Luke 1
1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a narration of the things that have been accomplished among us;
Après que plusieurs ont entrepris de composer une relation des choses dont on a parmi nous pleine conviction,
2 According as they have delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word:
conformément à ce que nous ont transmis ceux qui ont été dès le commencement, témoins oculaires et ministres de la parole;
3 It seemed good to me also, having diligently attained to all things from the beginning, to write to thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
j'ai résolu moi aussi, après m'être appliqué à connaître exactement toutes choses depuis l'origine, de t'en écrire le récit suivi, excellent Théophile,
4 That thou mayest know the verity of those words in which thou hast been instructed.
afin que tu reconnaisses la certitude des enseignements que tu as reçus.
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zachary, of the course of Abia; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth.
Aux jours d'Hérode, roi de Judée, il y avait un prêtre, nommé Zacharie, de la classe d'Abia; et sa femme, qui était une des filles d'Aaron, s'appelait Elisabeth.
6 And they were both just before God, walking in all the commandments and justifications of the Lord without blame.
Tous deux étaient justes devant Dieu, marchant dans tous les commandements et ordonnances du Seigneur, d'une manière irréprochable.
7 And they had no son, for that Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.
Ils n'avaient point d'enfants, parce qu'Elisabeth était stérile, et ils étaient l'un et l'autre avancés en âge.
8 And it came to pass, when he executed the priestly function in the order of his course before God,
Or, pendant que Zacharie s'acquittait devant Dieu des fonctions sacerdotales, dans l'ordre de sa classe,
9 According to the custom of the priestly office, it was his lot to offer incense, going into the temple of the Lord.
il fut désigné par le sort, selon la coutume observée par les prêtres, pour entrer dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur et y offrir l'encens.
10 And all the multitude of the people was praying without, at the hour of incense.
Et toute la multitude du peuple était dehors en prière à l'heure de l'encens.
11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the alter of incense.
Mais un ange du Seigneur lui apparut, debout à droite de l'autel de l'encens.
12 And Zachary seeing him, was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
Zacharie, en le voyant, fut troublé, et la crainte le saisit.
13 But the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachary, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John:
Mais l'ange lui dit: " Ne crains point, Zacharie, car ta prière a été exaucée; ta femme Elisabeth te donnera un fils que tu appelleras Jean.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice in his nativity.
Il sera pour toi un sujet de joie et d'allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance;
15 For he shall be great before the Lord; and shall drink no wine nor strong drink: and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
car il sera grand devant le Seigneur. Il ne boira ni vin, ni rien qui enivre, car il sera rempli de l'Esprit-Saint dès le sein de sa mère.
16 And he shall convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
Il convertira beaucoup d'enfants d'Israël au Seigneur leur Dieu;
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias; that he may turn the hearts of the fathers unto the children, and the incredulous to the wisdom of the just, to prepare unto the Lord a perfect people.
et lui-même marchera devant lui, dans l'esprit et la puissance d'Elie, pour ramener les cœurs des pères vers les enfants, et les indociles à la sagesse des justes, afin de préparer au Seigneur un peuple parfait. "
18 And Zachary said to the angel: Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.
Zacharie dit à l'ange: " A quoi reconnaîtrai-je que cela sera? Car je suis vieux, et ma femme est avancée en âge. "
19 And the angel answering, said to him: I am Gabriel, who stand before God: and am sent to speak to thee, and to bring thee these good tidings.
L'ange lui répondit: " Je suis Gabriel, qui me tiens devant Dieu; j'ai été envoyé pour te parler et t'annoncer cette heureuse nouvelle.
20 And behold, thou shalt be dumb, and shalt not be able to speak until the day wherein these things shall come to pass, because thou hast not believed my words, which shall be fulfilled in their time.
Et voici que tu seras muet et ne pourras parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront, parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s'accompliront en leur temps. "
21 And the people were waiting for Zachary; and they wondered that he tarried so long in the temple.
Cependant le peuple attendait Zacharie, et il s'étonnait qu'il demeurât si longtemps dans le sanctuaire.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them: and they understood that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he made signs to them, and remained dumb.
