Genesis 27
1 Now Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, and he could not see: and he called Esau, his elder son, and said to him: My son? And he answered: Here I am.
Or Isaac devint vieux et ses yeux s’obscurcirent, et il ne pouvait plus voir: il appela Esaü, son fils aîné, et lui dit: Mon fils. Celui-ci répondit: Me voici.
2 And his father said to him: Thou seest that I am old, and know not the day of my death.
Et son père: Tu vois, lui dit-il, que je suis devenu vieux et que j’ignore le jour de ma mort.
3 Take thy arms, thy quiver, and bow, and go abroad: and when thou hast taken some thing by hunting,
Prends tes armes, ton carquois et ton arc, et sors dehors; et quand à la chasse tu auras pris quelque chose,
4 Make me savoury meat thereof, as thou knowest I like, and bring it, that I may eat: and my soul may bless thee before I die.
Fais-m’en un mets comme tu sais que je les veux, et apporte-le-moi, afin que je le mange, et que mon âme te bénisse avant que je meure.
5 And when Rebecca had heard this, and he was gone into the field to fulfill his father’s commandment,
Lorsque Rébecca eut entendu cela, et qu’Esaü fut allé dans les champs pour remplir les ordres de son père,
6 She said to her son Jacob: I heard thy father talking with Esau thy brother, and saying to him:
Elle dit à son fils Jacob: J’ai ouï ton père parlant à Esaü ton frère, et lui disant:
7 Bring me of thy hunting, and make me meats that I may eat, and bless thee in the sight of the Lord, before I die.
Apporte-moi de ta chasse et fais un mets, afin que je mange, et que je te bénisse devant le Seigneur avant que je meure.
8 Now, therefore, my son, follow my counsel:
Maintenant donc, mon fils, acquiesce à mon conseil,
9 And go thy way to the flock, bring me two kids of the best, that I may make of them meat for thy father, such as he gladly eateth:
Et courant au troupeau, apporte-moi deux des meilleurs chevreaux, afin que j’en fasse à ton père un de ces mets qu’il mange avec plaisir;
10 Which when thou hast brought in, and he hath eaten, he may bless thee before he die.
Et que, quand tu l’auras présenté, et qu’il en aura mangé, il te bénisse avant qu’il meure.
11 And he answered her: Thou knowest that Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am smooth.
Celui-ci lui répondit: Vous savez qu’Esaü mon frère est un homme velu, et moi, je ne le suis pas:
12 If my father shall feel me, and perceive it, I fear lest he will think I would have mocked him, and I shall bring upon me a curse instead of a blessing.
Si mon père me touche et me reconnaît, je crains qu’il ne pense que j’ai voulu me jouer de lui, et que je n’attire sur moi une malédiction au lieu d’une bénédiction.
13 And his mother said to him: Upon me be this curse, my son: only hear thou my voice, and go, fetch me the things which I have said.
Alors sa mère: Sur moi soit, lui dit-elle, cette malédiction, ô mon fils: seulement écoute ma voix; va, et apporte ce que j’ai dit.
14 He went, and brought, and gave them to his mother. She dressed meats, such as she knew his father liked.
Il alla, l’apporta et le donna à sa mère. Celle-ci prépara un mets, comme elle savait que son père les voulait.
15 And she put on him very good garments of Esau, which she had at home with her:
Puis elle le revêtit des plus précieux vêtements d’Esaü qu’elle avait auprès d’elle dans la maison;
16 And the little skins of the kids she put about his hands, and covered the bare of his neck.
Et elle lui mit la peau des chevreaux autour des mains, et lui en couvrit la partie nue du cou.
17 And she gave him the savoury meat, and delivered him bread that she had baked.
Elle lui donna ensuite le mets, et lui remit les pains qu’elle avait fait cuire.
18 Which when he had carried in, he said: My father? But he answered: I hear. Who art thou, my son?
Les ayant apportés, il dit à Isaac: Mon père. Et celui-ci répondit: J’entends. Qui es-tu, mon fils?
19 And Jacob said: I am Esau thy firstborn: I have done as thou didst command me: arise, sit, and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.
