< Jude 1 >
1 Jude, slave of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to the called, those who have been sanctified by God the Father and preserved through Jesus Christ:
JUDE a servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to those who are sanctified in God the Father, and preserved by Jesus Christ, the called:
2 May mercy and peace and love be multiplied to you.
mercy unto you, and peace and love be multiplied.
3 Dear ones, while I was really intent on writing to you about the salvation we share, I had a compulsion to write exhorting you to contend earnestly for the Faith once for all committed to the saints.
Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you concerning the common salvation, I held it necessary to write unto you, exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered unto the saints.
4 Because certain men, who were marked out for this condemnation long ago, have sneaked in; they are godless, perverting the grace of our God into licentiousness and denying the only Sovereign God, even our Lord Jesus Christ.
For certain men have craftily introduced themselves, who were from of old proscribed for this condemnation, ungodly men, changing the grace of God into impurity, and denying our only sovereign God and Lord, Jesus Christ.
5 So I want to remind you, though you already know this, that the Lord delivered a people out of the land of Egypt yet later destroyed those who did not believe.
But I would remind you, though ye once knew this, that the Lord, though he delivered the people out of the land of Egypt, afterwards destroyed those who believed not.
6 And the angels who did not keep their proper domain but deserted their own dwelling He has kept bound in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day. (aïdios )
And the angels who preserved not their own primitive state, but deserted their proper abode, hath he reserved in everlasting chains under darkness, unto the judgment of the great day. (aïdios )
7 So also Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns—who gave themselves up to fornication and went after a different kind of flesh in a manner similar to those angels—stand as an example, undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. (aiōnios )
As Sodom and Gomorrha and the surrounding cities, in like manner with them abandoned to whoredom, and going after other flesh, are set forth an example, suffering the judicial punishment of eternal fire. (aiōnios )
8 Likewise these dreamers in their turn both defile flesh and reject authority and slander celestial beings.
In like manner also do these men, even when they dream, defile indeed the flesh, despise sovereignty, and revile dignities.
9 Yet even Michael the archangel, when taking issue with the devil—he was arguing about Moses' corpse—did not dare to pronounce a reviling judgment, but said, “May the Lord rebuke you!”
Though Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil, he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not to produce a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
10 But these speak abusively against whatever they do not understand, while whatever they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals—by these things they are ruined.
But these men speak evil even of the things of which they have no knowledge: but such things as they know naturally, as the brute beasts, in these they corrupt themselves.
11 Woe to them, because they have taken the way of Cain, have rushed into Balaam's error for profit, and have destroyed themselves in Korah's rebellion!
Wo unto them! for they have walked in the way of Cain, and have eagerly run in Balaam’s erroneous path of hire, and have perished in opposition, like Corah.
12 These men are hidden reefs at your love feasts, joining the feast without fear, caring only for themselves; they are clouds without rain, carried along by winds; they are late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead (having been uprooted);
These are in your feasts of love, as sunken rocks; though joining in your banquet, they feed themselves fearlessly; clouds without water carried about by the winds; trees untimely withering, fruitless, twice dead, rooted up;
13 they are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shameful acts; they are wandering stars, for whom the black of the darkness has been reserved forever. (aiōn )
raging billows of the sea foaming out their own infamies; stars wandering from their courses, for whom the blackness of darkness for ever is reserved. (aiōn )
14 Now even Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men saying: “Look, the Lord is coming with ten thousands of His holy ones
Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied also of these men, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with myriads of his saints,
15 to execute judgment on everyone and to convict all the godless among them of all their godless deeds that they have godlessly perpetrated, also of all the harsh things they have spoken against Him—the godless sinners!”
to execute judgment against all men, and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness which they have impiously committed, and of all the bitter words which impious offenders have spoken against him.
16 These men are grumblers and complainers, living according to their own evil desires; they talk big, flattering people to gain advantage.
These men are murmurers, complainers at their lot in life, walking after their own corrupt passions; and their mouth utters hyperbolically pompous expressions, pretending high personal admiration, in order to make their advantage.
17 But you, dear ones, remember the words that were spoken before by the Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ:
But ye, beloved, remember the words which have been spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ,
18 how they told you that in the last time there will be scoffers who live according to their own godless desires.
how they told you that in the last time there will be scoffers, walking after their own ungodly passions.
19 These are the ones who cause division; they are ‘soulish’, not having a spirit.
These are the men who separate themselves, sensual, destitute of the Spirit.
20 But you, dear ones, building yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,
But ye, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying by the Holy Ghost,
21 keep yourselves in God's love, looking forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ into eternal life. (aiōnios )
preserve yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. (aiōnios )
22 Now be merciful to some, making a distinction;
And of some have compassion, distinguishing their case;
23 but others save with fear, snatching them out of the fire, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.
and others save with trembling, snatching them out of the fire; though hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
24 Now to Him who is able to keep them from stumbling and to present them before His glorious presence without fault and with exultation—
Now to him who is able to guard you from stumbling, and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with exultation,
25 to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, power and authority, both now and throughout all the ages! Amen. (aiōn )
to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, might and dominion, both now and unto all eternity. Amen. (aiōn )