Mais étant sorti, il ne pouvait leur parler, et ils comprirent qu'il avait eu une vision dans le sanctuaire, ce qu'il leur faisait entendre par signes; et il resta muet.
23 And it came to pass, after the days of his office were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
Quand les jours de son ministère furent accomplis, il s'en alla en sa maison.
24 And after those days, Elizabeth his wife conceived, and hid herself five months, saying:
Quelque temps après, Elisabeth, sa femme, conçut, et elle se tint cachée pendant cinq mois, disant:
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he hath had regard to take away my reproach among men.
" C'est une grâce que le Seigneur m'a faite, au jour où il m'a regardée pour ôter mon opprobre parmi les hommes. "
26 And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
Au sixième mois, l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé de Dieu dans une ville de Galilée appelée Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
auprès d'une vierge qui était fiancée à un homme de la maison de David, nommé Joseph, et le nom de la vierge était Marie.
28 And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
L'ange étant entré où elle était, lui dit: " Je vous salue, pleine de grâce; le Seigneur est avec vous, vous êtes bénie entre les femmes. "
29 Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.
Marie l'ayant aperçu, fut troublée de ses paroles, et elle se demandait ce que pouvait signifier cette salutation.
30 And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.
L'ange lui dit: " Ne craignez point, Marie, car vous avez trouvé grâce devant Dieu.
31 Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.
Voici que vous concevrez en votre sein, et vous enfanterez un fils, et vous lui donnerez le nom de Jésus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father;
Il sera grand, on l'appellera le Fils du Très-Haut; le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David son père;
33 and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever. And of his kingdom there shall be no end. (aiōn g165)
il règnera éternellement sur la maison de Jacob, et son règne n'aura point de fin." (aiōn g165)
34 And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?
Marie dit à l'ange: " Comment cela se fera-t-il, puisque je ne connais point d'homme? "
35 And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
L'ange lui répondit: " L'Esprit-Saint viendra sur vous, et la vertu du Très-Haut vous couvrira de son ombre. C'est pourquoi l'être saint qui naîtra (de vous) sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
36 And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:
Déjà Elisabeth, votre parente, a conçu elle aussi, un fils dans sa vieillesse, et c'est actuellement son sixième mois, à elle que l'on appelle stérile:
37 Because no word shall be impossible with God.
car rien ne sera impossible à Dieu. "
38 And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Marie dit alors: " Voici la servante du Seigneur, qu'il me soit fait selon votre parole. " Et l'ange la quitta.
39 And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda.
En ces jours-là, Marie se levant, s'en alla en hâte au pays des montagnes, en une ville de Juda.
40 And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.
Et elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie, et salua Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
Or, dès qu'Elisabeth eut entendu la salutation de Marie, l'enfant tressaillit dans son sein, et elle fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.
42 And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
Et élevant la voix, elle s'écria: " Vous êtes bénie entre les femmes, et le fruit de vos entrailles est béni.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Et d'où m'est-il donné que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne à moi?
44 For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Car votre voix, lorsque vous m'avez saluée, n'a pas plus tôt frappé mes oreilles, que mon enfant a tressailli de joie dans mon sein.
45 And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.
Heureuse celle qui a cru! car elles seront accomplies les choses qui lui ont été dites de la part du Seigneur! "
46 And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.
Et Marie dit: " Mon âme glorifie le Seigneur.
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
Et mon esprit tressaille de joie en Dieu, mon Sauveur,
48 Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Parce qu'il a jeté les yeux sur la bassesse de sa servante. Voici, en effet, que désormais toutes les générations m'appelleront bienheureuse,
49 Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name.
Parce qu'il a fait en moi de grandes choses, Celui qui est puissant, Et dont le nom est saint,
50 And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him.
Et dont la miséricorde s'étend d'âge en âge, Sur ceux qui le craignent.
51 He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
Il a déployé la force de son bras; Il a dissipé ceux qui s'enorgueillissaient dans les pensées de leur cœur;
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.
