Luke 15
1 Now the publicans and sinners drew near unto him to hear him.
Les publicains et les pécheurs s'approchaient tous de lui pour l'entendre.
2 And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying: This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
Les Pharisiens et les Scribes en murmuraient: «Cet homme, disaient-ils, fait accueil à des pécheurs, et mange avec eux.»
3 And he spoke to them this parable, saying:
Alors il leur répondit par cette parabole:
4 What man of you that hath an hundred sheep: and if he shall lose one of them, doth he not leave the ninety-nine in the desert, and go after that which was lost, until he find it?
«Si l'un de vous a cent brebis et qu'il en égare une, ne laisse-t-il pas dans le déserta les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf autres, pour aller chercher celle qui s'est égarée, jusqu'à ce qu'il l'ait retrouvée?
5 And when he hath found it, lay it upon his shoulders, rejoicing:
Et quand il l'a retrouvée, il la met, tout joyeux, sur ses épaules;
6 And coming home, call together his friends and neighbours, saying to them: Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost?
et s'en allant en sa maison, il appelle ses amis et ses voisins et leur dit: «Réjouissez-vous avec moi, car j'ai retrouvé ma brebis perdue.»
7 I say to you, that even so there shall be joy in heaven upon one sinner that doth penance, more than upon ninety-nine just who need not penance.
C'est ainsi, je vous le déclare, qu'il y aura de la joie dans le ciel; il y en aura davantage pour un seul pécheur repentant que pour quatre-vingt-dix-neuf justes qui n'ont pas besoin de repentance.»
8 Or what woman having ten groats; if she lose one groat, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently until she find it?
«Soit encore une femme qui possède dix drachmes. Si elle en perd une, est-ce qu'elle n'allume pas une lampe, ne balaye pas la maison, ne la cherche pas soigneusement jusqu'à ce qu'elle l'ait retrouvée?
9 And when she hath found it, call together her friends and neighbours, saying: Rejoice with me, because I have found the groat which I had lost.
Et quand elle l'a retrouvée, elle appelle ses amies et ses voisines et leur dit: «Réjouissez-vous avec moi, car j'ai retrouvé la drachme que j'avais perdue.»
10 So I say to you, there shall be joy before the angels of God upon one sinner doing penance.
C'est ainsi, je vous le déclare, qu'il y a de la joie en présence des anges de Dieu pour un seul pécheur repentant.»
11 And he said: A certain man had two sons:
Il dit encore: «Un homme avait deux fils;
12 And the younger of them said to his father: Father, give me the portion of substance that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his substance.
le plus jeune dit à son père: «Père, donne-moi la part de fortune qui me revient.» Et le père leur partagea son bien.»
13 And not many days after, the younger son, gathering all together, went abroad into a far country: and there wasted his substance, living riotously.
Peu de jours après, le plus jeune fils, rassemblant tout ce qu'il avait, partit pour un pays lointain, et là il dissipa sa fortune dans une vie de débauche.
14 And after he had spent all, there came a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want.
Il avait tout dépensé quand survint, en ce pays-là, une très rude famine. Il commença à être dans l'indigence,
15 And he went and cleaved to one of the citizens of that country. And he sent him into his farm to feed swine.
et il alla se mettre au service de l'un des habitants du pays, qui l'envoya dans ses champs pour paître des pourceaux.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks the swine did eat; and no man gave unto him.
Là, il désirait avidement se rassasier des siliques que mangeaient les pourceaux, mais personne ne lui en donnait.
17 And returning to himself, he said: How many hired servants in my father’s house abound with bread, and I here perish with hunger?
Rentrant alors en lui-même, il dit: «Combien de gens à gages ont chez mon père en abondance de quoi se nourrir, tandis que moi, ici, je meurs de faim!
18 I will arise, and will go to my father, and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee:
Je me lèverai et j'irai vers mon père et je lui dirai: «Père, j'ai péché contre le ciel et contre toi!
19 I am not worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
Je ne suis plus digne d'être appelé ton fils! Traite-moi comme l'un de tes mercenaires.»
20 And rising up he came to his father. And when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and running to him fell upon his neck, and kissed him.
Il se leva donc et retourna vers son père. Comme il était encore loin, son père le vit; il fut ému de compassion; il accourut et, se laissant tomber à son cou, il le baisa longuement.
21 And the son said to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, I am not now worthy to be called thy son.
Le fils lui dit: «Père, j'ai péché contre le ciel et contre toi! je ne suis plus digne d'être appelé ton fils!»
22 And the father said to his servants: Bring forth quickly the first robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
Mais le père dit à ses serviteurs: «Apportez vite une robe de fête, la plus belle, et l'en revêtez! mettez un anneau à sa main! des chaussures à ses pieds!
23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it, and let us eat and make merry:
et puis amenez le veau gras et le tuez! Faisons festin et réjouissance!
24 Because this my son was dead, and is come to life again: was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
parce que mon fils que voici était mort, et il est revenu à la vie! il était perdu, et il est retrouvé!» Ils commencèrent à se réjouir.»
25 Now his elder son was in the field, and when he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing:
Or le fils aîné était dans les champs; comme il revenait et approchait de la maison, il entendit de la musique et des danses;
26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.
il appela un des domestiques et lui demanda ce que c'était.
27 And he said to him: Thy brother is come, and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe.
«Ton frère est de retour, lui répondit celui-ci, et ton père a tué le veau gras, parce qu'il l'a recouvré sain et sauf.»
28 And he was angry, and would not go in. His father therefore coming out began to entreat him.
Alors il se mit en colère, et ne voulut pas entrer. Son père sortit, et se mit à l'en prier;
29 And he answering, said to his father: Behold, for so many years do I serve thee, and I have never transgressed thy commandment, and yet thou hast never given me a kid to make merry with my friends:
mais lui, répondant à son père, lui dit: «Voilà tant et tant d'années que je te sers; je n'ai jamais désobéi à tes ordres, et tu ne m'as jamais donné un chevreau pour faire fête avec mes amis;
30 But as soon as this thy son is come, who hath devoured his substance with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.
et quand est revenu ton autre fils, qui a dévoré son bien avec des femmes de mauvaise vie, pour lui tu as tué le veau gras!»
31 But he said to him: Son, thou art always with me, and all I have is thine.
«Mon enfant, lui dit le père, tu es toujours avec moi, et tout ce qui est à moi est à toi;
32 But it was fit that we should make merry and be glad, for this thy brother was dead and is come to life again; he was lost, and is found.
mais il fallait bien faire grande fête et réjouissance, parce que ton frère que voilà était mort, et il est revenu à la vie! il était perdu, et il est retrouvé!»