Et Jacob reprit: Je suis votre premier-né Esaü: j’ai fait comme vous m’avez commandé; levez-vous, asseyez-vous et mangez de ma chasse, afin que votre âme me bénisse.
20 And Isaac said to his son: How couldst thou find it so quickly, my son? He answered: It was the will of God, that what I sought came quickly in my way.
Et de nouveau Isaac à son fils: Comment, dit-il, as-tu pu en trouver si tôt, mon fils? Il répondit: La volonté de Dieu a été que ce que je cherchais, est venu soudain au-devant de moi.
21 And Isaac said: Come hither, that I may feel thee, my son, and may prove whether thou be my son Esau, or not.
Isaac dit encore: Approche d’ici, que je te touche, mon fils, et que je reconnaisse si tu es mon fils Esaü, ou non.
22 He came near to his father, and when he had felt him, Isaac said: The voice indeed is the voice of Jacob; but the hands are the hands of Esau.
Celui-ci s’approcha de son père. Or, l’ayant touché, Isaac dit: La voix est certainement la voix de Jacob; mais les mains sont les mains d’Esaü.
23 And he knew him not, because his hairy hands made him like to the elder. Then blessing him,
Et il ne le reconnut point, parce que ses mains velues reproduisaient celles de son aîné. C’est pourquoi, le bénissant,
24 He said: Art thou my son Esau? He answered: I am.
Il dit: Toi, tu es mon fils Esaü? Il répondit: Je le suis.
25 Then he said: Bring me the meats of thy hunting, my son, that my soul may bless thee. And when they were brought, and he had eaten, he offered him wine also, which after he had drunk,
Alors Isaac: Apporte-moi, dit-il, le mets de ta chasse, ô mon fils, afin que mon âme te bénisse. Lorsqu’il eut mangé le mets présenté, Jacob lui présenta aussi du vin; l’ayant bu,
26 He said to him: Come near me, and give me a kiss, my son.
Il lui dit: Approche-toi de moi, et donne-moi un baiser, mon fils.
27 He came near, and kissed him. And immediately as he smelled the fragrant smell of his garments, blessing him, he said: Behold the smell of my son is as the smell of a plentiful field, which the Lord hath blessed.
Il s’approcha, et il le baisa. Et dès qu’Isaac sentit la bonne odeur de ses vêtements, le bénissant, il dit: Voici que l’odeur qui s’exhale de mon fils est comme l’odeur d’un champ plein qu’a béni le Seigneur.
28 God give thee the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, abundance of corn and wine.
Que Dieu te donne, de la rosée du ciel et de la graisse de la terre, une abondance de blé et de vin.
29 And let peoples serve thee, and tribes worship thee: be thou lord of thy brethren, and let thy mother’s children bow down before thee. Cursed be he that curseth thee: and let him that blesseth thee be filled with blessings.
Et que les peuples te servent, et que les tribus se prosternent devant toi: sois le seigneur de tes frères, et que les fils de ta mère se courbent devant toi: que celui qui te maudira, soit lui-même maudit; et que celui qui te bénira, soit rempli de bénédictions.
30 Isaac had scarce ended his words, when Jacob being now gone out abroad, Esau came,
À peine Isaac avait achevé ces mots, et à peine Jacob était sorti dehors, qu’Esaü arriva,
31 And brought in to his father meats made of what he had taken in hunting, saying: Arise, my father, and eat of thy son’s venison; that thy soul may bless me.
Et présenta à son père le mets qu’il avait apprêté de sa chasse, disant: Levez-vous, mon père, et mangez de la chasse de votre fils, afin que votre âme me bénisse.
32 And Isaac said to him: Why! who art thou? He answered: I am thy firstborn son Esau.
Et Isaac lui demanda: Qui es-tu donc? Il répondit: Je suis votre fils premier-né Esaü.
33 Isaac was struck with fear, and astonished exceedingly: and wondering beyond what can be believed, said Who is he then that even now brought me venison that he had taken, and I ate of all before thou camest? and I have blessed him, and he shall be blessed.
