Exodus 1

1 These are the names of the children of Israel, that went into Egypt with Jacob: they went in, every man with his household:

யாக்கோபுடனும் அவனுடைய குடும்பங்களுடனும் எகிப்திற்குப்போன இஸ்ரயேலுடைய மகன்களின் பெயர்களாவன:

2 Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Juda,

ரூபன், சிமியோன், லேவி, யூதா,

3 Issachar, Zabulon, and Benjamin,

இசக்கார், செபுலோன், பென்யமீன்,

4 Dan, and Nephtali, Gad and Aser.

தாண், நப்தலி, காத், ஆசேர்.

5 And all the souls that came out of Jacob’s thigh, were seventy: but Joseph was in Egypt.

யாக்கோபின் சந்ததிகள் மொத்தம் எழுபதுபேர். யோசேப்பு ஏற்கெனவே எகிப்தில் இருந்தான்.

6 After he was dead, and all his brethren, and all that generation,

இப்பொழுது யோசேப்பும், அவனுடைய சகோதரர்கள் எல்லோரும், அந்த தலைமுறையினர் யாவரும் இறந்துபோனார்கள்.

7 The children of Israel increased, and sprung up into multitudes, and growing exceedingly strong they filled the land.

இஸ்ரயேல் என அழைக்கப்பட்ட, யாக்கோபின் சந்ததிகள் வளம்பெற்று, அதிகமாய்ப் பெருகினார்கள்; நாடு அவர்களால் நிரம்பும் அளவுக்கு அவர்கள் எண்ணிக்கையில் மிகவும் பெருகினார்கள்.

8 In the mean time there arose a new king over Egypt, that knew not Joseph:

பின்பு யோசேப்பைப்பற்றி அறியாத ஒரு புதிய அரசன் எகிப்தில் ஆட்சிக்கு வந்தான்.

9 And he said to his people: Behold the people of the children of Israel are numerous and stronger than we.

அவன் தன் மக்களிடம், “பாருங்கள், இஸ்ரயேலரோ நம்மைவிட எண்ணிக்கையில் அதிகமாயும், பலமுள்ளவர்களுமாய் இருக்கிறார்கள்.

10 Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply: and if any war shall rise against us, join with our enemies, and having overcome us, depart out of the land.

வாருங்கள், நாம் அவர்களுடன் விவேகமாய் நடந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும், இல்லையென்றால் அவர்கள் இன்னும் எண்ணிக்கையில் அதிகமாய்ப் பெருகிவிடுவார்கள், யுத்தம் ஒன்று உண்டானால் அவர்கள் நம் பகைவர்களோடு சேர்ந்து, நமக்கு விரோதமாகப் போரிட்டு நாட்டைவிட்டுப் போய்விடுவார்கள்” என்றான்.

11 Therefore he set over them masters of the works, to afflict them with burdens, and they built for Pharao cities of tabernacles, Phithom and Ramesses.

எனவே இஸ்ரயேலர்களைக் கட்டாய வேலைக்கு உட்படுத்தி ஒடுக்குவதற்கு, அடிமைகளை நடத்தும் அதிகாரிகளை அவர்களுக்கு மேலாக நியமித்தார்கள்; இவ்வாறு அவர்கள் பித்தோம், ராமசேஸ் என்னும் களஞ்சியப் பட்டணங்களைப் பார்வோனுக்காகக் கட்டினார்கள்.

12 But the more they oppressed them, the more they were multiplied, and increased:

ஆனால் இஸ்ரயேலர் எவ்வளவு அதிகமாய் ஒடுக்கப்பட்டார்களோ, அவ்வளவு அதிகமாய் அவர்கள் பெருகிப் பரவினார்கள்; இதனால் எகிப்தியர் இஸ்ரயேலர்களுக்குப் பயந்து,

13 And the Egyptians hated the children of Israel, and afflicted them and mocked them:

அவர்கள் இஸ்ரயேலரைக் கொடூரமாய் நடத்தி வேலை வாங்கினார்கள்.

14 And they made their life bitter with hard works in clay, and brick, and with all manner of service, wherewith they were overcharged in the works of the earth.

செங்கல்லும் சாந்தும் செய்யும் கடினமான வேலைகளினாலும், வயல்களில் செய்யும் எல்லா விதமான வேலைகளினாலும், எகிப்தியர் அவர்களுடைய வாழ்க்கையைக் கசப்பாக்கினார்கள்; இரக்கமின்றி அவர்களுடைய எல்லாக் கடின வேலைகளிலும் அவர்களைக் கொடூரமாய் நடத்தினார்கள்.

15 And the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews: of whom one was called Sephora, the other Phua,

எகிப்திய அரசன், சிப்பிராள், பூவாள் என்னும் எபிரெய மருத்துவச்சிகளிடம்,

16 Commanding them: When you shall do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery is come: if it be a man child, kill it: if a woman, keep it alive.

“எபிரெய பெண்களின் பிரசவ நேரத்தில் அவர்கள் மணையின்மேல் இருக்கையில் நீங்கள் பார்த்து, பிறக்கும் பிள்ளை ஆண் குழந்தையானால், அதைக் கொன்றுபோடுங்கள்; பெண் குழந்தையானால் அதை வாழவிடுங்கள்” என்றான்.

17 But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded, but saved the men children.

ஆனாலும் மருத்துவச்சிகளோ இறைவனுக்குப் பயந்து, எகிப்திய அரசன் தங்களுக்குச் செய்யச் சொல்லியிருந்ததைச் செய்யவில்லை; அவர்கள் ஆண்பிள்ளைகளையும் வாழவிட்டார்கள்.

18 And the king called for them and said: What is that you meant to do, that you would save the men children?

இதை அறிந்த எகிப்திய அரசன் மருத்துவச்சிகளை அழைப்பித்து, “நீங்கள் ஏன் இதைச் செய்தீர்கள்? ஆண் பிள்ளைகளை ஏன் வாழ விட்டிருக்கிறீர்கள்?” என்று கேட்டான்.

19 They answered: The Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women: for they themselves are skillful in the office of a midwife; and they are delivered before we come to them.

மருத்துவச்சிகள் பார்வோனுக்குப் பதிலளித்து, “எபிரெய பெண்கள் எகிப்திய பெண்களைப் போன்றவர்களல்ல; அவர்கள் பலமுள்ளவர்கள், அதனால் மருத்துவச்சிகள் வந்து சேருமுன்பே அவர்கள் குழந்தைகளைப் பெற்றுவிடுகிறார்கள்” என்றார்கள்.

20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied and grew exceedingly strong.

இறைவன் மருத்துவச்சிகளுக்குத் தயவு காட்டினார்; இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் பெருகி எண்ணிக்கையில் இன்னும் அதிகரித்தார்கள்.

21 And because the midwives feared God, he built them houses.

மருத்துவச்சிகள் இறைவனுக்குப் பயந்தபடியால், அவர் அவர்களுடைய சொந்தக் குடும்பங்களை விருத்தியடையச் செய்தார்.

22 Pharao therefore charged all his people, saying: Whatsoever shall be born of the male sex, ye shall cast into the river: whatsoever of the female, ye shall save alive.

பின்பு பார்வோன் தன் மக்கள் எல்லோருக்கும் கட்டளை கொடுத்து, “எபிரெயருக்குப் பிறக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண் குழந்தையையும் நீங்கள் நைல் நதியில் எறிந்துவிடவேண்டும்; ஆனால், எல்லா பெண் குழந்தைகளையும் வாழவிடுங்கள்” என்றான்.
