< Matthew 19 >
1 Now it happened, when Jesus had finished these words, that He departed from Galilee and went to the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan.
And it came to pass when Jesus had ended these words, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judea, beyond Jordan.
2 And large crowds followed Him and there He healed them.
And great multitudes followed him: and he healed them there.
3 The Pharisees also came to Him to test Him, saying to Him, “Is it permissible for a man to divorce his wife for just any cause?”
And there came to him the Pharisees tempting him, and saying: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
4 So in answer He said to them: “Have you never read that the Creator at the beginning made them a male and a female?
Who answering, said to them: Have ye not read, that he who made man from the beginning, Made them male and female? And he said:
5 And He said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall be turned into one flesh.’
For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they two shall be in one flesh.
6 So then, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God joined together let not man separate!”
Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.
7 They say to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce and to dismiss her?”
They say to him: Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce, and to put away?
8 He says to them: “Because of your hard-heartedness Moses permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been so.
He saith to them: Because Moses by reason of the hardness of your heart permitted you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
9 And I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for fornication, and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries a divorcee commits adultery.”
And I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, committeth adultery.
10 His disciples say to Him, “If that's the situation of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry!”
His disciples say unto him: If the case of a man with his wife be so, it is not expedient to marry.
11 So He said to them: “Not all can assimilate this word, but those to whom it has been given.
Who said to them: All men take not this word, but they to whom it is given.
12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, from their mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who were castrated by men; and there are eunuchs who castrated themselves for the sake of the kingdom of the heavens. He who is able to assimilate it, let him assimilate.”
For there are eunuchs, who were born so from their mother’s womb: and there are eunuchs, who were made so by men: and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He that can take, let him take it.
13 Then little children were brought to Him, that He might lay hands on them and pray; but the disciples rebuked them.
Then were little children presented to him, that he should impose hands upon them and pray. And the disciples rebuked them.
14 So Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not forbid them, for of such is the kingdom of the heavens.”
But Jesus said to them: Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come to me: for the kingdom of heaven is for such.
15 And after laying hands on them He moved on from there.
And when he had imposed hands upon them, he departed from thence.
16 And then, a certain one came and said to Him, “Good teacher, what good thing must I do so that I may have eternal life?” (aiōnios )
And behold one came and said to him: Good master, what good shall I do that I may have life everlasting? (aiōnios )
17 But He said to him: “Why do you call me good? No one is good except One, God. But if you want to enter into the life, keep the commandments.”
Who said to him: Why asketh thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
18 He says to Him, “Which ones?” So Jesus said: “‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not give false witness,’
He said to him: Which? And Jesus said: Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness.
19 ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
20 The young man says to Him: “I have kept all these things since my youth. What do I still lack?”
The young man saith to him: All these I have kept from my youth, what is yet wanting to me?
21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come follow me.”
Jesus saith to him: If thou wilt be perfect, go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come follow me.
22 So upon hearing that word the young man went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad: for he had great possessions.
23 Then Jesus said to His disciples: “Assuredly I say to you that only with difficulty will a rich person enter into the kingdom of the heavens.
Then Jesus said to his disciples: Amen, I say to you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God.”
And again I say to you: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
25 Upon hearing it His disciples were really flabbergasted saying, “Who then can be saved?”
And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered very much, saying: Who then can be saved?
26 So looking at them Jesus said, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
And Jesus beholding, said to them: With men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible.
27 Then Peter answered and said to Him: “See, we have left all and followed you. So what will we have?”
Then Peter answering, said to him: Behold we have left all things, and have followed thee: what therefore shall we have?
28 So Jesus said to them: “Assuredly I say to you that in the Regeneration, when the Son of the Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And Jesus said to them: Amen, I say to you, that you, who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, you also shall sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And, everyone who left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my name's sake will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit life eternal. (aiōnios )
And every one that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall possess life everlasting. (aiōnios )
30 But many ‘first’ will be last, and ‘last’ first.
And many that are first, shall be last: and the last shall be first.
