< 1 Chronicles 9 >
1 All of the people of Israel were recorded in the genealogies written down in the book of the kings of Israel. The people of Judah were taken away to captivity in Babylon because they had been unfaithful.
And all Israel was numbered: and the sum of them was written in the book of the kings of Israel, and Juda: and they were carried away to Babylon for their transgression.
2 The first to return and reclaim their property and live in their towns were some Israelites, priests, Levities, and Temple servants.
Now the first that dwelt in their possessions, and in their cities, were the Israelites, and the priests, and the Levites, and the Nathineans.
3 Some from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh returned to live in Jerusalem. They included:
And in Jerusalem dwelt of the children of Juda, and of the children of Benjamin, and of the children of Ephraim, and of Manasses.
4 Uthai son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, a descendant of Perez, son of Judah.
Othei the son of Ammiud, the son of Amri, the son of Omrai, the son of Bonni, of the sons of Phares the son of Juda.
5 From the Shilonites: Asaiah (firstborn) and his sons.
And of Siloni: Asaia the firstborn, and his sons.
6 From the Zerahites: Jeuel and relatives totaled 690.
And of the sons of Zara: Jehuel, and their brethren, six hundred and ninety.
7 From the Benjamites: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah;
And of the sons of Benjamin: Sale the son of Mosollam, the son of Oduia, the son of Asana:
8 Ibneiah son of Jeroham; Elah son of Uzzi, son of Micri; and Meshullam son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah.
And Jobania the son of Jeroham: and Ela the son of Ozi, the son of Mochori: and Mosallam the son of Saphatias, the son of Rahuel, the son of Jebania:
9 All of them were family heads as recorded in their genealogies, and they totaled 956.
And their brethren by their families, nine hundred and fifty-six. All these were heads of their families, by the houses of their fathers.
10 From the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jakin,
And of the priests: Jedaia, Joiarib, and Jachin:
11 Azariah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub. (Azariah was the head official in charge of the house of God.)
And Azarias the son of Helcias, the son of Mosollam, the son of Sadoc, the son of Maraioth, the son of Achitob, high priest of the house of God.
12 Also Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malkijah, and Maasai son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer.
And Adaias the son of Jeroham, the son of Phassur, the son of Melchias, and Maasai the son of Adiel, the son of Jezra, the son of Mosollam, the son of Mosollamith, the son of Emmer.
13 The priests, who were family heads, totaled 1,760. They were strong and capable men who served in the house of God.
And their brethren heads in their families a thousand seven hundred and threescore, very strong and able men for the work of the ministry in the house of God.
14 From the Levites: Shemaiah, son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, a descendant of Merari;
And of the Levites: Semeia the son of Hassub the son of Ezricam, the son of Hasebia of the sons of Merari.
15 Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, and Mattaniah, son of Mica, son of Zicri, son of Asaph;
And Bacbacar the carpenter, and Galal, and Mathania the son of Micha, the son of Zechri the son of Asaph:
16 Obadiah son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun; and Berekiah son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who used to live in the villages of the Netophathites.
And Obdia the son of Semeia, the son of Galal, the son of Idithum: and Barachia the son of Asa, the son of Elcana, who dwelt in the suburbs of Netophati.
17 The gatekeepers of the Temple: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman and their relatives. Shallum was the chief gatekeeper.
And the porters were Sellum, and Accub, and Telmon, and Ahiman: and their brother Sellum was the prince,
18 They had the responsibility up until now of looking after the King's Gate on the east side. They were the gatekeepers of the camps of the Levites.
Until that time, in the king’s gate eastward, the sons of Levi waited by their turns.
19 Shallum was the son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah. He and his relatives, the Korahites, were responsible for guarding the entrances to the sanctuary in the same way their fathers had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the tented house of the Lord.
But Sellum the son of Core, the son of Abiasaph, the son of Core, with his brethren and his father’s house, the Corites were over the works of the service, keepers of the gates of the tabernacle: and their families in turns were keepers of the entrance of the camp of the Lord.
20 Previously Phinehas son of Eleazar had been the leader of the gatekeepers. The Lord was with him.
And Phinees the son of Eleazar, was their prince before the Lord,
21 Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
And Zacharias the son of Mosollamia, was porter of the gate of the tabernacle of the testimony:
22 In total there were 212 chosen to be gatekeepers at the entrances. They recorded their genealogies in their home towns. David and Samuel the prophet had selected their forefathers for their faithfulness.
