manassé, d'Ephraïm, de Siméon et de Nephthali, et les bourgs qui les environnaient.
7 He tore down the altars and crushed the Asherah poles and the images to dust, and cut down all the incense altars across the whole land of Israel. Then he went back to Jerusalem.
Et il détruisit les autels et les bois sacrés, et il réduisit en poudre les idoles, et il renversa tous les hauts lieux d'Israël, et il revint à Jérusalem.
8 In the eighteenth year of his reign, once he had finished cleansing the land and the Temple, Josiah sent Shaphan, son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the city governor, and Joah, son of Joahaz, the record-keeper, to repair the Temple of the Lord his God.
Dans la dix-huitième année de son règne, après avoir purifié la terre et son palais, il envoya Saphan, fils d'Ezélias, Maasa, chef de la ville, et Juach, fils de Joachaz, son secrétaire-archiviste, pour réparer le temple du Seigneur son Dieu.
9 They went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought to God's Temple. The Levites at the entrances had collected this money from the people of Manasseh and Ephraim, from what was left of the people of Israel, as well as contributions from Judah, Benjamin, and the people of Jerusalem.
Il se rendirent auprès d'Helcias, le grand prêtre, et ils lui donnèrent l'argent offert au temple de Dieu, recueilli, par les lévites gardiens de la porte, des mains de Manassé, d'Ephraïm, des princes, de tout le reste d'Israël, des fils de Juda et de Benjamin, et des habitants de Jérusalem.
10 They handed it over to those who were supervising the repair work on Lord's Temple, who in turn paid the workmen doing the restoring and repairing.
Et ils donnèrent cet argent à ceux qui faisaient les travaux, qu'on avait établis dans le temple du Seigneur; ils le donnèrent à ceux qui faisaient ce qu'il y avait à faire pour restaurer et raffermir le temple.
11 They also paid carpenters and builders to buy cut stone, as well as timber for joists and beams for the buildings that the kings of Judah had let deteriorate.
Ils ordonnèrent aussi aux charpentiers et aux maçons d'acheter des pierres de taille et des solives pour recouvrir les logements que les rois de Juda avaient abattus.
12 The men did good, honest work. In charge of them were Jahath and Obadiah, Levites from the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, Levites from the sons of the Kohathites. The Levites, all skilled musicians,
Et ces hommes se mirent fidèlement à l'œuvre, et ils furent surveillés par Jeth et Abdias, lévites de la maison de Mérari, par Zacharie et Mosollam, des fils de Caath, et par tous les lévites qui savaient chanter et jouer des instruments,
13 were in charge of the workmen and directed everyone involved, depending on what was required. Some of the Levites were scribes, some officers, and some gatekeepers.
Et les manœuvres et les ouvriers, chacun en son travail, étaient encore surveillés par les lévites scribes, juges et portiers.
14 In the process of taking out the money donated to the Lord's Temple, Hilkiah the priest discovered the Book of the Lord's Law written down by Moses.
Or, tandis que l'on transportait l'argent donné pour le temple du Seigneur, Helcias, le prêtre, trouva un livre de la loi du Seigneur donnée par Moïse.
15 Hilkiah told Shaphan the scribe, “I've found the Book of the Law in the Lord's Temple.” He gave it to Shaphan.
Et Helcias prit la parole, et il dit à Saphan, le scribe: J'ai trouvé dans le temple du Seigneur un livre de la loi. Et Helcias donna le livre à Saphan.
16 Shaphan took the book to the king and told him, “We your servants are doing everything we were instructed to do.
Et Saphan porta le livre au roi, et il lui rendit compte, disant: Voici le compte de tout l'argent qui a été remis à tes serviteurs chargés des travaux.
17 The money collected at the Lord's Temple has been handed over to those who are supervising the workers, paying them to do the repairs.”
Or, cet argent, trouvé dans le temple du Seigneur, avait été monnayé et distribué aux surveillants, puis aux ouvriers.
18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, “Hilkiah the priest gave me this book.” Shaphan read it to the king.
Et Saphan en rendit compte au roi, et il ajouta: Helcias m'a donné un livre. Et Saphan le lut devant le roi.
19 When the king heard what the Law said, he tore his clothes.
Et quand Josias ouït les paroles du livre de la loi, il déchira ses vêtements.
20 Then he issue the following orders to Hilkiah, Ahikam, son of Shaphan, Abdon, son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah, the king's assistant:
Et il donna ses ordres à Helcias, à Achicam, fils de Saphan, à Abdom, fils de Michée, à Saphan, le scribe, à Asaïe, serviteur du roi, et il leur dit:
21 “Go and talk to the Lord for me, and also for those who still live in Israel and Judah, about what is said in the book that's been found. For the Lord must be really angry with us because our forefathers have not obeyed the Lord's instructions by following all that's written in this book.”
