Nehemiah 13
1 And on that day they read in the book of Moses in the hearing of the people: and therein was found written, that the Ammonites and the Moabites should not come in to the church of God for ever:
En ce jour-là, on lut à haute voix au peuple le livre de Moïse, et on y trouva écrit: Que les Ammonites et les Moabites ne devaient jamais entrer dans l'Église de Dieu.
2 Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and water: and they hired against them Balaam, to curse them, and our God turned the curse into blessing.
Parce qu'ils n'étaient point venus au-devant d'Israël avec du pain et de l'eau, et qu'ils avaient salarié Balaam pour le maudire; mais, notre Dieu changea la malédiction en bénédiction.
3 And it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated every stranger from Israel.
Et lorsqu'ils eurent ouï la loi, tous ceux qui s'étaient mêlés à Israël en furent séparés.
4 And over this thing was Eliasib the priest, who was set over the treasury of the house of our God, and was near akin to Tobias.
Or, avant cela, Eliasib, le prêtre, très-proche allié de Tobias, demeurait dans le trésor du temple de notre Dieu.
5 And he made him a great storeroom, where before him they laid up gifts, and frankincense, and vessels, and the tithes of the corn, of the wine, and of the oil, the portions of the Levites, and of the singing men, and of the porters, and the firstfruits of the priests.
Et il s'était fait faire un vaste magasin dans le lieu où l'on déposait jadis les offrandes, l'encens, les vases, la dîme du blé, du vin et de l'huile, ce qui était dû aux lévites, aux chantres et aux portiers, et les prémices destinées aux prêtres.
6 But in all this time I was not in Jerusalem, because in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon, I went to the king, and after certain days I asked the king:
Et, en ce temps-là, je n'étais pas à Jérusalem. Car, dans la trente- deuxième année du règne d'Arthasastha, roi de Babylone, j'étais allé auprès du roi. Et, un certain nombre de jours étant accompli, je demandai au roi la permission de partir.
7 And I came to Jerusalem, and I understood the evil that Eliasib had done for Tobias, to make him a storehouse in the courts of the house of God.
Et je revins à Jérusalem, et je reconnus le mal qu'avait fait Eliasib avec Tobias en lui faisant un magasin dans le parvis du temple de Dieu.
8 And it seemed to me exceeding evil. And I cast forth the vessels of the house of Tobias out of the storehouse.
Et cela me parut très-mal; et je jetai hors du magasin tous les meubles de la maison de Tobias.
9 And I commanded and they cleansed the storehouses: and I brought thither again the vessels of the house of God, the sacrifice, and the frankincense.
Et je parlai, et on purifia le magasin, et j'y fis replacer les vases du temple, les offrandes et l'encens.
10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: and that the Levites, and the singing men, and they that ministered were fled away every man to his own country:
Et je reconnus qu'on n'avait plus donné la part des lévites, de sorte que les lévites et les chantres faisant œuvre au temple s'étaient enfuis chacun en sa terre.
11 And I pleaded the matter against the magistrates, and said: Why have we forsaken the house of God? And I gathered them together, and I made them to stand in their places.
Et je fis des reproches aux officiers, et je leur dis: D'où vient que le temple du Seigneur est abandonné? Puis, je rassemblai les lévites et les Chantres, et je les rétablis dans leurs fonctions.
12 And all Juda brought the tithe of the corn, and the wine, and the oil into the storehouses.
Alors, tout Juda apporta dans les trésors la dîme du froment; de l'huile et du vin,
13 And we set over the storehouses Selemias the priest, and Sadoc the scribe, and of the Levites Phadaia, and next to them Hanan the son of Zachur, the son of Mathania: for they were approved as faithful, and to them were committed the portions of their brethren.
Entre les mains de Sélémias le prêtre, de Sadoc le scribe, et de Phadaïa, l'un des lévites. Et ils avaient auprès d'eux Anan, fils de Zacchur, fils de Matthanias; car ils étaient réputés fidèles, et ils furent chargés de faire les distributions à leurs frères.
14 Remember me, O my God, for this thing, and wipe not out my kindnesses, which I have done relating to the house of my God and his ceremonies.
Souvenez-vous de moi, ô mon Dieu, à cause de cela; que mes bonnes œuvres dans le temple du Seigneur Dieu ne soient point effacées.
15 In those days I saw in Juda some treading the presses on the sabbath, and carrying sheaves, and lading asses with wine, and grapes, and figs, and all manner of burthens, and bringing them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day. And I charged them that they should sell on a day on which it was lawful to sell.
En ces jours-là, je vis que dans Juda quelques-uns pressuraient le vin le jour du sabbat; je vis que d'autres transportaient des gerbes, que d'autres encore chargeaient leurs ânes de vin, de grappes, de figues, de toutes sortes de fardeaux, et qu'ils les conduisaient à Jérusalem le jour du sabbat. Et je les avertis des jours où ils pouvaient trafiquer.