All these that were chosen to be porters at the gates, were two hundred and twelve: and they mere registered in their proper towns: whom David and Samuel the seer appointed in their trust.
23 They and their descendants were responsible for guarding the entrance to the house of the Lord, also when it was a tent.
As well them as their sons, to keep the gates of the house of the Lord, and the tabernacle by their turns.
24 The gatekeepers were placed on four sides: east, west, north, and south.
In four quarters were the porters: that is to say, toward the east, and west, and north, and south.
25 Their relatives in their towns came every seven days at certain times to help them.
And their brethren dwelt in villages, and came upon their sabbath days from time to time.
26 The four chief gatekeepers, who were Levites, were given the responsibility of looking after the rooms and treasuries in the house of God.
To these four Levites were committed the whole number of the porters, and they were over the chambers, and treasures, of the house of the Lord.
27 They spent the night around the house of God because they had to guard it and they had the key to unlock it in the morning.
And they abode in their watches round about the temple of the Lord: that when it was time, they might open the gates in the morning.
28 Some of the gatekeepers were responsible for the articles that were used in worship services. They counted what was brought in and what was taken out.
And some of their stock had the charge of the vessels for the ministry: for the vessels were both brought in and carried out by number.
29 Others were given the job of looking after the furniture and equipment used in the sanctuary, as well as the special flour, wine, olive oil, incense, and spices.
Some of them also had the instruments of the sanctuary committed unto them, and the charge of the fine flour, and wine, and oil, and frankincense, and spices.
30 (However, some of the priests were in charge of mixing the spices.)
And the sons of the priests made the ointments of the spices.
31 Mattithiah, a Levite, who was the firstborn son of Shallum the Korahite, was given the responsibility of baking the bread used in offerings.
And Mathathias a Levite, the firstborn of Sellum the Corite, was overseer of such things as were fried in the fryingpan.
32 Other Kohathites were in charge of preparing the bread set out on the table every Sabbath.
And some of the sons of Caath their brethren, were over the leaves of proposition, to prepare always new for every sabbath.
33 The musicians, heads of Levite families, lived in the rooms in the Temple and were not required to carry out other duties because they were on duty day and night.
These are the chief of the singing men of the families of the Levites, who dwelt in the chambers, by the temple, that they might serve continually day and night in their ministry.
34 These were all heads of Levite families, leaders as recorded in their genealogies, and they lived in Jerusalem.
The heads of the Levites, princes in their families, abode in Jerusalem.
35 Jeiel was the father of Gibeon and he lived in Gibeon. His wife's name was Maacah.
And in Gabaon dwelt Jehiel the father of Gabaon, and the name of hill wife was Maacha:
36 His firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab,
His firstborn son Abdon, and Sur, and Cis, and Baal, and Ner, and Nadab,
37 Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth.
Gedor also, and Ahio, and Zacharias, and Macelloth.
38 Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They also lived near their relatives in Jerusalem.
And Macelloth beget Samaan: these dwelt over against their brethren in Jerusalem, with their brethren.
39 Ner was the father of Kish, Kish was the father of Saul, and Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malki-Shua, Abinadab, and Esh-Baal.
Now Ner beget Cia: and Cis begot Saul: and Saul beget Jonathan and Melchisua, and Abinadab, and Esbaal.
40 The son of Jonathan: Merib-Baal, who was the father of Micah.
And the son of Jonathan, was Meribbaal: and Meribbaal beget Micha.
41 The sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and Ahaz.
And the sons of Micha, were Phithon, and Melech, and Tharaa, and Ahaz.
42 Ahaz was the father of Jadah, Jadah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri, and Zimri was the father of Moza.
And Ahaz beget Jara, and Jara beget Alamath, and Azmoth, and Zamri. And Zamri beget Mesa.
43 Moza was the father of Binea; Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son, and Azel his son.
And Mesa beget Banaa: whose son Raphaia beget Elasa: of whom was born Asel.
44 Azel had six sons. Their names were: Azrikam, Bokeru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.
And heel had six sons whose names are, Ezricam, Bochru, Ismahel, Saria, Obdia, Hanan: these are the sons of Asel.
