Joshua 9
1 Now When these things were heard of, all the kings beyond the Jordan, that dwelt in the mountains and in the plains, in the places near the sea, and on the coasts of the great sea, they also that dwell by Libanus, the Hethite and the Amorrhite, the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite,
Lorsque ces nouvelles parvinrent aux rois des Amorrhéens de la rive droite du fleuve, à ceux de la montagne, à ceux du plat pays, à ceux de la côte de la grande mer, à ceux qui avoisinent l'Anti-Liban et aux Hettéens, aux Chananéens, aux Phérézéens, aux Evéens, aux Amorrhéens, aux Gergéeens et aux Jébuséens,
2 Gathered themselves together, to fight against Josue and Israel with one mind, and one resolution.
Ils se réunirent à la fois pour combattre Josué et Israël.
3 But they that dwelt in Gabaon, hearing all that Josue had done to Jericho and Hai:
En ce temps-là, les habitants de Gabaon ouïrent ce que le Seigneur avait fait de Jéricho et d'Haï.
4 Cunningly devising took for themselves provisions, laying old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles rent and sewed up again,
Eux aussi usèrent d'artifice; ils se pourvurent de vivres, se tinrent prêts et partirent, ayant lié sur leurs épaules de vieux sacs, de vieilles outres de vin déchirées.
5 And very old shoes, which for a show of age were clouted with patches, and old garments upon them: the leaves also, which they carried for provisions by the way, were hard, and broken into pieces:
Le tour de leurs chaussures ainsi que leurs sandales étaient usés et rapiécés; leurs vêtements montraient la corde, et le pain de leur approvisionnement était desséché, moisi, rongé.
6 And they went to Josue, who then abode in the camp at Galgal, and said to him, and to all Israel with him: We are come from a far country, desiring to make peace with you. And the children of Israel answered them, and said:
Ils vinrent ainsi auprès de Josué, au camp d'Israël en Galgala, et ils dirent à Josué et à Israël: Nous arrivons d'une contrée lointaine, et maintenant faites avec nous une alliance.
7 Perhaps you dwell in the land which falls to our lot; if so, we can make no league with you.
Aussitôt, les fils d'Israël dirent à l'Horréen: Prenez garde; n'habitez- vous pas notre territoire? En ce cas, comment pourrions-nous faire alliance avec vous?
8 But they said to Josue: We are thy servants. Josue said to them: Who are you? and whence came you?
Mais ils répondirent à Josué: Nous sommes tes esclaves. Et Josué leur dit: D'ou êtes-vous? et d'ou venez-vous?
9 They answered: From a very far country thy servants are come in the name of the Lord thy God. For we have heard the fame of his power, all the things that he did in Egypt.
Ils reprirent: Tes esclaves arrivent d'une contrée très-lointaine, au nom du Seigneur ton Dieu; car nous avons ouï son nom, nous avons appris tout ce qu'il a fait en Egypte,
10 And to the two kings of the Amorrhites that were beyond the Jordan, Sehon king of Hesebon, and Og king of Basan, that was in Astaroth:
Et comment il a traité les rois des Amorrhéens qui étaient au delà du fleuve: Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, et Og, roi de Basan, qui demeurait en Astaroth et en Edraïn.
11 And our ancients, and all the inhabitants of our country said to us: Take with you victuals for a long way, and go meet them, and say: We are your servants, make ye a league with us.
A ces nouvelles, nos anciens et tous ceux qui habitent notre contrée nous ont dit: Prenez avec vous des vivres pour la route, allez à leur rencontre, et dites-leur: Nous sommes vos esclaves, et maintenant faites avec nous une alliance.
12 Behold, these leaves we took hot, when we set out from our houses to come to you, now they are become dry, and broken in pieces, by being exceeding old.
Voici nos pains qui étaient chauds quand nous nous en sommes approvisionnés, le jour où nous sommes partis pour venir près de vous; ils sont maintenant desséchés et rongés.
13 These bottles of wine when we filled them were new, now they are rent and burst. These garments we have on, and the shoes we have on our feet, by reason of the very long journey are worn out, and almost consumed.
Et ces outres de vin que nous avons remplies neuves, vous les voyez déchirées; cependant, nos vêtements et nos chaussures se sont usés durant notre bien long voyage.
