Genesis 48

1 After these things, it was told Joseph that his father was sick: and he set out to go to him, taking his two sons Manasses and Ephraim.

Ces choses s’étant ainsi passées, on annonça à Joseph que son père était malade; or, Joseph ayant pris avec lui ses deux fils, Manassé et Ephraïm, se mit en chemin.

2 And it was told the old man: Behold thy son Joseph cometh to thee. And being strengthened he sat on his bed.

Et on dit au vieillard: Voici votre fils Joseph qui vient vers vous. Or reprenant ses forces, il s’assit sur son lit.

3 And when Joseph was come in to him, he said: God Almighty appeared to me at Luza, which is in the land of Chanaan: and he blessed me,

Et quand Joseph fut entré près de lui, il dit: Le Dieu tout-puissant m’a apparu à Luza qui est dans la terre de Chanaan, et il m’a béni,

4 And he said: I will cause thee to increase and multiply, and I will make of thee a multitude of people: and I will give this land to thee, and to thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession.

Et a dit: Je te ferai croître et te multiplierai, et je te ferai le père d’une multitude de peuples; et je te donnerai cette terre, et à ta postérité après toi, en possession éternelle.

5 So thy two sons who were born to thee in the land of Egypt before I came hither to thee, shall be mine: Ephraim and Manasses shall be reputed to me as Ruben and Simeon.

C’est pourquoi tes deux fils qui te sont nés en Égypte, avant que je vinsse vers toi, seront miens. Ephraïm et Manassé comme Ruben et Siméon seront censés à moi.

6 But the rest whom thou shalt have after them, shall be thine, and shall be called by the name of their brethren in their possessions.

Mais les autres que tu auras engendrés après eux, seront tiens, et ils seront appelés du nom de leurs frères dans leurs possessions.

7 For, when I came out of Mesopotamia, Rachel died from me in the land of Chanaan in the very journey, and it was springtime: and I was going to Ephrata, and I buried her near the way of Ephrata, which by another name is called Bethlehem.

Car, lorsque je venais de Mésopotamie, Rachel me mourut en chemin même, dans la terre de Chanaan, et c’était le printemps: j’entrais à Ephrata, et je l’ensevelis près du chemin d’Ephrata, qui est appelée d’un autre nom Bethléhem.

8 Then seeing his sons, he said to him: Who are these?

Or, voyant ses fils, il lui dit: Qui sont ceux-ci?

9 He answered: They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said: Bring them to me that I may bless them.

Joseph répondit: Ce sont mes fils que Dieu m’a donnés en ce lieu. Approche-les de moi, dit Jacob, afin que je les bénisse.

10 For Israel’s eyes were dim by reason of his great age, and he could not see clearly. And when they were brought to him, he kissed and embraced them.

Car les yeux d’Israël étaient obscurcis, à cause de sa grande vieillesse, et il ne pouvait voir distinctement. Lors donc qu’ils furent approchés de lui, les ayant baisés et embrassés,

11 And said to his son: I am not deprived of seeing thee: moreover God hath showed me thy seed.

Il dit à son fils: Je n’ai pas été privé de te voir; de plus. Dieu m’a montré ta postérité.

12 And when Joseph had taken them from his father’s lap, he bowed down with his face to the ground.

Lorsque Joseph les eut retirés des bras de son père, il se prosterna, incliné vers la terre.

13 And he set Ephraim on his right hand, that is, towards the left hand of Israel; but Manasses on his left hand, to wit, towards his father’s right hand, and brought them near to him.

Puis, il plaça Ephraïm à sa droite, c’est-à-dire, à la gauche d’Israël, et Manassé à sa gauche, c’est-à-dire à la droite de son père, et il les approcha tous deux de lui.

14 But he stretching forth his right hand, put it upon the head of Ephraim the younger brother; and the left upon the head of Manasses who was the elder, changing his hands.

Israël étendant sa main droite, la posa sur la tête d’Ephraïm, le plus jeune des deux frères, et la gauche sur Manassé, qui était l’aîné, changeant ses mains de place.

15 And Jacob blessed the sons of Joseph, and said: God, in whose sight my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, God that feedeth me from my youth until this day;

Et Jacob bénit les fils de Joseph, et il dit: Que le Dieu en présence duquel ont marché mes pères Abraham et Isaac, le Dieu qui me nourrit depuis mon enfance jusqu’au présent jour;

16 The angel that delivereth me from all evils, bless these boys: and let my name be called upon them, and the names of my fathers Abraham, and Isaac, and may they grow into a multitude upon the earth.

Que l’ange qui m’a délivré de tous les maux, bénisse ces enfants; que mon nom soit invoqué sur eux, et les noms aussi de mes pères Abraham et Isaac, et qu’ils croissent en multitude sur la terre.

17 And Joseph seeing that his father had put his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, was much displeased: and taking his father’s hand he tried to lift it from Ephraim’s head, and to remove it to the head of Manasses.

Mais Joseph, voyant que son père avait posé la main droite sur la tête d’Ephraïm, en eut une grande peine, et, prenant la main de son père, il tâcha de la lever de dessus la tête d’Ephraïm et de la transporter sur la tête de Manassé.

18 And he said to his father: It should not be so, my father: for this is the firstborn, put thy right hand upon his head.

Et il dit à son père: Il ne convient pas de faire ainsi, mon père: puisque celui-ci est l’aîné, mettez votre main droite sur sa tête.

19 But he refusing, said: I know, my son, I know: and this also shall become peoples, and shall be multiplied: but this younger brother shall be greater than he: and his seed shall grow into nations.

Mais Jacob, refusant, dit: Je le sais, mon fils, je le sais: celui-ci sera aussi chef de peuples, et il se multipliera: mais son frère plus jeune, sera plus grand que lui, et sa postérité formera un grand nombre de nations.

20 And he blessed them at that time, saying: In thee shall Israel be blessed, and it shall be said: God do to thee as to Ephraim, and as to Manasses. And he set Ephraim before Manasses.

Il les bénit donc en ce moment-là, disant: En toi sera béni Israël, et l’on dira: Dieu te fasse comme à Ephraïm et Manassé. Ainsi il mit Ephraïm devant Manassé.

21 And he said to Joseph his son: Behold I die, and God will be with you, and will bring you back into the land of your fathers.

Et il dit à Joseph son fils: Voici que moi je meurs, mais Dieu sera avec vous, et il vous ramènera dans le pays de vos pères.

22 I give thee a portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorrhite with my sword and bow.

Je te donne de plus qu’à tes frères une part que j’ai enlevée à l’Amorrhéen avec mon glaive et mon arc.