Il a renversé de leur trône les potentats, Et il a élevé les petits;
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
Il a comblé de biens les affamés, Et les riches, il les a renvoyés les mains vides.
54 He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy:
Il a pris soin d'Israël son serviteur, Se ressouvenant de sa miséricorde,
(Ainsi qu'il l'avait promis à nos pères) Envers Abraham et sa race, pour toujours. " (aiōn g165)
56 And Mary abode with her about three months; and she returned to her own house.
Marie demeura avec Elisabeth environ trois mois, et s'en retourna chez elle.
57 Now Elizabeth’s full time of being delivered was come, and she brought forth a son.
Cependant, le temps s'accomplit où Elisabeth devait enfanter, et elle mit au monde un fils.
58 And her neighbours and kinsfolks heard that the Lord had shewed his great mercy towards her, and they congratulated with her.
Ses voisins et ses parents, ayant appris que le Seigneur avait signalé en elle sa miséricorde, se réjouissaient avec elle.
59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him by his father’s name Zachary.
Le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour circoncire l'enfant, et ils le nommaient Zacharie d'après le nom de son père.
60 And his mother answering, said: Not so; but he shall be called John.
Mais sa mère, prenant la parole: " Non, dit-elle, mais il s'appellera Jean. "
61 And they said to her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
Ils lui dirent: " Il n'y a personne dans votre famille qui soit appelé de ce nom. "
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
Et ils demandaient par signe à son père comment il voulait qu'on le nommât.
63 And demanding a writing table, he wrote, saying: John is his name. And they all wondered.
S'étant fait apporter une tablette, il écrivit: " Jean est son nom "; et tous furent dans l'étonnement.
64 And immediately his mouth was opened, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.
Au même instant sa bouche s'ouvrit, sa langue se délia; et il parlait, bénissant Dieu.
65 And fear came upon all their neighbours; and all these things were noised abroad over all the hill country of Judea.
La crainte s'empara de tous les habitants d'alentour, et partout dans les montagnes de la Judée, on racontait toutes ces merveilles.
66 And all they that had heard them laid them up in their heart, saying: What an one, think ye, shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.
Tous ceux qui en entendirent parler les recueillirent dans leur cœur, et ils disaient: " Que sera donc cet enfant? Car la main du Seigneur était avec lui. "
67 And Zachary his father was filled with the Holy Ghost; and he prophesied, saying:
Et Zacharie, son père, fut rempli de l'Esprit-Saint, et il prophétisa, en disant:
68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people:
" Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, Parce qu'il a visité et racheté son peuple.
69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant:
Et qu'il a suscité une Force pour nous sauver, Dans la maison de David, son serviteur,
(Ainsi qu'il l'a promis par la bouche de ses saints, De ses prophètes, dès les temps anciens). (aiōn g165)
71 Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us:
Pour nous sauver de nos ennemis Et du pouvoir de tous ceux qui nous haïssent.
72 To perform mercy to our fathers, and to remember his holy testament,
Afin d'exercer sa miséricorde envers nos pères. Et de se souvenir de son pacte saint;
73 The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us,
Selon le serment qu'il fit à Abraham, notre père,
74 That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear,
De nous accorder que, sans crainte, Affranchis du pouvoir de nos ennemis,
75 In holiness and justice before him, all our days.
Nous le servions, avec une sainteté et une justice Dignes de ses regards, tous les jours de notre vie.
76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:
Quant à toi, petit enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut, Car tu marcheras devant la face du Seigneur, Pour lui préparer les voies;
77 To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins:
Pour apprendre à son peuple à reconnaître le salut Dans la rémission de leurs péchés:
78 Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:
Par l'effet de la tendre miséricorde de notre Dieu, Grâce à laquelle nous a visités, d'en haut, le Soleil levant,
79 To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.
Pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort, Pour diriger nos pas dans la voie de la paix. "
80 And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit; and was in the deserts until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
Or l'enfant croissait et se fortifiait en esprit, et il demeura dans le désert jusqu'au jour de sa manifestation devant Israël.
