< Matthew 6 >

1 “Be careful not to do your charitable giving before the people so as to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father who is in the heavens.
"Be careful that you do not do your righteousness before people, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 Therefore, whenever you do charitable giving do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by the people. Assuredly I say to you, they already have their reward.
Therefore when you practice charitable giving, do not sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from people. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
3 But when you do charitable giving do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
But when you practice charitable giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand does,
4 so that your charitable giving may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself repay you openly.
so that your charitable giving may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
5 And whenever you pray do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners, so that they may be seen by the people. Assuredly I say to you that they already have their reward.
"And when you pray, you are not to be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I tell you, they have received their reward.
6 But you, whenever you pray, go into your room, and having shut the door pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will repay you openly.
But you, when you pray, enter into your inner chamber, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
7 “But when you pray do not babble like the heathen; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
And in praying, do not use vain repetitions, as the unbelievers do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.
8 So do not be like them, because your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
Therefore do not be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him.
9 Therefore, you pray like this: ‘Our Father who is in the heavens, let Your name be reverenced;
Therefore, you should pray this way: 'Our Father in heaven, holy be your name.
10 let Your kingdom come, let Your will be done, on the earth just as in heaven.
Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread;
Give us today our daily bread.
12 and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
13 And do not bring us into testing, but rescue us from the evil one; because Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.'
14 For if you forgive people their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
"For if you forgive people their wrongdoing, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 But if you do not forgive people their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
But if you do not forgive people, neither will your Father forgive your wrongdoing.
16 “Also, whenever you fast do not become gloomy like the hypocrites, because they disfigure their faces so that people will notice that they are fasting. Assuredly I say to you that they already have their reward.
"Moreover when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by people to be fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
17 But when you fast anoint your head and wash your face,
But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face;
18 so that you do not appear to the people to be fasting, but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
so that you are not seen by people to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and rust ruin and where thieves break in and steal;
"Do not store up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and decay destroy, and where thieves break through and steal;
20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust ruins and where thieves neither break in nor steal;
but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroy, and where thieves do not break through and steal;
21 because where your treasure is there your heart will be also.
for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. So if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.
"The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.
23 But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness.
24 “No one is able to serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Mammon.
25 Therefore, I say to you not to worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
26 Look at the birds of the air, that they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not superior to them?
See the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of much more value than they?
27 And which of you can add one cubit to his stature by worrying?
"And which of you, by being anxious, can add one cubit to his height?
28 And why do you worry about clothes? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither labor nor spin,
And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They do not toil, neither do they spin,
29 and yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was arrayed like one of these.
yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.
30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which exists today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, you little-faiths?
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won't he much more clothe you, you of little faith?
31 Therefore do not worry saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
"Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?', 'What will we drink?' or, 'With what will we be clothed?'
32 For the pagans seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need each of these things.
For the unbelievers seek after all these things, for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
33 Rather, seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
But seek first the Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own affairs. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
