1 Kings 3
1 Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh of Egypt. He married Pharaoh's daughter and brought her to live in the City of David until he finished building his palace, the Lord's Temple, and the walls surrounding Jerusalem.
Salomon s’allia par un mariage avec Pharaon, roi d’Égypte. Il prit pour femme la fille de Pharaon, et il l’amena dans la cité de David, jusqu’à ce qu’il eût achevé de bâtir sa maison et la maison de Yahweh, ainsi que le mur d’enceinte de Jérusalem.
2 In those days, however, the people still sacrificed on the high places because a Temple to honor the Lord hadn't yet been built.
Seulement le peuple sacrifiait sur les hauts lieux, car il n’avait pas été bâti de maison au nom de Yahweh jusqu’à ces jours.
3 Solomon showed he loved the Lord by following the instructions of his father David, except that he sacrificed and burned offerings on the high places.
Salomon aimait Yahweh, marchant selon les préceptes de David, son père; seulement il offrait des sacrifices sur les hauts lieux et y brûlait des parfums.
4 The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for it was the leading high place. Solomon presented one thousand burnt offerings on the altar there.
Le roi se rendit à Gabaon pour y sacrifier, car c’était le grand haut lieu. Salomon offrit mille holocaustes sur cet autel.
5 The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at Gibeon. God said to him, “Ask what you want me to give you.”
A Gabaon, Yahweh apparut en songe à Salomon pendant la nuit, et Dieu lui dit: « Demande ce que tu veux que je te donne. »
6 Solomon replied, “You showed your servant David, my father, great trustworthy love because he lived his life before you with faithfulness, doing what was right and committed to principle. You have continued to show this great trustworthy love by giving him a son to sit on his throne to this day.
Salomon répondit: « Vous avez montré une grande bienveillance envers votre serviteur David, mon père, selon qu’il marchait en votre présence dans la fidélité, dans la justice et dans la droiture de cœur envers vous; vous lui avez conservé cette grande bienveillance, et vous lui avez donné un fils qui est assis sur son trône, comme il paraît aujourd’hui.
7 Now, Lord God, you have made me king in place of my father David. But I am like an inexperienced young boy who doesn't know what to do.
Maintenant, Yahweh, mon Dieu, vous avez fait régner votre serviteur à la place de David, mon père; et moi je ne suis qu’un tout jeune homme, ne sachant pas comment me conduire.
8 I, your servant, am here in among your chosen people, a great people that are so many they cannot be counted.
Votre serviteur est au milieu de votre peuple que vous avez choisi, peuple immense, qui ne peut être évalué ni compté, tant il est nombreux.
9 So please give me a mind that's receptive so I can rule your people well, understanding the difference between right and wrong, for who can rule this difficult people of yours?”
Accordez donc à votre serviteur un cœur attentif pour juger votre peuple, pour discerner le bien et le mal. Car qui pourrait juger votre peuple, ce peuple si nombreux? »
10 The Lord considered that what Solomon asked for was good.
Le Seigneur eut pour agréable que Salomon lui eût fait cette demande,
11 So God told him, “Because you asked for this, and you didn't ask for a long life, or wealth, or the death of your enemies, but instead you asked for understanding to know what is right,
et Dieu lui dit: « Parce que tu as fait cette demande, et que tu n’as pas demandé pour toi de longs jours, et que tu n’as pas demandé pour toi des richesses, et que tu n’as pas demandé pour toi la mort de tes ennemis, mais que tu as demandé pour toi de l’intelligence pour exercer la justice,
12 I am giving you what you asked for. I am giving you a mind that is wise, with an understanding of what is right, more than anyone else before you or after you.
voici que je fais selon ta parole: voici que je te donne un cœur sage et intelligent, de telle sorte qu’il n’y ait eu personne avant toi qui te soit semblable, et qu’il ne s’élèvera personne après toi qui te soit semblable.
13 I am also giving you what you did not ask for, wealth and status—so much so that no king will compare to you for the whole of your life.
Et même ce que tu n’as pas demandé, je te le donne, richesses et gloire, au point que parmi les rois il n’y aura personne comme toi, pendant tous tes jours.
14 And if you follow my ways by keeping my laws and my commands, as your father David did, I will give you a long life.”
Et si tu marches dans mes voies, en observant mes lois et mes commandements, comme a marché David, ton père, je prolongerai tes jours. »
15 Then Solomon woke up and realized he'd had a dream. He went back to Jerusalem, and stood in front of the Ark of the Lord's Agreement and he presented burnt offerings and friendship offerings, and he held a feast for all his officials.
