< Galatians 2 >
1 Fourteen years later I went up to Jerusalem again, with Barnabas, taking Titus along as well.
Then after a period of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with me.
2 I went on the basis of a revelation and set before them [the main apostles] the Gospel that I proclaim among the nations/Gentiles.—Now I did this privately to those with influence, lest somehow I might run, or had run, in vain.
I went up by revelation, and I explained to them the gospel which I preach among those who are not Jewish, but privately before those who were respected, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain.
3 However, not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, for being a Greek.
But not even Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
4 This came up because of the false brothers who were smuggled in (who stole in to spy out our freedom, that we have in Christ Jesus, so as to reduce us to slavery),
This was because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who stole in to spy out our liberty which we have in Messiah Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage;
5 to whom we did not yield, even for a moment, so that the truth of the Gospel might continue with you.—
to whom we gave no place in the way of subjection, not for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
6 Now from those who seemed to be important (whatever they were makes no difference to me; God shows favoritism to no man)—those with influence contributed nothing to me,
But from those who were reputed to be important (whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God shows no favoritism between people)—they, I say, who were respected imparted nothing to me,
7 but on the contrary, upon seeing that I had been entrusted with the Gospel for the uncircumcised, just as was Peter for the circumcised
but to the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcision, even as Peter with the gospel for the circumcision
8 (for He who was at work with Peter for the apostleship to the circumcised was also at work with me for that to the uncircumcised),
(for he who appointed Peter to be an apostle of the circumcision appointed me also to the non-Jews);
9 and upon perceiving the grace that had been given to me, James and Cephas and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles, while they to the Jews.
and when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the non-Jews, and they to the circumcised.
10 They did ask us to keep remembering the poor, the very thing I also was eager to do.
They only asked us to remember the poor—which very thing I was also zealous to do.
11 But, when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was blameworthy.
But when Cephas came to Antioch, I resisted him to his face, because he stood condemned.
12 Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came he began to draw back and separate himself, fearing those of the circumcision party.
For before some people came from James, he ate with those who were not Jewish. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.
13 And the rest of the Jews played the hypocrite with him as well, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
And the rest of the Jewish believers joined him in his hypocrisy; so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
14 So when I saw that they were not walking straight according to the truth of the Gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all: “If you, being a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, why do you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?
But when I saw that they did not walk uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, "If you, being a Jew, live as the non-Jews do, and not as the Jews do, how can you compel the non-Jews to live as the Jews do?
15 We natural Jews (and not ‘Gentile sinners’),
"We, being Jews by birth, and not non-Jewish sinners,
16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, we ourselves have believed into Christ Jesus, so as to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law; because no one will be justified by works of law.
yet knowing that no one is justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus (the) Messiah, even we believed in Messiah Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Messiah, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.
17 But if while seeking to be justified in Christ we ourselves were discovered to be sinners, then is Christ a minister of sin? Of course not!
But if, while we sought to be justified in Messiah, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Messiah a servant of sin? Certainly not.
18 “Now if I rebuild the things that I destroyed, I acknowledge that I am a transgressor.
For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a law-breaker.
19 For through the law I died to the law in order to live to God.
For I, through the law, died to the law, that I might live to God.
20 I have been crucified with Christ, so it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me; what I now live in this body I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself in my place.
I have been crucified with Messiah, and it is no longer I that live, but Messiah living in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.
21 I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nothing!”
I do not make void the grace of God. For if righteousness is through the law, then Messiah died for nothing."
