Luke 12
1 And when great multitudes stood about him, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Sur ces entrefaites, les gens s'étant rassemblés par milliers, au point de se fouler les uns les autres, Jésus se mit à dire à ses disciples: " Gardez-vous avant tout du levain des Pharisiens, qui est l'hypocrisie.
2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed: nor hidden, that shall not be known.
Il n'y a rien de caché qui ne doive être révélé, rien de secret qui ne doive être connu.
3 For whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness, shall be published in the light: and that which you have spoken in the ear in the chambers, shall be preached on the housetops.
C'est pourquoi, tout ce que vous aurez dit dans les ténèbres, on l'entendra au grand jour; et ce que vous aurez dit à l'oreille dans l'intérieur de la maison, sera publié sur les toits.
4 And I say to you, my friends: Be not afraid of them who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.
Mais je vous dis, à vous qui êtes mes amis: Ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps, et qui après cela ne peuvent rien faire de plus.
5 But I will shew you whom you shall fear: fear ye him, who after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you, fear him. (Geenna g1067)
Je vais vous apprendre qui vous devez craindre: craignez celui qui, après avoir tué, a le pouvoir de jeter dans la géhenne; oui, je vous le dis, craignez celui-là. (Geenna g1067)
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
Cinq passereaux ne se vendent-ils pas deux as? Et pas un d'eux n'est en oubli devant Dieu.
7 Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows.
Mais les cheveux mêmes de votre tête sont tous comptés. Ne craignez donc point: vous êtes de plus de prix que beaucoup de passereaux.
8 And I say to you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God.
Je vous le dis encore, quiconque m'aura confessé devant les hommes, le Fils de l'homme aussi le confessera devant les anges de Dieu;
9 But he that shall deny me before men, shall be denied before the angels of God.
mais celui qui m'aura renié devant les hommes, sera renié devant les anges de Dieu.
10 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but to him that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven.
Et quiconque parlera contre le Fils de l'homme, obtiendra le pardon; mais pour celui qui aura blasphémé contre l'Esprit-Saint, il n'y aura point de pardon.
11 And when they shall bring you into the synagogues, and to magistrates and powers, be not solicitous how or what you shall answer, or what you shall say;
Quand on vous conduira devant les synagogues, les magistrats et les autorités, ne vous mettez point en peine de la manière dont vous vous défendrez, ni de ce que vous direz;
12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you must say.
car le Saint-Esprit vous enseignera à l'heure même ce qu'il faudra dire. "
13 And one of the multitude said to him: Master, speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me.
Alors du milieu de la foule quelqu'un dit à Jésus: " Maître, dites à mon frère de partager avec moi notre héritage. "
14 But he said to him: Man, who hath appointed me judge, or divider, over you?
Jésus lui répondit: " Homme, qui m'a établi pour être votre juge, ou pour faire vos partages? "
15 And he said to them: Take heed and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life doth not consist in the abundance of things which he possesseth.
Et il dit au peuple: " Gardez-vous avec soin de toute avarice; car, dans l'abondance même, la vie d'un homme ne dépend pas des biens qu'il possède. "
16 And he spoke a similitude to them, saying: The land of a certain rich man brought forth plenty of fruits.
Puis il leur dit cette parabole: " Il y avait un homme riche dont le domaine avait beaucoup rapporté.
17 And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
Et il s'entretenait en lui-même de ces pensées: Que ferai-je? car je n'ai pas de place pour serrer ma récolte.
18 And he said: This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and will build greater; and into them will I gather all things that are grown to me, and my goods.
Voici, dit-il, ce que je ferai. J'abattrai mes greniers, et j'en construirai de plus grands, et j'y amasserai la totalité de mes récoltes et de mes biens.
19 And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years take thy rest; eat, drink, make good cheer.
Et je dirai à mon âme: Mon âme, tu as de grands biens en réserve pour beaucoup d'années; repose-toi, mange, bois, fais bonne chère.
20 But God said to him: Thou fool, this night do they require thy soul of thee: and whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?
