Genesis 42
1 And Jacob hearing that food was sold in Egypt, said to his sons: Why are ye careless?
Y Jacob, oyendo que había trigo en Egipto, dijo a sus hijos: ¿Por qué se miran unos a otros?
2 I have heard that wheat is sold in Egypt: go ye down, and buy us necessaries, that we may live, and not be consumed with want.
Y él dijo: He tenido noticias de que hay grano en Egipto; desciende allí y compra grano para nosotros, para que la vida y no la muerte sean nuestras.
3 So the ten brethren of Joseph went down, to buy corn in Egypt:
Entonces los diez hermanos de José bajaron a comprar grano de Egipto.
4 Whilst Benjamin was kept at home by Jacob, who said to his brethren: Lest perhaps he take any harm in the journey.
Pero Jacob no envió a Benjamín, el hermano de José, con ellos, por temor, como él dijo, que algún mal pudiera venir a él.
5 And they entered into the land of Egypt with others that went to buy. For the famine was in the land of Chanaan.
Y vinieron los hijos de Israel con todos los demás para comprar el grano; porque les faltaba mucho alimento en la tierra de Canaán.
6 And Joseph was governor in the land of Egypt, and corn was sold by his direction to the people. And when his brethren had bowed down to him,
Y José era señor de toda la tierra, y fue él quien vendía el grano entre toda la gente de la tierra; y los hermanos de José vinieron delante de él y se postraron sobre sus rostros a la tierra.
7 And he knew them, he spoke as it were to strangers somewhat roughly, asking them: Whence came you? They answered: From the land of Chanaan, to buy necessaries of life.
Y cuando José vio a sus hermanos, le quedó claro quiénes eran, pero él se hizo extraño a ellos, y hablando bruscamente con ellos, dijo: ¿De dónde vienes? Y dijeron: De la tierra de Canaán, para comprar comida.
8 And though he knew his brethren, he was not known by them.
Ahora bien, aunque José vio que estos eran sus hermanos, ellos no tenían idea de quién era él.
9 And remembering the dreams, which formerly he had dreamed, he said to them: You are spies. You are come to view the weaker parts of the land.
Entonces el recuerdo de sus sueños acerca de ellos regresó a José, y él les dijo: Has venido en secreto para ver cuán pobre es la tierra.
10 But they said: It is not so, my lord, but thy servants are come to buy food.
Y ellos le respondieron: No es así, señor mío; tus siervos vinieron con dinero para comer.
11 We are all the sons of one man: we are come as peaceable men, neither do thy servants go about any evil.
Todos somos hijos de un hombre, somos hombres honrados; no hemos venido con ningún propósito secreto.
12 And he answered them: It is otherwise: you are come to consider the unfenced parts of this land.
Y él les dijo: No, pero han venido para ver cuán pobre es la tierra.
13 But they said: We thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Chanaan: the youngest is with our father, the other is not living.
Entonces dijeron: Tus siervos somos doce hermanos, hijos de un varón en la tierra de Canaán; el más joven de nosotros está ahora con nuestro padre, y uno está muerto.
14 He saith: This is it that I said: You are spies.
Y dijo José: Es como dije; has venido con algún propósito secreto;
15 I shall now presently try what you are: by the health of Pharao you shall not depart hence, until your youngest brother come.
Pero de esta manera serás puesto a prueba: por la vida de Faraón, no te irás de este lugar hasta que tu hermano menor venga aquí.
16 Send one of you to fetch him: and you shall be in prison, till what you have said be proved, whether it be true or false: or else by the health of Pharao you are spies.
Envía uno de ustedes para conseguir a tu hermano, y el resto de ti se mantendrá en la cárcel, para que tus palabras puedan ser probadas para ver si estas diciendo la verdad; si no, por la vida de Faraón, tu propósito es ciertamente secreto.
17 So he put them in prison three days.
Y los puso en la cárcel por tres días.
18 And the third day he brought them out of prison, and said: Do as I have said, and you shall live: for I fear God.
Y al tercer día José les dijo: Hagan esto si quisieran conservar sus vidas; porque yo soy un hombre temeroso de Dios.
19 If you be peaceable men, let one of your brethren be bound in prison: and go ye your ways and carry the corn that you have bought, unto your houses.
Si son hombres honrados, que uno de ustedes se quede en la cárcel, mientras van y llevan grano para las necesidades de sus familias;
20 And bring your youngest brother to me, that I may find your words to be true, and you may not die. They did as he had said.
Y vuelvan a mí con tu hermano menor, para que tus palabras sean confirmadas, y no morirán. Esto es lo que deben de hacer.
21 And they talked one to another: We deserve to suffer these things, because we have sinned against our brother, seeing the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear: therefore is this affliction come upon us.
