Jeremiah 15
1 And the Lord said to me: If Moses and Samuel shall stand before me, my soul is not towards this people: cast them out from my sight, and let them go forth.
L’Eternel me dit: "Quand Moïse et Samuel se présenteraient devant moi, mon âme ne se tournerait pas vers ce peuple; renvoie-le hors de ma présence, qu’il s’en aille!
2 And if they shall say unto thee: Whither shall we go forth? thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord: Such as are for death, to death: and such as are to the sword, to the sword: and such as are for famine, to famine: and such as are to captivity, to captivity.
Que s’ils te demandent: "Où irons-nous?" Tu leur répondras: "Ainsi parle l’Eternel: A la mort ceux qui sont destinés à la mort; au glaive ceux qui appartiennent au glaive; à la famine ceux qu’attend la famine; à la captivité ceux qui sont réservés à la captivité!
3 And I will visit them with four kinds, saith the Lord: The sword to kill, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy.
Je ferai appel contre eux à quatre genres de fléaux, dit l’Eternel, au glaive pour mettre à mort, aux chiens pour déchirer en lambeaux, aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre, pour dévorer et détruire.
4 And I will give them up to the rage of all the kingdoms of the earth: because of Manasses the son of Ezechias the king of Juda, for all that he did in Jerusalem.
Et je ferai d’eux un objet d’épouvante pour tous les peuples de la terre, à cause de Manassé; fils d’Ezéchias, roi de Juda, et sa façon d’agir à Jérusalem.
5 For who shall have pity on thee, O Jerusalem? or who shall bemoan thee? or who shall go to pray for thy peace?
Qui donc aura pitié de toi, ô Jérusalem, et qui te plaindra? Qui se détournera de son chemin pour t’offrir le salut de paix?
6 Thou hast forsaken me, saith the Lord, thou art gone backward: and I will stretch out my hand against thee, and I will destroy thee: I am weary of entreating thee.
Tu m’as abandonné, dit l’Eternel, tu t’es retirée en arrière! J’Ai, de mon côté, étendu la main sur toi pour te détruire; je suis las d’avoir compassion.
7 And I will scatter them with a fan in the gates of the land: I have killed and destroyed my people, and yet they are not returned form their ways.
Avec un tamis je les ai secoués sur les places publiques du pays; j’ai frappé mon peuple dans ses enfants, je l’ai ruiné: il n’est pas revenu de ses mauvaises voies!
8 Their widows are multiplied unto me above the sand of the sea: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young man a spoiler at noonday: I have cast a terror on a sudden upon the cities.
Autour de moi, ses veuves sont plus nombreuses que le sable des mers; pour le perdre, j’ai fait fondre sur la mère de jeunes guerriers les ravisseurs en plein midi à l’improviste, j’ai jeté sur elle le trouble et l’effroi.
9 She that hath borne seven is become weak, her soul hath fainted away: her sun is gone down, while it was yet day: she is confounded, and ashamed: and the residue of them I will give up to the sword in the sight of their enemies, saith the Lord.
Elle est désespérée, la mère qui a donné le jour à sept fils, elle exhale son âme; dans sa déception et sa confusion, elle voit son soleil se coucher quand il fait encore grand jour; et ceux qui survivent parmi eux, je les livre au glaive sous l’oeil de leurs ennemis": telle est la déclaration de l’Eternel.
10 Woe is me, my mother: why hast thou borne me a man of strife, a man of contention to all the earth? I have not lent on usury, neither hath any man lent to me on usury: yet all curse me.
Malheur à moi, ô ma mère! Pourquoi m’as-tu donné le jour, à moi homme de combat, en lutte avec tout le pays? Je ne suis pas créancier, je ne suis pas débiteur, et tous me maudissent!
11 The Lord saith to me: Assuredly it shall be well with thy remnant, assuredly I shall help thee in the time of affliction, and in the time of tribulation against the enemy.
L’Eternel répondit: "Je fais le serment que ton avenir est marqué pour le bonheur, que je contraindrai l’ennemi, à l’heure de l’adversité et du danger, à se tourner suppliant vers toi.
12 Shall iron be allied with the iron from the north, and the brass?
Se peut-il que le fer se brise, le fer venu du nord et l’airain?
13 Thy riches and thy treasures I will give unto spoil for nothing, because of all thy sins, even in all thy borders.
Ta richesse et tes trésors, je les livrerai au pillage, sans aucune compensation, à cause de tous tes péchés, dans toutes tes provinces.
14 And I will bring thy enemies out of a land, which thou knowest not: for a fire is kindled in my rage, it shall burn upon you.
Et, avec tes ennemis, je te ferai passer dans un pays que tu ne connais point, car un feu s’est allumé dans ma colère; c’est vous qu’il consumera.
15 O Lord, thou knowest, remember me, and visit me, and defend me from them that persecute me, do not defend me in thy patience: know that for thy sake I have sufferred reproach.
Toi, tu me connais, ô Eternel! Souviens-toi de moi, prends-moi sous ta garde. Venge-moi de mes persécuteurs, ne me laisse pas disparaître par l’effet de ta longanimité; reconnais que c’est pour toi que je supporte l’opprobre.
16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them, and thy word was to me a joy and gladness of my heart: for thy name is called upon me, O Lord God of hosts.
Dès que tés paroles me parvenaient, je les dévorais; oui, ta parole était mon délice et la joie de mon coeur, car ton nom est associé au mien, ô Eternel, Dieu-Cebaot.
17 I sat not in the assembly of jesters, nor did I make a boast of the presence of thy hand: I sat alone, because thou hast filled me with threats.
Je ne me surs point assis dans le cercle des railleurs pour me divertir; dominé par ta puissance, j’ai vécu isolé, car tu m’avais gonflé de colère.
18 Why is my sorrow become perpetual, and my wound desperate so as to refuse to be healed? it is become to me as the falsehood of deceitful waters that cannot be trusted.
Pourquoi donc ma souffrance dure-t-elle toujours? Pourquoi ma plaie est-elle si cuisante? Elle ne veut pas se cicatriser. En vérité, tu es à mon égard comme un ruisseau perfide, comme des eaux sur lesquelles on ne peut compter.
19 Therefore thus saith the Lord: If thou wilt be converted, I will convert thee, and thou shalt stand before my face; and if thou wilt separate the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: they shall be turned to thee, and thou shalt not be turned to them.
C’Est pourquoi voici ce que dit l’Eternel: "Si tu reprends ton oeuvre, je te reprendrai, tu auras ta place devant moi; et si tu extrais ce qu’il y a de précieux de ce qui est méprisable, tu me serviras encore d’interprète. C’Est à eux, alors, de revenir à toi, et non à toi de revenir à eux.
20 And I will make thee to this people as a strong wall of brass: and they shall fight against thee, and shall not prevail: for I am with thee to save thee, and to deliver thee, saith the Lord.
Et je t’établirai à l’encontre de ce peuple comme une puissante muraille d’airain; on te combattra, mais on ne pourra te vaincre, car je serai avec toi pour t’assister et te sauver, dit l’Eternel.
21 And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the mighty.
Je te délivrerai de la main des impies et t’affranchirai du pouvoir des violents."