Mais Dieu lui dit: Insensé! cette nuit même on te redemandera ton âme; et ce que tu as mis en réserve, pour qui sera-t-il?
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God.
Il en est ainsi de l'homme qui amasse des trésors pour lui-même, et qui n'est pas riche devant Dieu. "
22 And he said to his disciples: Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat; nor for your body, what you shall put on.
Jésus dit ensuite à ses disciples: " C'est pourquoi je vous dis: Ne vous inquiétez pas pour votre vie, de ce que vous mangerez; ni pour votre corps, de quoi vous le vêtirez.
23 The life is more than the meat, and the body is more than the raiment.
La vie est plus que la nourriture, et le corps plus que le vêtement.
24 Consider the ravens, for they sow not, neither do they reap, neither have they storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them. How much are you more valuable than they?
Considérez les corbeaux: ils ne sèment ni ne moissonnent; ils n'ont ni cellier ni grenier, et Dieu les nourrit. Combien ne valez-vous pas plus que ces oiseaux?
25 And which of you, by taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit?
Qui de vous pourrait, à force de soucis, ajouter une coudée à la longueur de sa vie?
26 If then ye be not able to do so much as the least thing, why are you solicitous for the rest?
Si donc les moindres choses sont au-dessus de votre pouvoir, pourquoi vous inquiétez-vous des autres?
27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. But I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these.
Considérez les lis, comment ils croissent, ils ne travaillent ni ne filent, et, je vous le dis, Salomon dans toute sa gloire n'était pas vêtu comme l'un d'eux.
28 Now if God clothe in this manner the grass that is today in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven; how much more you, O ye of little faith?
Si Dieu revêt de la sorte l'herbe, qui est aujourd'hui dans les champs et qui demain sera jetée au four, combien plus le fera-t-il pour vous, hommes de peu de foi!
29 And seek not you what you shall eat, or what you shall drink: and be not lifted up on high.
Vous non plus, ne cherchez pas ce que vous mangerez ou ce que vous boirez, et ne soyez pas en suspens dans l'inquiétude.
30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek. But your Father knoweth that you have need of these things.
Car ce sont les gens de ce monde qui se préoccupent de toutes ces choses; mais votre Père sait que vous en avez besoin.
31 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.
Au reste, cherchez le royaume de Dieu, et tout cela vous sera donné par surcroît.
32 Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom.
Ne craignez point, petit troupeau, car il a plus à votre Père de vous donner le royaume.
33 Sell what you possess and give alms. Make to yourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in heaven which faileth not: where no thief approacheth, nor moth corrupteth.
Vendez ce que vous avez, et donnez l'aumône. Faites-vous des bourses que le temps n'use pas, un trésor inépuisable dans les cieux, où les voleurs n'ont point d'accès, et où les mites ne rongent point.
34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Car là où est votre trésor, là aussi sera votre cœur.
35 Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands.
Ayez la ceinture aux reins et vos lampes allumées!
36 And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately.
Soyez semblables à des hommes qui attendent le moment où leur maître reviendra des noces, afin que, dès qu'il arrivera et frappera à la porte, ils lui ouvrent aussitôt.
37 Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, that he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and passing will minister unto them.
Heureux ces serviteurs que le maître, à son retour, trouvera veillant! Je vous le dis en vérité, il se ceindra, il les fera mettre à table, et s'approchera pour les servir.
38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.
Qu'il arrive à la deuxième veille, qu'il arrive à la troisième, s'il les trouve ainsi, heureux ces serviteurs!
39 But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open.
Mais sachez bien que si le père de famille savait à quelle heure le voleur doit venir, il veillerait et ne laisserait point percer sa maison.
40 Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not, the Son of man will come.
Vous aussi, tenez-vous prêts, car le Fils de l'homme viendra à l'heure que vous ne pensez pas. "
41 And Peter said to him: Lord, dost thou speak this parable to us, or likewise to all?
Alors Pierre lui dit: " Est-ce à nous que vous adressez cette parabole, ou bien est-ce aussi à tous? "
42 And the Lord said: Who (thinkest thou) is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord setteth over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season?
