< Acts 10 >
1 Now there was a certain man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,
Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment,
2 devout and fearing God with all his household, both giving alms generously to the people and praying to God about everything.
a devout man, and one who feared God with all his house, who gave gifts for the needy generously to the people, and always prayed to God.
3 About the ninth hour of the day, in a vision, he saw clearly an angel of God entering his presence and saying to him, “Cornelius!”
At about three in the afternoon, he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God coming to him, and saying to him, "Cornelius."
4 Well, staring at him and being frightened he said, “What is it, Lord?” So he said to him: “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.
He, fastening his eyes on him, and being frightened, said, "What is it, Lord?" He said to him, "Your prayers and your gifts to the needy have gone up for a memorial before God.
5 Now send men to Joppa and summon Simon, who is surnamed Peter;
Now send men to Joppa, and bring one Simon who is surnamed Peter.
6 he is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”
He lodges with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside."
7 So when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who were faithful to him,
When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his household servants and a devout soldier of those who waited on him continually.
8 and explaining everything to them he sent them to Joppa.
Having explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
9 Now on the next day, as they were traveling and drawing near to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray at about noon.
Now on the next day as they were on their journey, and got close to the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray at about noon.
10 Well he became hungry and wanted to eat; but while they were preparing, a trance fell on him,
He became hungry and desired to eat, but while they were preparing, he fell into a trance.
11 and he saw the heaven opened and a container like a great sheet descending to him—it was tied at the four corners and was being let down to the earth—
He saw heaven opened and a certain container descending to him, like a great sheet let down by four corners on the earth,
12 in which were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth (both wild animals and reptiles) and birds of the sky.
in which were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, crawling creatures and birds of the sky.
13 Then a voice came to him, “Get up, Peter, slaughter and eat!”
A voice came to him, "Rise, Peter, kill and eat."
14 But Peter said: “No way, Lord! Never have I eaten anything ‘common’ or unclean!”
But Peter said, "Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean."
15 So the voice came to him a second time, “What (pl) God has made clean you must not call ‘common’!”
A voice came to him again the second time, "What God has cleansed, you must not call unclean."
16 Well this happened three times, and then the object was taken back up into the sky.
This was done three times, and immediately the vessel was received up into heaven.
17 Now as Peter was really perplexed within himself as to what the vision that he had seen might mean, well the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having inquired and found Simon's house, stood before the gate,
Now while Peter was very perplexed within himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, look, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, stood before the gate,
18 and calling out they inquired whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, was staying there as a guest.
and called and asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, was lodging there.
19 So as Peter was pondering the vision the Spirit said to him: “Listen, some men are looking for you;
While Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Look, three men seek you.
20 so get up and go downstairs; and go with them, doubting nothing, for I have sent them.”
But arise, get down, and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them."
21 So going down to the men Peter said: “Yes, I am the one you are looking for. For what reason have you come?”
And Peter went down to the men, and said, "Look, I am the one whom you seek. Why have you come?"
22 So they said: “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man, well spoken of by all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by an angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you.”
They said, "Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous man and one who fears God, and well spoken of by all the Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to invite you to his house, and to listen to what you say."
23 So he invited them in and put them up. The next day Peter set out with them, also some of the brothers from Joppa went with him;
So he called them in and lodged them. On the next day he arose and went out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
24 and the following day they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his relatives and close friends.
On the next day he entered into Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his relatives and his near friends.
25 So when Peter actually arrived, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet and worshiped.
When it happened that Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell down at his feet, and worshiped him.
26 But Peter lifted him up, saying: “Stand up! I myself am also a man.”
But Peter raised him up, saying, "Stand up. I myself am also a man."
27 And conversing with him he went in and found many gathered there.
And as he talked with him, he went in and found many gathered together.
28 Then he said to them: “You know how it is unlawful for a Jewish man to associate with or to approach a different race; but God has shown me that I should not call any man ‘common’ or unclean.
He said to them, "You yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man who is a Jew to join himself or come to one of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean.
29 Therefore also I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. So I ask, for what reason did you send for me?”
Therefore also I came without complaint when I was sent for. I ask therefore, why did you send for me?"
30 So Cornelius said: “I have been fasting during four days until this very hour; yes, it was the ninth hour, I was praying in my house when wow, a man stood before me in shining clothing
Cornelius said, "Four days ago until this hour, at three in the afternoon, I was praying in my house, and look, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
31 and said: ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms are remembered before God.
and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer is heard, and your gifts to the needy are remembered in the sight of God.
32 Send therefore to Joppa and summon Simon, who is surnamed Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea; upon arriving he will speak to you.’
Send therefore to Joppa, and summon Simon, who is surnamed Peter. He lodges in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the seaside.'
33 So I sent to you at once, and you did well to come. Now then, we are all present before God to hear all the things commanded you by God.”
Therefore I sent to you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God to hear all things that have been commanded you by the Lord."
34 So opening his mouth Peter said: “Really, I comprehend that God is not One to show partiality,
And Peter opened his mouth and said, "Truly I perceive that God does not show favoritism;
35 but in every ethnic nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is acceptable to Him.
but in every nation he who fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him.
36 The word that He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all—
The word which he sent to the children of Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus (the) Messiah—he is Lord of all—
37 that spoken word you know, that was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism that John preached:
that spoken word you yourselves know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38 Jesus of Natsareth, how God anointed Him with Holy Spirit and power, who went about doing good and healing all those being oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him
even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
39 —yes, we are witnesses of all that He did, both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem—whom they also killed, hanging Him on a tree.
We are witnesses of everything he did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they also killed by hanging on a tree.
40 Him God raised on the third day, and gave Him to become visible,
God raised him up the third day, and gave him to be revealed,
41 not to all the people but to witnesses who had been chosen beforehand by God, to us, who ate and drank with Him after He arose out from the dead.
not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen before by God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42 And He ordered us to proclaim to the people, that is, to testify that He is the One who has been ordained by God as Judge of living and dead.
He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that this is the one who is appointed by God as the judge of the living and the dead.
43 To Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes into Him will receive forgiveness of sins.”
All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins."
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were hearing the message.
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word.
45 Well the believers of the circumcision [Jews] who had come with Peter were astonished, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had also been poured out on the Gentiles,
They of the circumcision who believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the non-Jewish people.
46 in that they heard them speaking languages and magnifying God. Then Peter responded:
For they heard them speaking in other tongues and magnifying God. Then Peter answered,
47 “Surely no one can forbid the water, can he, that these should not be baptized who received the Holy Spirit just like we did?”
"Can anyone withhold the water, that these who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we should not be baptized?"
48 So he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus (the) Messiah. Then they asked him to stay some days.