Y se dijeron el uno al otro: En verdad, le hicimos mal a nuestro hermano, porque vimos su dolor de ánimo, y no escuchamos sus oraciones; es por eso que este problema nos ha llegado.
22 And Ruben one of them, said: Did not I say to you: Do not sin against the boy: and you would not hear me? Behold his blood is required.
Y Rubén les dijo: ¿No les dije yo: No hagan mal al niño? pero no prestaste atención; así que ahora, el castigo vino sobre nosotros por su sangre.
23 And they knew not that Joseph understood, because he spoke to them by an interpreter.
No estaban conscientes de que el sentido de sus palabras era claro para José, porque les había estado hablando a través de alguien que tenía conocimiento de su idioma.
24 And he turned himself away a little while, and wept: and returning he spoke to them.
Y apartándose de ellos, fue vencido por él llanto; Luego siguió hablando con ellos nuevamente y tomó a Simeón y le puso cadenas delante de ellos.
25 And taking Simeon, and binding him in their presence, he commanded his servants to fill their sacks with wheat, and to put every man’s money again in their sacks, and to give them besides provisions for the way: and they did so.
Entonces José ordenó que sus bolsas se llenarán de grano, y que el dinero de cada uno se volviera a poner en su bolsa, y que se les dieran alimentos para el viaje; y así se hizo.
26 But they having loaded their asses with the corn, went their way.
Entonces pusieron las alforjas en sus asnos y se fueron.
27 And one of them opening his sack, to give his beast provender in the inn, saw the money in the sack’s mouth;
Ahora, en el lugar de descanso de la noche, uno de ellos, abriendo su bolsa para dar algo de comer a su asno, vio su dinero en la boca de la bolsa.
28 And said to his brethren: My money is given me again, behold it is in the sack. And they were astonished, and troubled, and said to one another: What is this that God hath done unto us?
Y dijo a sus hermanos: Mi dinero me ha sido devuelto; está en mi bolsa; Entonces sus corazones se llenaron de temor, y volviéndose el uno al otro, dijeron: ¿Qué es esto que Dios nos ha hecho?
29 And they came to Jacob their father in the land of Chanaan, and they told him all things that had befallen them, saying:
Y cuando llegaron a Jacob su padre, en la tierra de Canaán, le dieron cuenta de todas sus experiencias, diciendo:
30 The lord of the land spoke roughly to us, and took us to be spies of the country.
El hombre que es el gobernante del país fue duro con nosotros y nos puso en prisión, diciendo que habíamos venido con un mal propósito secreto.
31 And we answered him: We are peaceable men, and we mean no plot.
Y le dijimos: Somos hombres honrados, no tenemos malos designios;
32 We are twelve brethren born of one father: one is not living, the youngest is with our father in the land of Chanaan.
Somos doce hermanos, hijos de nuestro padre; uno está muerto, y el más joven está ahora con nuestro padre en la tierra de Canaán.
33 And he said to us: Hereby shall I know that you are peaceable men: Leave one of your brethren with me, and take ye necessary provision for your houses, and go your ways.
Y el príncipe de la tierra dijo: De esta manera puedo estar seguro de que son hombres honrados; deje que uno de ustedes se quede aquí conmigo, mientras va y lleva grano para las necesidades de sus familias;
34 And bring your youngest brother to me, that I may know you are not spies: and you may receive this man again, that is kept in prison: and afterwards may have leave to buy what you will.
Y regresa a mí con tu hermano menor; entonces estaré seguro de que son hombres honrados, y te devolveré a tu hermano y los dejaré comerciar en la tierra.
35 When they had told this, they poured out their corn and every man found his money tied in the mouth of his sack: and all being astonished together,
Y cuando tomaron el grano de sus bolsas, se vio que el paquete de dinero de cada uno estaba en su bolsa; y cuando ellos y su padre vieron el dinero, estaban llenos de miedo.
36 Their father Jacob said: You have made me to be without children: Joseph is not living, Simeon is kept in bonds, and Benjamin you will take away: all these evils are fallen upon me.
Y Jacob su padre les dijo: Me has quitado de encima a mis hijos; José se ha ido, y Simeón se ha ido, y ahora te llevarás a Benjamín; todas estas cosas me han venido contra mí.
37 And Ruben answered him: Kill my two sons if I bring him not again to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will restore him to thee.
Y Rubén dijo: Muera mis dos hijos si no vuelvo a ti con él; déjalo estar a mi cuidado y yo te lo devolveré sano y salvo.
38 But he said: My son shall not go down with you: his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if any mischief befall him in the land to which you go, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to hell. (Sheol h7585)
Y dijo: No dejaré a mi hijo descender contigo; porque su hermano está muerto y él es todo lo que tengo: si el mal lo alcanza en el viaje, entonces a través de ti mi cabeza gris descenderá al sepulcro con tristeza. (Sheol h7585)