14 They took therefore of their victuals, and consulted not the mouth of the Lord.
Alors, les chefs d'Israël prirent de ces provisions, et ils n'interrogèrent point le Seigneur.
15 And Josue made peace with them, and entering into a league promised that they should not be slain: the princes also of the multitude swore to them.
Josué leur accorda donc la paix; il fit avec eux une alliance qui les préserva de tout dommage, et les chefs de la synagogue leur prêtèrent serment.
16 Now three days after the league was made, they heard that they dwelt nigh, and they should be among them.
Trois jours après la conclusion de l'alliance, on leur apprit que c'étaient des voisins, et qu'ils habitaient leur territoire.
17 And the children of Israel removed the camp, and came into their cities on the third day, the names of which are Gabaon, and Caphira, and Beroth, and Cariathiarim.
Ensuite, les fils d'Israël levèrent leur camp, et eux allèrent à leurs villes; or, leurs villes étaient Gabaon, Caphira, Beroth et Cariathiarim.
18 And they slew them not, because the princes of the multitude had sworn in the name of the Lord the God of Israel. Then all the common people murmured against the princes.
Mais les fils d'Israël ne les combattirent point, parce que tous les chefs leur avaient prêté serment, au nom du Seigneur Dieu d'Israël. Et tout le peuple se prit à murmurer contre les chefs.
19 And they answered them: We have sworn to them in the name of the Lord the God of Israel, and therefore we may not touch them.
Et les chefs dirent à tout le peuple: Nous leur avons prêté serment au nom du Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, et maintenant nous ne pouvons les toucher.
20 But this we mill do to them: Let their lives be saved, lest the wrath of the Lord be stirred up against us, if we should be forsworn.
Voici ce que nous ferons: accordons-leur la vie et réservons-les, et il n'y aura point contre nous de colère, à cause du serment que nous leur avons prêté.
21 But so let them live, as to serve the whole multitude in hewing wood, and bringing in water. As they were speaking these things,
Ils vivront et ils seront les fendeurs de bois, les porteurs d'eau de toute la synagogue, comme les chefs le leur ont dit.
22 Josue called the Gabaonites and said to them: Why would you impose upon us, saying: We dwell far off from you, whereas you are in the midst of us?
Et Josué, les ayant appelés auprès de lui, leur dit: Pourquoi m'avez-vous trompé, disant: Nous sommes très-éloignés de toi; tandis que vous êtes de ceux qui habitent le territoire qui nous appartient?
23 Therefore you shall be under a curse, and your race shall always be hewers of wood, and carriers of water unto the house of my God.
Maintenant, vous voici nappés de malédiction; jamais vous ne cesserez d'être esclaves, fendeurs de bois, porteurs d'eau à mon service et au service de mon Dieu.
24 They answered: It was told us thy servants, that the Lord thy God had promised his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants thereof. Therefore we feared exceedingly and provided for our lives. compelled by the dread we had of you and we took this counsel.
Et ils répondirent à Josué, disant: On nous a rapporté que le Seigneur ton Dieu a prescrit à Moïse, son serviteur, de prendre possession de cette terre et d'exterminer devant vous, nous et tous ceux qui l'habitent; à votre approche, nous avons donc été remplis de crainte pour notre vie, et nous avons fait cette chose.
25 And now we are in thy hand: deal with us as it seemeth good and right unto thee.
Maintenant, voilà que nous sommes en vos mains; faites de nous ce qui vous sera agréable, ce que vous jugerez à propos.
26 So Josue did as he had said, and delivered them from the hand of the children of Israel, that they should not be slain.
Or, voilà ce qu'on fit à leur égard: ce jour-là même, Josué les retira des mains des fils d'Israël, et ceux-ci ne les tuèrent point;
27 And he gave orders in that day that they should be in the service of all the people, and of the altar of the Lord, hewing wood and carrying water, until this present time, in the place which the Lord hath chosen.
Et ce jour-là même, Josué en fit des fendeurs de bois, des porteurs d'eau pour tout le peuple, et pour l'autel du Seigneur. A cause de cela, les Gabaonites devinrent fendeurs de bois et porteurs d'eau pour l'autel du Seigneur; ils le sont encore de nos jours, et ils doivent servir au lieu qu'aura choisi le Seigneur.
