< Acts 13 >
1 Now in the congregation that was in Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon (the one called Niger), Lucius the Cyrenian, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch), and Saul.
Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers; Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius the Cyrenaean, and Manaen, the foster-brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 As they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart to me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them!”
And while they were ministering to the Lord, and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.
3 Then, having fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them off.
Then, after they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
4 So, having been sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they sailed to Cyprus.
They therefore being sent forth by the Holy Spirit, came down to Seleucia, and from thence sailed to Cyprus.
5 And upon arriving in Salamis, they started proclaiming the Word of God in the synagogues of the Jews (also they had John as assistant).
And having come to Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; and they had also John as an assistant.
6 Now when they had gone through the island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew named Bar-Jesus,
And when they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a certain magian, a Jewish false prophet, whose name was Bar-jesus,
7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul, really wanting to hear the Word of God.
who was with the proconsul of the country, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. He, having called for Barnabas and Saul, desired to hear the word of God.
8 But the sorcerer Elymas (for so his name is translated) opposed them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
But Elymas the magian (for so is his name interpreted) withstood them, seeking so turn away the proconsul from the faith.
9 Then Saul, also called Paul, filled with Holy Spirit and looking intently at him,
But Saul (who is also called Paul), filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his eyes on him
10 said: “O full of all deceit and all trickery, son of a devil, enemy of all righteousness! Will you not stop perverting the straight ways of the Lord?
and said, O full of all deceit, and of all mischief, son of the Devil, enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?
11 Well now, the Lord's hand is against you and you will be blind, not seeing the sun until next season!” Immediately mist and darkness engulfed him, and he started going around looking for someone to lead him by the hand.
And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou wilt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and darkness; and going about he sought to find some who would lead him by the hand.
12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had happened, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
Then the proconsul, when he saw what had taken place, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.
13 Then Paul and his party set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphilia (here John left them and returned to Jerusalem).
And Paul and his company, having put to sea from Paphos, came to Perga in Pamphylia. But John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem.
14 Going on from Perga they arrived in Antioch of Pisidia; and entering the synagogue on the Sabbath day, they sat down.
And they, going on from Perga, came to Antioch in Pisidia; and they went into the synagogue on the sabbath-day, and sat down.
15 After the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue leaders sent to them, saying, “Men, brothers, if you have a word of encouragement for the people, do speak.”
And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, Brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, speak.
16 So standing up and motioning with his hand, Paul said: “Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen.
Then Paul stood up, and beckoned with his hand and said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, hearken.
17 The God of this people chose our fathers, and prospered the people during their sojourn in the land of Egypt, and brought them out of it with an uplifted arm.
The God of this people chose our fathers, and he exalted the people in their sojourn in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm he brought them out of it;
18 For a period of about forty years He put up with them in the wilderness.
and for about forty years he nourished them in the wilderness.
19 And when He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He gave them possession of their land.
And having destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as a possession.
20 After these things, He gave judges for about four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet.
And after that, for about four hundred and fifty years, he gave judges, until Samuel the prophet.
21 And then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul, a son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
And afterward they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years;
22 And removing him He raised up for them David as king, about whom He gave witness and said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’
and having removed him, he raised up to them David to be their king, to whom he gave testimony, saying, “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will do all my will.”
23 God, from this man's seed, according to promise, has brought Salvation to Israel,
From the seed of this man hath God, according to his promise, brought to Israel a Saviour, Jesus;
24 John having heralded beforehand, in advance of His coming, a baptism of repentance to Israel.
before whose coming forward John had first preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
25 Well, as John was fulfilling his course, he said: ‘Whom do you suppose me to be? No I am not—but indeed He comes after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’
And as John was finishing his course, he said, Who do ye think that I am? I am not He. But lo I there cometh after me one, the sandal of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.
26 “Men, brothers, sons of the stock of Abraham, and those among you who fear God: to you the word of this salvation has been sent.
Brethren, sons of the stock of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you was the word of this salvation sent forth.
27 The Jerusalem dwellers and their rulers, understanding neither Him nor the voices of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning Him.
