Proverbs 24
1 Seek not to be like evil men, neither desire to be with them:
Ne porte pas envie aux hommes méchants, et ne désire pas d’être avec eux;
2 Because their mind studieth robberies, and their lips speak deceits.
Parce que leur âme médite des rapines, et que leurs lèvres parlent fraudes.
3 By wisdom the house shall be built, and by prudence it shall be strengthened.
C’est par la sagesse que se bâtira une maison, et par la prudence qu’elle s’affermira.
4 By instruction the storerooms shall be filled with all precious and most beautiful wealth.
Par la science, les celliers se rempliront de toute sorte de biens précieux et très beaux.
5 A wise man is strong: and a knowing man, stout and valiant.
L’homme sage est puissant, et l’homme instruit est robuste et vigoureux.
6 Because war is managed by due ordering: and there shall be safety where there are many counsels.
Parce que c’est avec réflexion que s’entreprend une guerre; et que le salut sera où il y a beaucoup de conseils.
7 Wisdom is too high for a fool, in the gate he shall not open his mouth.
Bien élevée est pour l’insensé la sagesse à la porte de la ville, il n’ouvrira pas la bouche.
8 He that deviseth to do evils, shall be called a fool.
Celui qui pense à faire le mal sera appelé insensé.
9 The thought of a fool is sin: and the detracter is the abomination of men.
La pensée de l’insensé est péché; et c’est l’abomination des hommes, que le médisant.
10 If thou lose hope being weary in the day of distress, thy strength shall be diminished.
Si, fatigué au jour de l’angoisse, tu désespères, ta force sera diminuée.
11 Deliver them that are led to death: and those that are drawn to death forbear not to deliver.
Arrache au péril ceux qui sont conduits à la mort, et, ceux que l’on traîne à la destruction, ne cesse pas de les délivrer.
12 If thou say: I have not strength enough: he that seeth into the heart, he understandeth, and nothing deceiveth the keeper of thy soul, and he shall render to a man according to his works.
Si tu dis: Les forces me manquent; celui qui observe le cœur le discerne lui-même, rien ne trompe le conservateur de ton âme; et il rendra à l’homme selon ses œuvres.
13 Fat honey, my son, because it is good, and the honeycomb most sweet to thy throat:
Mange, mon fils, le miel, parce qu’il est bon, et le rayon doux à ton gosier.
14 So also is the doctrine of wisdom to thy soul: which when thou hast found, thou shalt have hope in the end, and thy hope shall not perish.
Telle est la doctrine de la sagesse à ton âme: quand tu l’auras trouvée, tu auras à tes derniers moments l’espérance et ton espérance ne périra pas.
15 Lie not in wait, nor seek after wickedness in the house of the just, nor spoil his rest.
Ne dresse pas d’embûches, et ne cherche pas l’impiété dans la maison du juste, et ne détruis pas son repos.
16 For a just mall shall fall seven times and shall rise again: but the wicked shall fall down into evil.
Car le juste tombera sept fois et se relèvera; mais les impies seront abattus dans le malheur.
17 When thy enemy shall fall, be not glad, and in his ruin let not thy heart rejoice:
Lorsque ton ennemi sera tombé, ne Le réjouis pas: et qu’à sa ruine ton cœur n’exulte pas;
18 Lest the Lord see, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.
De peur que le Seigneur ne le voie, et que cela ne lui déplaise; et qu’il ne retire de lui sa colère.
19 Contend not with the wicked, nor seek to be like the ungodly:
Ne dispute pas avec les hommes très méchants; et ne porte pas envie aux impies;
20 For evil men have no hope of things to come, and the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
Parce qu’ils n’ont pas l’espérance des choses futures, les méchants, et que la lampe des impies s’éteindra.
21 My son, fear the Lord and the king: and have nothing to do with detracters.
Crains, mon fils, le Seigneur et le roi, et ne te lie pas avec les médisants;
22 For their destruction shall rise suddenly: and who knoweth the ruin of both?
Parce que tout à coup s’élèvera leur perte, et la ruine de l’un et de l’autre, qui la connaît?
23 These things also to the wise: It is not good to have respect to persons in judgment.
Voici aussi pour les sages: Faire acception de la personne dans le jugement n’est pas bon.
24 They that say to the wicked man: Thou art just: shall be cursed by the people, and the tribes shall abhor them.
Quant à ceux qui disent à l’impie: Tu es juste; les peuples les maudiront et les tribus les détesteront.
25 They that rebuke him, shall be praised: and a blessing shall come upon them.
Ceux qui le reprennent seront loués; et sur eux viendra la bénédiction.
26 He shall kiss the lips, who answereth right words.
Il baisera les lèvres, celui qui répond des paroles droites.
27 Prepare thy work without, and diligently till thy ground: that afterward thou mayst build thy house.
Prépare au dehors ton œuvre, et avec soin cultive ton champ; afin qu’ensuite tu bâtisses ta maison.
28 Be not witness without cause against thy neighbour: and deceive not any man with thy lips.
Ne sois pas témoin sans raison contre ton prochain; et ne séduis personne par tes lèvres.
29 Say not: I will do to him as he hath done to me: I will render to every one according to his work.
Ne dis pas: Comme il m’a fait, ainsi je lui ferai: je rendrai à chacun selon son œuvre.
30 I passed by the field of the slothful man, and by the vineyard of the foolish man:
J’ai passé dans le champ du paresseux, et par la vigne de l’insensé:
31 And behold it was all filled with nettles, and thorns had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall was broken down.
Et voilà que tout était rempli d’orties; et que les épines en avaient couvert la surface, et que la muraille de pierres était détruite.
32 Which when I had seen, I laid it up in my heart, and by the example I received instruction.
Ce qu’ayant vu, je l’ai mis dans mon cœur, et par cet exemple je me suis instruit.
33 Thou wilt sleep a little, said I, thou wilt slumber a little, thou wilt fold thy hands a little to rest:
Tu dormiras un peu, dis-je, tu sommeilleras modérément, tu mettras faiblement les mains l’une dans l’autre, afin que tu reposes:
34 And poverty shall come to thee as a runner, and beggary as an armed man.
Et viendra à toi, comme un coureur, la détresse; et la mendicité, comme un homme armé.
