Genesis 20

1 Abraham removed from thence to the south country, and dwelt between Cades and Sur, and sojourned in Gerara.

Et Abraham se transporta de là dans la région du Midi, et se fixa entre Kadès et Sur, et fit un séjour à Gérar.

2 And he said of Sara his wife: She is my sister. So Abimelech the king of Gerara sent, and took her.

Et Abraham disait de Sarah, sa femme: C'est ma sœur. Alors Abimélech, roi de Gérar, envoya enlever Sarah.

3 And God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and he said to him: Lo thou shalt die for the woman thou hast taken: for she hath a husband.

Mais Dieu descendit vers Abimélech dans un songe de la nuit, et lui dit: Voici, tu vas mourir à cause de la femme que tu as enlevée et qui est mariée à un mari.

4 Now Abimelech had not touched her, and he said: Lord, wilt thou slay a nation, that is ignorant and just?

Cependant Abimélech ne s'était point approché d'elle. Et il dit: Seigneur, veux-tu faire périr un peuple, même innocent?

5 Did not he say to me: She is my sister: and she say, He is my brother? in the simplicity of my heart, and cleanness of my hands have I done this.

Ne m'a-t-il pas dit: C'est ma sœur, et elle, elle-même a dit: Il est mon frère? C'est dans l'innocence de mon cœur et la pureté de mes mains que je l'ai fait.

6 And God said to him: And I know that thou didst it with a sincere heart: and therefore I withheld thee from sinning against me, and I suffered thee not to touch her.

Et Dieu lui dit en songe: Je sais aussi que tu l'as fait dans l'innocence de ton cœur, et aussi t'ai-je empoché de pécher contre moi; c'est pourquoi je n'ai pas permis que tu la touchasses.

7 Now therefore restore the man his wife, for he is a prophet: and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: but if thou wilt not restore her, know that thou shalt surely die, thou and all that are thine.

Maintenant donc rends la femme à son mari, car il est prophète et il intercédera pour toi, afin que tu vives; mais si tu ne la rends pas, sache que tu mourras, toi et tout ce qui t'appartient.

8 And Abimelech forthwith rising up in the night, called all his servants: and spoke all these words in their hearing, and all the men were exceedingly afraid.

Alors Abimélech se leva le matin, et manda tous ses serviteurs, et redit toutes ces choses à leurs oreilles, et ces hommes furent très effrayés.

9 And Abimelech called also for Abraham, and said to him: What hast thou done to us? what have we offended thee in, that thou hast brought upon me and upon my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done to us what thou oughtest not to do.

Et Abimélech fit appeler a Abraham et lui dit: Qu'est-ce que tu nous as fait, et en quoi ai-je manqué à ton égard que tu aies attiré sur moi et sur mon royaume une si grande culpabilité? Tu t'es porté envers moi à des actions qu'on ne fait pas.

10 And again he expostulated with him, and said, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this?

Et Abimélech dit à Abraham: Qu'avais-tu en vue pour en agir ainsi avec moi?

11 Abraham answered: I thought with myself, saying: Perhaps there is not the fear of God in this place: and they will kill me for the sake of my wife:

Et Abraham dit: C'est que je me disais: assurément il n'y a aucune crainte de Dieu dans ce lieu, et ils me tueront à cause de ma femme.

12 Howbeit, otherwise also she is truly my sister, the daughter of my father, and not the daughter of my mother, and I took her to wife.

Aussi bien elle est vraiment ma sœur, fille de mon père, seulement n'est-elle pas fille de ma mère, et elle est devenue ma femme.

13 And after God brought me out of my father’s house, I said to her: Thou shalt do me this kindness: In every place, to which we shall come, thou shalt say that I am thy brother.

Et lorsque Dieu me fit quitter, pour voyager, la maison de mon père, je lui dis: Fais-moi cette grâce: dans quelque lieu que nous allions, dis de moi: C'est mon frère.

14 And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and servants and handmaids, and gave to Abraham: and restored to him Sara, his wife.

Alors Abimélech prit des brebis et des bœufs et des serviteurs et des servantes, et en fit un don à Abraham et lui rendit Sarah, sa femme.

15 And said: The land is before you, dwell wheresoever it shall please thee.

Et Abimélech dit: Tu as tout mon pays devant toi; établis-toi où il le plaira.

16 And to Sara he said: Behold I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: this shall serve thee for a covering of thy eyes to all that are with thee, and whithersoever thou shalt go: and remember thou wast taken.

Et à Sarah il dit: Voici, j'ai donné mille sicles d'argent à ton frère: eh bien! que ce soit une réparation auprès de tous tes entours, et auprès de tous le voilà justifiée.

17 And when Abraham prayed, God healed Abimelech and his wife, and his handmaids, and they bore children:

Alors Abraham intercéda auprès de Dieu, et Dieu guérit Abimélech et sa femme et ses servantes, et elles purent enfanter.

18 For the Lord had closed up every womb of the house of Abimelech on account of Sara, Abraham’s wife.

Car l'Éternel avait frappé de stérilité toutes les femmes de la maison d'Abimélech, à cause de Sarah, femme d'Abraham.