Le Seigneur répondit: " Quel est l'économe fidèle et sage que le maître établira sur ses serviteurs, pour distribuer, au temps convenable, la mesure de froment?
43 Blessed is that servant, whom when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing.
Heureux ce serviteur, que le maître, à son arrivée, trouvera agissant ainsi!
44 Verily I say to you, he will set him over all that he possesseth.
Je vous le dis, en vérité, il l'établira sur tous ses biens.
45 But if that servant shall say in his heart: My lord is long a coming; and shall begin to strike the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and to drink and be drunk:
Mais si ce serviteur dit en lui-même: Mon maître tarde à venir; et qu'il se mette à battre les serviteurs et les servantes, à manger, à boire et à s'enivrer,
46 The lord of that servant will come in the day that he hopeth not, and at the hour that he knoweth not, and shall separate him, and shall appoint him his portion with unbelievers.
le maître de ce serviteur viendra au jour où il ne s'attend pas et à l'heure qu'il ne sait pas, et il le fera déchirer de coups, et lui assignera sa part avec les infidèles.
47 And that servant who knew the will of his lord, and prepared not himself, and did not according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
Ce serviteur-là qui aura connu la volonté de son maître, et qui n'aura rien tenu prêt, ni agi selon sa volonté, recevra un grand nombre de coups.
48 But he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required: and to whom they have committed much, of him they will demand the more.
Mais celui qui ne l'aura pas connue, et qui aura fait des choses dignes de châtiment, recevra peu de coups. On exigera beaucoup de celui à qui l'on a beaucoup donné; et plus on aura confié à quelqu'un, plus on lui demandera.
49 I am come to cast fire on the earth; and what will I, but that it be kindled?
Je suis venu jeter le feu sur la terre, et que désiré-je, si déjà il est allumé?
50 And I have a baptism wherewith I am to be baptized: and how am I straitened until it be accomplished?
Je dois encore être baptisé d'un baptême, et quelle angoisse en moi jusqu'à ce qu'il soit accompli!
51 Think ye, that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, no; but separation.
Pensez-vous que je sois venu établir la paix sur la terre? Non, vous dis-je, mais bien la division.
52 For there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided: three against two, and two against three.
Car désormais, s'il y a cinq personnes dans une maison, elles seront divisés, trois contre deux, et deux contre trois;
53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against his father, the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother, the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
le père sera divisé contre son fils, et le fils contre son père; la mère contre sa fille et la fille contre sa mère; la belle-mère contre sa belle-fille, et la belle-fille contre sa belle-mère. "
54 And he said also to the multitudes: When you see a cloud rising from the west, presently you say: A shower is coming: and so it happeneth:
Il disait encore au peuple: " Lorsque vous voyez la nuée se lever au couchant, vous dites aussitôt: La pluie vient; et cela arrive ainsi.
55 And when ye see the south wind blow, you say: There will be heat: and it cometh to pass.
Et quand vous voyez souffler le vent du midi, vous dites: Il fera chaud, et cela arrive.
56 You hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the heaven and of the earth: but how is it that you do not discern this time?
Hypocrites, vous savez reconnaître les aspects du ciel et de la terre; comment donc ne reconnaissez-vous pas le temps où nous sommes?
57 And why even of yourselves, do you not judge that which is just?
Et comment ne discernez-vous pas de vous-mêmes ce qui est juste?
58 And when thou goest with thy adversary to the prince, whilst thou art in the way, endeavour to be delivered from him: lest perhaps he draw thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the exacter, and the exacter cast thee into prison.
En effet, lorsque tu te rends avec ton adversaire devant le magistrat, tâche en chemin de te dégager de sa poursuite, de peur qu'il ne te traîne devant le juge, et que le juge ne te livre à l'officier de justice, et que celui-ci ne te jette en prison.
59 I say to thee, thou shalt not go out thence, until thou pay the very last mite.
Je te le dis, tu ne sortiras point de là que tu n'aies payé jusqu'à la dernière obole. "