Allez et interrogez le Seigneur, pour moi et pour tout ce qui reste de Juda et d'Israël, au sujet des paroles du livre qui a été trouvé; car la colère du Seigneur s'est enflammée contre nous, parce que nos pères n'ont point obéi aux commandements du Seigneur, et n'ont point fait ce qui est écrit en ce livre.
22 Hilkiah and those the king had selected went and talked with Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum, son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, custodian of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the city's second quarter.
Or, Helcias et ceux à qui avait parlé le roi, allèrent trouver Olda, la prophétesse, femme de Sellem, file de Thécoé, fils d'Aras; elle observait les commandements, et demeurait à Jérusalem dans le second quartier, et ils lui parlèrent relativement à ces choses.
23 Huldah told them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the man who sent you to me,
Et elle leur répondit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël; dites à l'homme qui vous a envoyés chez moi:
24 this is what the Lord says: I am about to bring disaster down on this place and on its people, in accordance with all the curses written in the book that has been read to the king of Judah.
Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Voilà que j'amène le mal sur ce lieu,' selon les paroles du livre qui a été lu devant le roi de Juda,
25 They have abandoned me and offered sacrifices to other gods, making me angry by everything they've done. My anger will be poured out upon this place and will not be stopped.
En punition de ce qu'ils m'ont abandonné, de ce qu'ils ont brûlé de l'encens pour d'autres dieux, afin de m'irriter, par toutes les œuvres de leurs mains; car ma colère s'est enflammée contre ce lieu, et elle ne s'éteindra pas.
26 But tell the king of Judah who sent you to ask the Lord, tell him this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: As for the what you heard read to you—
Quant au roi de Juda qui vous a envoyés chez moi, pour interroger le Seigneur, dites-lui: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël: Aux paroles que tu as entendues,
27 because you were receptive and repentant before God when you heard his warnings against this place and against its people, and because you have repented, tearing your clothes and weeping before me, I have also heard you, declares the Lord.
Ton cœur a été rempli de crainte; tu t'es humilié devant moi, lorsque tu as ouï mes menaces contre ce lieu et contre ceux qui l'habitent; tu t'es humilié devant moi; tu as déchiré tes vêtements; tu as pleuré devant moi, et moi aussi j'ai entendu, dit le Seigneur.
28 All this will not happen until after you have died, and you will die in peace. You will not see all the disaster that I'm going to bring down on this place and on its inhabitants.” They went back to the king and gave him her response.
Voilà que je te réunis à tes pères; tu seras déposé en paix dans ton sépulcre, et tes yeux ne verront aucun des maux que j'amène sur ce lieu et sur ceux qui l'habitent. Et ils rapportèrent au roi ces paroles.
29 Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
Et le roi envoya des messagers, et il rassembla les anciens de Juda et de Jérusalem.
30 He went to the Lord's Temple with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, together with the priests and the Levites, all the people from the least to the greatest, and he read to them the whole Book of the Agreement that had been discovered in the Lord's Temple.
Et le roi monta au temple du Seigneur, avec tout Juda, tous les habitants de Jérusalem, les prêtres, les lévites et le peuple entier, depuis le petit jusqu'au grand, et il lut à leurs oreilles toutes les paroles du livre de l'alliance, trouvé dans le temple du Seigneur.
31 The king stood by the pillar and made a solemn agreement before the Lord to follow him and to keep his commandments, laws, and regulations with total dedication, and to observe the requirements of the agreement as written in the book.
Et le roi se tint debout sur le piédestal, et il fit une alliance devant le Seigneur, pour marcher devant le Seigneur, garder ses commandements, ses témoignages et ses ordonnances, de tout son cœur et de toute son âme, afin de se conformer à toutes les paroles de l'alliance écrites en ce livre.
32 Then he had everyone present from Jerusalem and Benjamin stand up to show they agreed to it. So all the people of Jerusalem accepted and followed the agreement with God, the God of their forefathers.
Et il fit lever tous ceux qui se trouvaient en Jérusalem; et Benjamin, et les habitants de Jérusalem firent une alliance dans le temple du Seigneur Dieu de leurs pères.
33 Josiah demolished all the vile idols from the whole territory belonging to the Israelites, and he made everyone in Israel serve the Lord their God. During his reign they did not give up worshiping the Lord, the God of their fathers.
Et Josias expulsa toutes les abominations de toute la terre des fils d'Israël, et il obligea tous ceux qui se trouvaient dans la ville et en Israël à servir, tous les jours de sa vie, le Seigneur leur Dieu; et il ne se détourna point du Seigneur Dieu de ses pères.