16 Some Tyrians also dwelt there, who brought fish, and all manner of wares: and they sold them on the sabbaths to the children of Juda in Jerusalem.
Et des gens s'étaient établis à Jérusalem, apportant du poisson, vendant toutes sortes de marchandises aux Juifs, le jour du sabbat.
17 And I rebuked the chief men of Juda, and said to them: What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day?
Et je réprimandai les fils de Juda de condition libre, et je leur dis: Quelle est cette mauvaise action que vous faites, en profanant le jour du sabbat?
18 Did not our fathers do these things, and our God brought all this evil upon us, and upon this city? And you bring more wrath upon Israel by violating the sabbath.
N'est-ce point là ce que faisaient vos pères? n'est-ce point la cause de tous les malheurs dont notre Dieu les à frappés, eux et notre ville? Et vous, n'attirerez-vous pas un surcroît de colère sur Israël en profanant le sabbat?
19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem were at rest on the sabbath day, I spoke: and they shut the gates, and I commanded that they should not open them till after the sabbath: and I set some of my servants at the gates, that none should bring in burthens on the sabbath day.
Or, quand les portes de Jérusalem furent rétablie, la veille d'un sabbat, je parlai, et on ferma les portes; je parlai, et on ne les ouvrit qu'après le sabbat, et je mis de mes serviteurs à chaque porte pour qu'on ne pût introduire des fardeaux le jour du sabbat.
20 So the merchants, and they that sold all kinds of wares, stayed without Jerusalem once or twice.
Et tous les marchands passèrent la nuit en plein air, et ils vendirent une ou deux fois hors de Jérusalem.
21 And I charged them, and I said to them: Why stay you before the wall? if you do so another time, I will lay hands on you. And from that time they came no more on the sabbath.
Et je les avertis, et je leur dis: Pourquoi passez-vous la nuit devant les remparts? Si vous recommencez, j'étendrai la main sur vous. Depuis lors, ils ne vinrent plus le jour du sabbat.
22 I spoke also to the Levites that they should be purified, and should come to keep the gates, and to sanctify the sabbath day: for this also remember me, O my God, and spare me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.
Et je dis aux lévites qui s'étaient purifiés, et qui étaient venus garder les portes, de sanctifier le jour du sabbat: à cause de cela, souvenez-vous de moi, mon Dieu, et épargnez-moi, selon la plénitude de votre miséricorde.
23 In those days also I saw Jews that married wives, women of Azotus, and of Ammon, and of Moab.
Or, en ces jours-là, je vis que des Juifs avaient épousé des femmes d'Azot, et des Ammonites et des Moabites.
24 And their children spoke half in the speech of Azotus, and could not speak the Jews’ language, but they spoke according to the language of this and that people.
Et leurs fils parlaient à demi la langue d'Azot, et ils ne savaient point parler juif.
25 And I chid them, and laid my curse upon them. And I beat some of them, and shaved off their hair, and made them swear by God that they would not give their daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for their sons, nor for themselves, saying:
Et je les réprimandai, et je les maudis, et j'en frappai quelques-uns, et je leur rasai la tête, et je leur fis jurer devant Dieu de ne point donner leurs filles aux fils des étrangers, et de ne point faire épouser par leurs fils des filles étrangères, disant:
26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin in this kind of thing? and surely among many nations, there was not a king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: and yet women of other countries brought even him to sin.
N'est-ce pas là le péché de Salomon, roi d'Israël? Il n'y avait point son pareil parmi les rois des nations: il aimait Dieu, Dieu lui avait donné le royaume entier d'Israël, et les femmes étrangères le pervertirent.
27 And shall we also be disobedient and do all this great evil to transgress against our God, and marry strange women?
Que nous n'apprenions plus que vous faites ce péché; que vous violez l'alliance avec notre Dieu; que vous épousez des femmes étrangères.
28 And one of the sons of Joiada the son of Eliasib the high priest, was son in law to Sanaballat the Horonite, and I drove him from me.
Or, l'un des fils de Joad, le grand prêtre Elisab, était gendre de Sanaballat l'Horonite; je le chassai loin de moi.
29 Remember them, O Lord my God, that defile the priesthood, and the law of priests and Levites.
Souvenez-vous d'eux, ô Seigneur, à cause de la violation du sacerdoce, et de votre alliance, touchant les prêtres et les lévites.
30 So I separated from them all strangers, and I appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites, every man in his ministry:
Et je les purifiai de leur contact avec des étrangères, et je réglai les services journaliers des prêtres et des lévites,
31 And for the offering of wood at times appointed, and for the firstfruits: remember me, O my God, unto good. Amen.
Et l'offrande du bois des holocaustes au temps prescrit, lorsque l'on taille la vigne. Souvenez-vous de moi, ô mon Dieu, dans votre mansuétude.
