Job 31
1 I made a covenant with my eyes, that I would not so much as think upon a virgin.
J’ai fait alliance avec mes yeux: et comment aurais-je arrêté mes regards sur une vierge?
2 For what part should God from above have in me, and what inheritance the Almighty from on high?
Et quelle aurait été d’en haut [ma] portion de la part de Dieu, et, des hauts lieux, [mon] héritage de la part du Tout-puissant?
3 Is not destruction to the wicked, and aversion to them that work iniquity?
La calamité n’est-elle pas pour l’inique, et le malheur pour ceux qui pratiquent le mal?
4 Doth not he consider my ways, and number all my steps?
Lui, ne voit-il pas mon chemin, et ne compte-t-il point tous mes pas?
5 If I have walked in vanity, and my foot hath made haste to deceit:
Si j’ai marché avec fausseté, si mes pieds se sont hâtés vers la fraude,
6 Let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.
Qu’il me pèse dans la balance de justice, et Dieu reconnaîtra ma perfection.
7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and if my heart hath followed my eyes, and if a spot hath cleaved to my hands:
Si mon pas s’est détourné du chemin, et si mon cœur a suivi mes yeux, et si quelque souillure s’est attachée à ma main,
8 Then let me sow and let another eat: and let my offspring be rooted out.
Que je sème et qu’un autre mange, et que mes rejetons soient déracinés!…
9 If my heart hath been deceived upon a woman, and if I have laid wait at my friend’s door:
Si mon cœur s’est laissé attirer vers une femme et que j’aie fait le guet à la porte de mon prochain,
10 Let my wife be the harlot of another, and let other men lie with her.
Que ma femme tourne la meule pour un autre, et que d’autres se penchent sur elle;
11 For this is a heinous crime, and a most grievous iniquity.
Car c’est là une infamie, et une iniquité punissable par les juges:
12 It is a fire that devoureth even to destruction, and rooteth up all things that spring.
Car c’est un feu qui dévore jusque dans l’abîme et qui détruirait par la racine tout mon revenu…
13 If I have despised to abide judgment with my manservant, or my maidservant, when they had any controversy against me:
Si j’ai méprisé le droit de mon serviteur ou de ma servante quand ils contestaient avec moi,
14 For what shall I do when God shall rise to judge? and when he shall examine, what shall I answer him?
Que ferais-je quand Dieu se lèverait? et s’il me visitait, que lui répondrais-je?
15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him also: and did not one and the same form me in the womb?
Celui qui m’a fait dans le sein de ma mère, ne les a-t-il pas faits [eux aussi], et un seul et même [Dieu] ne nous a-t-il pas formés dans la matrice?…
16 If I have denied to the poor what they desired, and have made the eyes of the widow wait:
Si j’ai refusé aux misérables leur désir, si j’ai fait défaillir les yeux de la veuve;
17 If I have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof:
Si j’ai mangé seul mon morceau, et que l’orphelin n’en ait pas mangé; –
18 (For from my infancy mercy grew up with me: and it came out with me from my mother’s womb: )
Car dès ma jeunesse il m’a honoré comme un père, et dès le ventre de ma mère j’ai soutenu la [veuve]; …
19 If I have despised him that was perishing for want of clothing, and the poor man that had no covering:
Si j’ai vu quelqu’un périr faute de vêtement, et le pauvre manquer de couverture;
20 If his sides have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep:
Si ses reins ne m’ont pas béni, et qu’il ne se soit pas réchauffé avec la toison de mes agneaux;
21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw myself superior in the gate:
Si j’ai secoué ma main contre un orphelin, parce que je voyais mon appui dans la porte:
22 Let my shoulder fall from its joint, and let my arm with its bones be broken.
Que mon épaule se démette de sa jointure, et que mon bras cassé se détache de l’os!
23 For I have always feared God as waves swelling over me, and his weight I was not able to bear.
Car la calamité de la part de Dieu m’était une frayeur, et devant sa grandeur je ne pouvais rien…
24 If I have thought gold my strength, and have said to fine gold: My confidence:
Si j’ai mis ma confiance dans l’or, si j’ai dit à l’or fin: C’est à toi que je me fie;
25 If I have rejoiced over my great riches, and because my hand had gotten much.
Si je me suis réjoui de ce que mes biens étaient grands, et de ce que ma main avait beaucoup acquis;
26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, and the moon going in brightness:
Si j’ai vu le soleil quand il brillait, et la lune quand elle marchait dans sa splendeur,
27 And my heart in secret hath rejoiced, and I have kissed my hand with my mouth:
Et que mon cœur ait été séduit en secret, et que ma bouche ait embrassé ma main, –
28 Which is a very great iniquity, and a denial against the most high God.
Cela aussi serait une iniquité punissable par le juge, car j’aurais renié le Dieu qui est en haut; …
29 If I have been glad at the downfall of him that hated me, and have rejoiced that evil had found him.
Si je me suis réjoui dans la calamité de celui qui me haïssait, si j’ai été ému de joie lorsque le malheur l’a trouvé; –
30 For I have not given my mouth to sin, by wishing a curse to his soul.
Même je n’ai pas permis à ma bouche de pécher, de demander sa vie par une exécration; …
31 If the men of my tabernacle have not said: Who will give us of his flesh that we may be filled?
Si les gens de ma tente n’ont pas dit: Qui trouvera quelqu’un qui n’ait pas été rassasié de la chair de ses bêtes? –
32 The stranger did not stay without, my door was open to the traveller.
L’étranger ne passait pas la nuit dehors, j’ouvrais ma porte sur le chemin; …
33 If as a man I have hid my sin, and have concealed my iniquity in my bosom.
Si j’ai couvert ma transgression comme Adam, en cachant mon iniquité dans mon sein,
34 If I have been afraid at a very great multitude, and the contempt of kinsmen hath terrified me: and I have not rather held my peace, and not gone out of the door.
Parce que je craignais la grande multitude, et que le mépris des familles me faisait peur, et que je sois resté dans le silence et ne sois pas sorti de ma porte…
35 Who would grant me a hearer, that the Almighty may hear my desire; and that he himself that judgeth would write a book,
Oh! si j’avais quelqu’un pour m’écouter! Voici ma signature. Que le Tout-puissant me réponde, et que ma partie adverse fasse un écrit!
36 That I may carry it on my shoulder, and put it about me as a crown?
Ne le porterais-je pas sur mon épaule? Ne le lierais-je pas sur moi comme une couronne?
37 At every step of mine I would pronounce it, and offer it as to a prince.
Je lui déclarerais le nombre de mes pas; comme un prince je m’approcherais de lui…
38 If my land cry against me, and with it the furrows thereof mourn:
Si ma terre crie contre moi, et que ses sillons pleurent ensemble,
39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have afflicted the soul of the tillers thereof:
Si j’en ai mangé le revenu sans argent, et que j’aie tourmenté à mort l’âme de ses possesseurs,
40 Let thistles grow up to me instead of wheat, and thorns instead of barley.
Que les épines croissent au lieu de froment, et l’ivraie au lieu d’orge! Les paroles de Job sont finies.