Et Isaac fut frappé d’une grande stupeur; et surpris au delà de ce que l’on peut croire, il dit: Qui est donc celui qui m’a déjà apporté ce qu’il avait pris à la chasse, et que j’ai mangé, avant que tu vinsses? Je l’ai béni, et il sera béni.
34 Esau having heard his father’s words, roared out with a great cry: and being in a great consternation, said: Bless me also, my father.
Esaü, les paroles de son père entendues, poussa un grand cri de fureur, et consterné, il dit: Bénissez-moi aussi, mon père.
35 And he said: Thy brother came deceitfully and got thy blessing.
Il répondit: Ton propre frère est venu frauduleusement, et il t’a enlevé ta bénédiction.
36 But he said again: Rightly is his name called Jacob; for he hath supplanted me lo this second time: my first birthright he took away before, and now this second time he hath stolen away my blessing. And again he said to his father: Hast thou not reserved me also a blessing?
Mais Esaü repartit: C’est justement qu’il a été appelé du nom de Jacob; car il m’a supplanté déjà une autre fois: il m’a enlevé auparavant mon droit d’aînesse, et maintenant il m’a surpris encore ma bénédiction. Et de nouveau: N’avez-vous pas, dit-il a son père, réservé aussi pour moi une bénédiction?
37 Isaac answered: I have appointed him thy lord, and have made all his brethren his servants: I have established him with corn and wine, and after this, what shall I do more for thee, my son?
Isaac répondit: Je l’ai établi ton seigneur, j’ai soumis tous ses frères à sa domination, et je l’ai enrichi de blé et de vin; mais pour toi, mon fils, après cela, que puis-je faire?
38 And Esau said to him: Hast thou only one blessing, father? I beseech thee bless me also. And when he wept with a loud cry,
Alors Esaü: Est-ce, lui dit-il, une seule bénédiction que vous avez, mon père? Je vous conjure de me bénir aussi. Et comme il pleurait en jetant de grands cris,
39 Isaac being moved, said to him: In the fat of the earth, and in the dew of heaven from above,
Isaac ému lui dit: C’est dans la graisse de la terre et dans la rosée du ciel d’en haut,
40 Shall thy blessing be. Thou shalt live by the sword and shalt serve thy brother: and the time shall come, when thou shalt shake off and loose his yoke from thy neck.
Que sera ta bénédiction. Tu vivras sur ton glaive, mais tu serviras ton frère; et le temps viendra où tu secoueras et délieras son joug de ton cou.
41 Esau therefore always hated Jacob for the blessing wherewith his father had blessed him: and he said in his heart: The days will come of the mourning of my father, and I will kill my brother Jacob.
Esaü haïssait donc toujours Jacob, pour la bénédiction dont l’avait béni son père; et il dit en son cœur: Viendront les jours du deuil de mon père, et je tuerai Jacob mon frère.
42 These things were told to Rebecca: and she sent and called Jacob her son, and said to him: Behold Esau thy brother threateneth to kill thee.
Cela fut rapporté à Rébecca, qui envoyant et appelant Jacob son fils, lui dit: Voilà qu’Esaü ton frère menace de te tuer.
43 Now therefore, my son, hear my voice: arise and flee to Laban my brother to Haran:
Maintenant donc, mon fils, écoute ma voix, lève-toi et fuis chez Laban mon frère, à Haran:
44 And thou shalt dwell with him a few days, till the wrath of thy brother be assuaged,
Tu demeureras avec lui quelques jours, jusqu’à ce que s’apaise la fureur de ton frère,
45 And his indignation cease, and he forget the things thou hast done to him: afterwards I will send, and bring thee from thence hither. Why shall I be deprived of both my sons in one day?
Que cesse son indignation, et qu’il oublie ce que tu as fait contre lui; après cela j’enverrai, et je te ramènerai de là ici: pourquoi serais-je privée de mes deux fils en un seul jour?
46 And Rebecca said to Isaac: I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the stock of this land, I choose not to live.
Rébecca dit encore à Isaac: Je suis lasse de ma vie, à cause des filles de Heth: si Jacob prend une femme originaire de ce pays, je ne veux plus vivre.
