< Matthew 25 >

1 “Then the kingdom of the heavens will be like ten virgins who, taking their lamps, went out to meet the bridegroom.
The kingdom of heaven is like ten girls, who took their lamps with them to go and meet the bridegroom.
2 Now five of them were prudent and five foolish.
Five were foolish, and five were wise.
3 Those who were foolish, taking their lamps, did not take [extra] oil with them,
The foolish girls took their lamps but didn't take any oil with them,
4 but the prudent ones took oil in their vessels along with their lamps.
while the wise took jars of oil with them as well as their lamps.
5 Now while the bridegroom delayed they all dozed and slept,
The bridegroom took a long time and all the girls became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 but at midnight there was a shout: ‘Attention! The bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him.’
At midnight the shout came, ‘Look, the bridegroom's here! Come out and meet him!’
7 Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps.
All the girls got up and trimmed the wicks of their lamps. The foolish girls said to the wise ones,
8 And the foolish ones said to the prudent, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’
‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ But the wise girls replied,
9 But the prudent ones answered saying, ‘No, in case there not be enough for you and us; instead, go to those who sell and buy for yourselves.’
‘No, because otherwise there won't be enough for both you and for us. Go to the shopkeepers and buy some oil for yourselves.’
10 But while they went to buy, the bridegroom arrived, and the ones who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast—and the door was shut!
While they went to buy oil, the bridegroom arrived, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding, and the door was locked shut.
11 Later the other virgins arrived too saying, ‘Lord, lord, open for us!’
The other girls came later. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they called, ‘Open the door for us!’
12 But in answer he said, ‘Assuredly I say to you, I do not know you.’
But he answered, ‘I tell you the truth: I don't know you.’
13 Therefore, keep alert, because you do not know the day nor the hour in which the Son of the Man is coming.
So stay alert, for you don't know the day, or the hour.
14 “Because the kingdom is also like a man about to go on a long journey, who called his own servants and entrusted his possessions to them.
It's like a man who went away on a trip. He called in his servants and entrusted them with what he owned.
15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on the journey.
To one of them he gave five talents, to another he gave two, and to another one, according to their different abilities. Then he left.
16 So the one who received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.
Immediately the one with five talents went and invested them in a business, and made another five talents.
17 So also the one who received the two gained another two as well.
In the same way the one with two talents made another two.
18 But he who received the one went off and dug in the ground and hid his lord's silver.
But the man who'd received the one talent went off and dug a hole and hid his master's money.
19 “Then, after a long time, the lord of those servants comes and settles accounts with them.
A long time later the master of those servants returned, and settled accounts with them.
20 “So the one who had received the five talents approached and brought five more talents saying, ‘Lord, you entrusted five talents to me; see, I gained five more talents besides them!’
The one with five talents came and presented the other five talents. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘You gave me five talents. Look, I've made a profit of five talents.’
21 His lord said to him: ‘Super, you good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things, I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
His master said to him, ‘You've done well—you are a good, faithful servant. You have proved yourself trustworthy over small things, so now I'm placing you in charge over many things. Be happy because I'm really pleased with you!’
22 So the one who had received the two talents also approached and said, ‘Lord, you entrusted two talents to me; see, I gained two more talents besides them!’
The one with two talents also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘You gave me two talents. Look, I've made a profit of two talents.’
23 His lord said to him: ‘Super, you good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things, I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
His master said to him, ‘You've done well—you are a good, faithful servant. You have proved trustworthy over small things, so now I'm placing you in charge over many things. Be happy because I'm really pleased with you!’
24 “Then he who had received the one talent also approached and said: ‘Lord, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter.
Then the man with one talent came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I know that you're a hard man. You reap where you didn't sow, and you harvest crops that you didn't plant.
25 And being afraid I went off and hid your talent in the ground; here, take what is yours.’
So since I was afraid of you I went and buried your talent in the ground. Look, you can have back what belongs to you.’
26 So in answer his lord said to him: ‘You wicked and lazy servant! You knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I did not scatter.
But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! If you think I reap where I don't sow, and harvest crops I didn't plant,
27 Therefore you were obligated to deposit my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received what is mine with interest.
then you should have deposited my silver in the bank so that when I returned I could have had my money with interest.
28 Therefore, take the talent away from him and give it to the one having the ten talents.
Take the talent away from him, and give it to the one with ten talents.
29 For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but the one who does not have, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away from him.
For everyone who has will be given even more; and everyone who doesn't have anything, even what they have will be taken away from them.
30 And throw out the useless servant, into the darkness farthest out!’ There, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Now throw this useless servant out into the darkness where there'll be crying and gnashing of teeth.’
31 “When the Son of the Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on His throne of glory.
But when the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his majestic throne.
32 And all the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
Everyone will be brought before him. He will separate them from one another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
33 And the sheep He will place on His right, but the goats on His left.
He'll place the sheep on his right hand, and the goats on his left.
34 Then the King will say to those on His right: ‘Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom that was prepared for you at the foundation of the world.
Then the king will say to the ones on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, and inherit the kingdom that's been prepared for you from the beginning of the world.
35 For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you took me in;
For I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you invited me in.
36 I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to me.’
I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you looked after me. I was in prison and you visited me.’
37 Then the righteous will answer Him saying: ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?
Then those who are right will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and fed you, or thirsty and gave you a drink?
38 When did we see you a stranger and take you in, or naked and clothe you?
When did we see you as a stranger and invite you in, or naked and clothe you?
39 Or when did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?’
When did we see you sick, or in prison, and visit you?’
40 And in answer the King will say to them, ‘Assuredly I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
The king will tell them, ‘I tell you the truth: whatever you did for one of these of least importance you did for me.’
41 “Then He will also say to those on His left: ‘Go away from me, you accursed ones, into the eternal fire that was prepared for the devil and his angels. (aiōnios g166)
He'll also say to those on his left, ‘Go away from me, you who are doomed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels! (aiōnios g166)
42 For I was hungry and you did not give me food; I was thirsty and you did not give me drink;
For I was hungry and you didn't give me anything to eat. I was thirsty and you didn't give me a drink.
43 I was a stranger and you did not take me in; I was naked and you did not clothe me; I was sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’
I was a stranger and you didn't invite me in. I was naked and you didn't clothe me. I was sick and in prison and you didn't visit me.’
44 Then they also will answer saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not minister to you?’
Then they will also answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn't look after you?’
45 Then He will answer them saying, ‘Assuredly I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, neither did you do it to me.’
Then he will tell them, ‘I tell you the truth: whatever you didn't do for one of these of least importance you didn't do for me.’
46 And they will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (aiōnios g166)
They will go away into eternal condemnation, but those who are good will enter eternal life.” (aiōnios g166)
