Psalms 56

1 Unto the end, for a people that is removed at a distance from the sanctuary for David, for an inscription of a title (or pillar) when the Philistines held him in Geth. Have mercy on me, O God, for man hath trodden me under foot; all the day long he hath afflicted me fighting against me.

برای رهبر سرایندگان: در مایۀ «کبوتر بر درختان بلوط دوردست». غزل داوود دربارۀ زمانی که فلسطینیان او را در جَت گرفتار کردند. ای خدا، بر من رحم فرما، زیرا مورد هجوم دشمنان قرار گرفته‌ام و مخالفانم هر روز عرصه را بر من تنگ‌تر می‌کنند.

2 My enemies have trodden on me all the day long; for they are many that make war against me.

تمام روز دشمنانم بر من یورش می‌آورند. مخالفانم که با من می‌جنگند بسیارند.

3 From the height of the day I shall fear: but I will trust in thee.

هنگامی که بترسم، ای خداوند، بر تو توکل خواهم کرد.

4 In God I will praise my words, in God I have put my trust: I will not fear what flesh can do against me.

وعده‌های خداوند را می‌ستایم و بر او توکل دارم، پس نخواهم ترسید، انسان فانی به من چه می‌تواند کرد؟

5 All the day long they detested my words: all their thoughts were against me unto evil.

دشمنانم تمام روز در فکر آزار من هستند و یک دم مرا راحت نمی‌گذارند.

6 They will dwell and hide themselves: they will watch my heel. As they have waited for my soul,

آنها با هم جمع شده در کمین می‌نشینند و تمام حرکات مرا زیر نظر گرفته، قصد جانم را می‌کنند.

7 For nothing shalt thou save them: in thy anger thou shalt break the people in pieces, O God,

خدایا، نگذار آنها با این همه شرارت، جان به در برند. با خشم خود آنها را سرنگون کن.

8 I have declared to thee my life: thou hast set my tears in thy sight, As also in thy promise.

تو از پریشانی من آگاهی؛ حساب اشکهایم را داری و آن را در دفترت ثبت کرده‌ای.

9 Then shall my enemies be turned back. In what day soever I shall call upon thee, behold I know thou art my God.

روزی که تو را به کمک بخوانم، دشمنانم شکست خورده، خواهند گریخت. یقین دارم که خداوند پشتیبان من است.

10 In God will I praise the word, in the Lord will I praise his speech.

وعده‌های خداوند را می‌ستایم و بر او توکل دارم،

11 In God have I hoped, I will not fear what man can do to me.

پس نخواهم ترسید. انسان به من چه می‌تواند کرد؟

12 In me, O God, are vows to thee, which I will pay, praises to thee:

خدایا، نذرهای خود را ادا خواهم کرد و قربانیهای تشکر را به درگاه تو تقدیم خواهم نمود،

13 Because thou hast delivered my soul from death, my feet from falling: that I may please in the sight of God, in the light of the living.

زیرا تو مرا از پرتگاه مرگ رهانیدی و نگذاشتی پایم بلغزد و نابود شوم تا بتوانم اکنون در نور حیاتی که در حضور توست راه روم.
