Jeremiah 20
1 Now Phassur the son of Emmur, the priest, who was appointed chief in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremias prophesying these words.
Et Phassur, le prêtre, fils d’Emmer, qui avait été établi prince dans la maison du Seigneur, entendit Jérémie prophétisant ces choses.
2 And Phassur struck Jeremias the prophet, and put him in the stocks, that were in the upper gate of Benjamin, in the house of the Lord.
Et Phassur frappa Jérémie, le prophète, et le jeta dans la prison qui était à la porte haute de Benjamin, dans la maison du Seigneur.
3 And when it was light the next day, Phassur brought Jeremias out of the stocks. And Jeremias said to him: The Lord hath not called thy name Phassur, but fear on every side.
Et lorsque le jour eut paru le lendemain, Phassur fit sortir Jérémie de prison, et Jérémie lui dit: Le Seigneur n’appelle plus ton nom, Phassur, mais l’épouvante de toutes parts.
4 For thus saith the Lord: Behold I will deliver thee up to fear, thee and all thy friends: and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thy eyes shall see it, and I will give all Juda into the hand of the king of Babylon: and he shall strike them with the sword.
Parce que voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Voilà que moi, je te livrerai à l’épouvante, toi et tous tes amis; et ils tomberont sous le glaive de leurs ennemis, et tes yeux le verront; et tout Juda, je le livrerai à la main du roi de Babylone; et il les transportera à Babylone, et il les frappera par le glaive.
5 And I will give all the substance of this city, and all its labour, and every precious thing thereof, and all the treasures of the kings of Juda will I give into the hands of their enemies: and they shall pillage them, and take them away, and carry them to Babylon.
Et je livrerai toutes les richesses de cette cité; et tout son travail, et tout ce qu’elle a de précieux, et tous les trésors des rois de Juda, je les livrerai à la main de leurs ennemis; et ceux-ci les arracheront, les enlèveront, et les conduiront à Babylone.
6 But thou, Phassur, and all that dwell in thy house, shall go into captivity, and thou shalt go to Babylon, and there thou shalt die, and there thou shalt be buried, thou and all thy friends, to whom thou hast prophesied a lie.
Mais toi, Phassur, et tous les habitants de ta maison, vous irez en captivité; et tu viendras à Babylone, et là tu mourras, et là tu seras enseveli, toi et tous tes amis à qui tu as prophétisé le mensonge.
7 Thou hast deceived me, O Lord, and I am deceived: thou hast been stronger than I, and thou hast prevailed. I am become a laughing-stock all the day, all scoff at me.
Vous m’avez séduit. Seigneur, et j’ai été séduit; vous avez été plus fort, et vous avez prévalu; je suis devenu un objet de dérision durant tout le jour; et tous me raillent.
8 For I am speaking now this long time, crying out against iniquity, and I often proclaim devastation: and the word of the Lord is made a reproach to me, and a derision all the day.
Parce que déjà depuis longtemps je parle, criant contre l’iniquité, et annonçant à grand bruit une désolation, et la parole du Seigneur est devenue pour moi un sujet d’opprobre et de dérision durant tout le jour.
9 Then I said: I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name: and there came in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was wearied, not being able to bear it.
Et j’ai dit: Je ne ferai pas mention de lui, et je ne parlerai plus en son nom; et alors il s’est allumé dans mon cœur comme un feu ardent, et renfermé dans mes os; et j’ai défailli, ne pouvant le soutenir.
10 For I heard the reproaches of many, and terror on every side: Persecute him, and let us persecute him: from all the men that were my familiars, and continued at my side: if by any means he may be deceived, and we may prevail against him, and be revenged on him.
Car j’ai entendu les outrages d’un grand nombre et la terreur tout autour de moi. Poursuivez-le, et nous le poursuivrons; j’ai entendu aussi de tous les hommes qui vivaient en paix avec moi, et qui se tenaient à mes côtés: Si en quelque manière il était trompé, et que nous prévalions contre lui, et que nous tirions vengeance de lui.
11 But the Lord is with me as a strong warrior: therefore they that persecute me shall fall, and shall be weak: they shall be greatly confounded, because they have not understood the everlasting reproach, which never shall be effaced.
Mais le Seigneur est avec moi comme un guerrier vaillant; c’est pour cela que ceux qui me persécutent tomberont et seront sans force; ils seront confondus grandement, parce qu’ils n’ont pas compris un opprobre éternel qui ne s’effacera jamais.
12 And thou, O Lord of hosts, prover of the just, who seest the reins and the heart: let me see, I beseech thee, thy vengeance on them: for to thee I have laid open my cause.
Et vous. Seigneur des armées, vous qui éprouvez le juste, et qui voyez les reins et les cœurs; que je voie, je vous prie, la vengeance que vous tirerez d’eux, car à vous j’ai révélé ma cause.
13 Sing ye to the Lord, praise the Lord: because he hath delivered the soul of the poor out of the hand of the wicked.
Chantez le Seigneur, louez le Seigneur, parce qu’il a délivré l’âme d’un pauvre de la main des méchants.
14 Cursed be the day wherein I was borne: let not the day in which my mother bore me, be blessed.
Maudit le jour auquel je suis né! que le jour auquel m’a enfanté ma mère ne soit pas béni!
15 Cursed be the man that brought the tidings to my father, saying: A man child is born to thee: and made him greatly rejoice.
Maudit l’homme qui Va annoncé à mon père, disant: Un enfant mâle t’est né, et qui l’a comme rempli de joie!
16 Let that man be as the cities that the Lord hath overthrown, and hath not repented: let him hear a cry in the morning, and howling at noontide:
Que cet homme soit comme sont les cités qu’a détruites le Seigneur, sans qu’il s’en soit repenti; qu’il entende des clameurs le matin, et des hurlements à l’heure de midi;
17 Who slew me not from the womb, that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb an everlasting conception.
Lui qui ne m’a pas tué avant ma naissance; en sorte que ma mère devînt mon sépulcre, et que sa grossesse fût éternelle,
18 Why came I out of the womb, to see labour and sorrow, and that my days should be spent in confusion?
Pourquoi suis-je sorti du sein de ma mère pour voir le travail et la douleur, et pour que mes jours fussent consumés dans la confusion?
