< Matthew 14 >
1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus,
2 and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptizer; he has been raised from the dead, and therefore the powers are at work in him.”
and said to his servants, “This is John the Immerser, he rose from the dead, and because of this the mighty energies are working in him.”
3 For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
For Herod having laid hold on John, bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
4 For John would say to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
for John was saying to him, “It is not lawful to you to have her,”
5 And although he wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they counted him as a prophet.
and willing to kill him, he feared the multitude, because as a prophet they were holding him.
6 But while Herod's birthday was being celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and she pleased Herod.
But the birthday of Herod being kept, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod,
7 So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
after which with an oath he professed to give her whatever she might ask.
8 So she, having been prompted by her mother, she says, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer!”
And she, having been instigated by her mother, says, “Give me here on a plate the head of John the Immerser”;
9 And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and those who were reclining at the table with him, he commanded it to be given.
and the king was grieved, but because of the oaths and of those dining with him, he commanded [it] to be given;
10 So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.
and having sent, he beheaded John in the prison,
11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
and his head was brought on a plate, and was given to the girl, and she brought [it] near to her mother.
12 Then his disciples came forward and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.
And his disciples having come, took up the body, and buried it, and having come, they told Jesus,
13 Upon hearing it, Jesus departed from there by boat to a deserted place privately. But when the crowds heard it, they followed Him on foot from the towns.
and Jesus having heard, withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by Himself, and the multitudes having heard followed Him on land from the cities.
14 So when Jesus disembarked He saw a large crowd, and He had compassion on them and healed their sick.
And Jesus having come forth, saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion on them, and healed their sick;
15 Now with evening coming on His disciples approached Him saying: “The place is uninhabited and the hour is already late. Dismiss the crowds, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”
and evening having come, His disciples came to Him, saying, “The place is desolate, and the hour has now past, let away the multitudes that, having gone into the villages, they may buy food for themselves.”
16 But Jesus said to them: “They do not need to go away. You give them to eat.”
And Jesus said to them, “They have no need to go away—you give them to eat.”
17 But they say to Him, “We have nothing here except five loaves and two fish.”
And they say to Him, “We have nothing here except five loaves and two fishes.”
18 So He said, “Bring them here to me.”
And He said, “Bring them to Me here.”
19 Then He commanded the crowds to recline on the grass. And taking the five loaves and two fish and looking up to heaven, He blessed; and breaking the loaves He gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds.
And having commanded the multitudes to recline on the grass, and having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the sky, He blessed, and having broken, He gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples [gave] to the multitudes,
20 So they all ate and were filled; and they took up the fragments that remained, twelve baskets full.
and they all ate, and were filled, and they took up what was over of the broken pieces twelve hand-baskets full;
21 Now those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
and those eating were about five thousand men, apart from women and children.
22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds.
And immediately Jesus constrained His disciples to go into the boat, and to go before Him to the other side, until He might let away the multitudes;
23 And having dismissed the crowds He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. So when night came He was alone there.
and having let away the multitudes, He went up to the mountain by Himself to pray, and evening having come, He was there alone,
24 But the boat was already in the middle of the sea, being harassed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
and the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25 So in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went away to them, walking on the sea,
26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they became agitated saying, “It's a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.
and the disciples having seen Him walking on the sea, were troubled, saying, “It is an apparition,” and from the fear they cried out;
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them saying: “Courage! It is I; don't be afraid!”
and immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage! I AM; do not be afraid.”
28 So in answer Peter said, “Lord, since it's you, command me to come to you on the water.”
And Peter answering Him said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the waters”;
29 So He said to him, “Come!” And stepping down from the boat Peter walked on the water to go to Jesus.
and He said, “Come”; and having gone down from the boat, Peter walked on the waters to come to Jesus,
30 But seeing the strong wind he became afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out saying, “Lord, save me!”
but seeing the vehement wind, he was afraid, and having begun to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31 And immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him and says to him: “You little-faith! Why did you doubt?”
And immediately Jesus, having stretched forth the hand, laid hold of him and says to him, “Little faith! For why did you waver?”
32 And when they got into the boat the wind ceased.
And they having gone into the boat, the wind stilled,
33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him saying, “Truly you are the Son of God!”
and those in the boat having come, worshiped Him, saying, “You are truly God’s Son.”
34 When they had crossed over they came to the land of Genesaret.
And having passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret,
35 And when the men of that place recognized Him they sent messengers into all that surrounding region and they brought to Him all who were sick.
and having recognized Him, the men of that place sent forth to all that surrounding region, and they brought to Him all who were ill,
36 And they would beg Him that if only they might at least touch the hem of His garment; and as many as touched were completely healed.
and were calling on Him that they might only touch the fringe of His garment, and as many as touched were saved.
