< 1 Peter 5 >
1 The elders who are among you I exhort, I, the fellow elder and witness of Christ's sufferings; also the partaker of the glory that is to be revealed:
The seniors who are among you, I exhort, who am also a senior, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory which is to be revealed.
2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers willingly, not under compulsion; not for dishonest gain but freely;
Feed the flock of God, which is with you; exercising the overseer's office, not by constraint, but willingly; neither for the sake of sordid gain, but from good disposition;
3 neither as lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
neither as lording it over the heritage of God, but, being patterns to the flock:
4 And when the Chief Shepherd is revealed you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
and when the Chief Shepherd shall appear, you shall receive the crown of glory which fades not away.
5 Similarly, you younger ones, submit to elders. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, submitting to one another, because ‘God resists proud ones, but gives grace to humble ones.’
For the like reason, you younger persons subject yourselves to the seniors. Yes, all be subject to one another, and be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud but gives favor to the humble.
6 Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time;
Be humbled, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.
7 casting all your care upon Him, because He does the caring for you.
Cast all your anxious care on him, because he cares for you.
8 Be sober, stay alert! Because your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is circling you, looking for someone to devour;
Be sober, be vigilant: your adversary, the devil, is walking about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour:
9 withstand him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
whom resist, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the very same sufferings are accomplished in your brethren, who are in the world.
10 Now may the God of all grace, who called you into His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, Himself perfect, establish, strengthen and ground you—after you have suffered a while. (aiōnios )
And may the God of all favor, who has called us to his eternal glory, by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, himself make you complete; support, strengthen, establish you: (aiōnios )
11 To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. (aiōn )
to him be the glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. (aiōn )
12 I have written to you briefly by our faithful brother Silvanus, as I consider him, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand.
By Sylvanus, a faithful brother, (as I conclude, ) I have written to you in in few words, exhorting you, and strongly testifying that this is the true favor of God, in which you stand.
13 The jointly elect sister in ‘Babylon’ greets you; and so does Mark, my son.
They at Babylon, elected jointly with you, and Mark, my son, salute you.
14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you, all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
Salute one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all, who are in Christ Jesus.