For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, not knowing him, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled them in condemning him.
28 Though they found no cause for death, they asked Pilate to have Him executed.
And though they found nothing deserving death in him, they asked of Pilate that he should be slain.
29 When they had fulfilled all things that were written about Him, they took Him down from the cross and placed Him in a tomb.
And when they had accomplished all that was written of him, they took him down from the cross, and laid him in a tomb.
30 But God raised Him from the dead;
But God raised him from the dead,
31 and for many days He was seen by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people.
and he was seen for many days by those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.
32 “Yes we proclaim to you the good news: the promise that was made to the fathers,
And we declare to you the glad tidings, that the promise which was made to the fathers
33 God has fulfilled the same to us, their children, when He raised up Jesus; as also it stands written in the second Psalm: ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you.’
God hath fulfilled to us their children, in raising up Jesus [[from the dead]]; as it is also written in the first Psalm: “Thou art my Son; I have this day begotten thee.”
34 And that He raised Him from the dead, no longer to return to corruption, He has spoken thus, ‘I will give you the holy things guaranteed to David.’
And that he raised him up from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he hath thus spoken: “I will give you the sure holy things promised to David.”
35 Further, it is stated elsewhere, ‘You will not allow your Holy One to see decay.’
Wherefore also in another Psalm he saith, “Thou wilt not suffer thy holy one to see corruption:”
36 Now David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw decay;
For David, after having in his own generation served the will of God, fell asleep, and was added to his fathers, and saw corruption;
37 but the One whom God raised up did not see decay.
but he whom God raised from the dead did not see corruption.
38 Therefore, let it be known to you, men, brothers, that through this One forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you;
Be it therefore known to you, brethren, that through this man is announced to you the forgiveness of sins;
39 and by Him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the Law of Moses.
and by him every one that believeth is justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
40 So take care, lest there come upon you that which has been spoken in the prophets:
Beware therefore, lest that come upon you which is spoken in the Prophets,
41 ‘Look you despisers, marvel and perish! For I am working a work in your days to which you will not give credence, even if someone were to explain it in detail to you.’”
“Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish! for I work a work in your days, a work which ye will not believe, though one should plainly declare it to you.”
42 Now as the Jews were going out of the synagogue, the Gentiles implored repeatedly that these words might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.
And as they were going out, they besought that these words might be spoken to them on the next sabbath.
43 The synagogue service having been dismissed, many of the Jews and the devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who started addressing them, urging them to continue in the grace of God.
And when the synagogue broke up, many of the Jews and proselyte worshippers followed Paul and Barnabas; who, speaking to them, exhorted them to continue in the grace of God.
44 Well the next Sabbath almost the whole city was gathered to hear the Word of God.
And on the next sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of the Lord.
45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with envy and started speaking against the things said by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.
But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with indignation, and spoke against what was spoken by Paul, contradicting and reviling.
46 But Paul and Barnabas speaking boldly said: “It was necessary that God's Word should be spoken to you first. But since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, now we are being turned to the Gentiles. (aiōnios )
Then Paul and Barnabas said boldly and plainly, It was necessary that the word of God should first be spoken to you; but seeing ye thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of the everlasting life, lo! we turn to the gentiles. (aiōnios )
47 Because that is just how the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have set you to be a light for ethnic nations, that you should be for salvation up to the last place on earth.’”
For thus hath the Lord commanded us: “I have set thee to be a light of the gentiles, that thou mayst bring salvation even to the end of the earth.”
48 Now upon hearing this, the Gentiles rejoiced and glorified the Word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal live believed. (aiōnios )
And when the gentiles heard this, they rejoiced, and glorified the word of the Lord; and as many as were ordained to everlasting life, believed. (aiōnios )
49 Well the Word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region.
And the word of the Lord was spread abroad throughout the whole country.
50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, and raised up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their borders.
But the Jews stirred up the women of rank who worshipped God, and the chief men of the city, and raised a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them from their borders.
51 So they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and went to Iconium.
But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came to Iconium.
52 But the disciples were filled with joy and with Holy Spirit.
And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