Salomon s’éveilla, et il comprit que c’était un songe. De retour à Jérusalem, il se tint devant l’arche de l’alliance de Yahweh; il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques, et il donna un festin à tous ses serviteurs.
16 Later two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him for judgment.
Alors deux femmes de mauvaise vie vinrent vers le roi et se tinrent devant lui.
17 One of the women spoke up, saying, “If it please Your Majesty: I share a house with this woman. I had a baby while she was living in the house.
L’une des femmes dit: « De grâce, mon seigneur! Cette femme et moi, nous demeurions dans la même maison, et j’ai mis au monde un enfant près d’elle dans la maison.
18 Three days after the birth of my baby, this woman also had a baby. We were together; there was no one else in the house, just the two of us.
Trois jours après que j’avais mis au monde mon enfant, cette femme a mis aussi au monde un enfant. Nous étions ensemble; aucun étranger n’était avec nous dans la maison, il n’y avait que nous deux dans la maison.
19 During the night this woman's son died because she rolled over on him.
Le fils de cette femme mourut pendant la nuit, parce qu’elle s’était couchée sur lui.
20 She got up in the middle of the night and took my son from beside me while I was sleeping. She lay him close beside her to cuddle him, and she lay her dead son close beside me.
Elle se leva au milieu de la nuit, elle prit mon fils à mes côtés tandis que la servante dormait, et elle le coucha dans son sein, et son fils qui était mort, elle le coucha dans mon sein.
21 When I got up in the morning to nurse my son I saw that he was dead. When I looked closely at him in the light I realized it wasn't my son.”
Lorsque je me suis levée le matin pour allaiter mon fils, voici qu’il était mort; mais, l’ayant considéré attentivement le matin, je m’aperçus que ce n’était pas mon fils que j’avais enfanté. »
22 The other woman argued, “No! My son is the one that's alive. Your son is the one that's dead.” The first woman objected, “No! Your son is the one that's dead. My son is the one that's alive.” They went on quarrelling in front of the king.
L’autre femme dit: « Non! C’est mon fils qui est vivant, et c’est ton fils qui est mort. » Mais la première répliqua: « Nullement, c’est ton fils qui est mort, et c’est mon fils qui est vivant. » Et elles se disputaient devant le roi.
23 The king intervened, saying, “So this woman says ‘My son is the one that's alive. Your son is the one that's dead,’ while the other woman says, ‘No! Your son is the one that's dead. My son is the one that's alive.’”
Le roi dit: « L’une dit: C’est mon fils qui est vivant, et c’est ton fils qui est mort; et l’autre dit: Nullement, c’est ton fils qui est mort, et c’est mon fils qui est vivant. »
24 “Bring me a sword,” the king ordered. So they brought him a sword.
Et le roi dit: « Apportez-moi une épée. » On apporta l’épée devant le roi.
25 “Cut the child that's alive in two, and give half to one woman and half to another,” he commanded.
Et le roi dit: « Partagez en deux l’enfant qui vit, et donnez-en la moitié à l’une et la moitié à l’autre. »
26 But the woman whose son was alive had so much love for him as a mother that she cried out to the king, “Please, Your Majesty, give her the boy! Don't kill him!” But the other woman said, “He won't be mine or yours—cut him in two!”
Alors la femme dont le fils était vivant dit au roi, car elle sentait ses entrailles s’émouvoir pour son fils: « Ah! mon seigneur, donnez-lui l’enfant qui vit, et qu’on ne le tue pas! » Et l’autre disait: « Qu’il ne soit ni à moi ni à toi; partagez-le. »
27 The king gave his verdict. “Give the child that's alive to the first woman,” he ordered. “On no account kill him, for she is his real mother.”
Et le roi répondit et dit: « Donnez à la première l’enfant qui vit, et qu’on ne le tue pas; c’est elle qui est sa mère. »
28 When everyone in Israel heard about the verdict the king had delivered, they had great respect for the king, because they recognized the wisdom God had given him to judge rightly.
Tout Israël apprit le jugement que le roi avait prononcé, et l’on craignit le roi, en voyant qu’il y avait en lui une sagesse divine pour rendre la justice.
