Exodus 10
1 And the Lord said to Moses: Go in to Pharao; for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants: that I may work these my signs in him.
Et le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Entre auprès de Pharaon; car c’est moi qui ai endurci son cœur et celui de ses serviteurs, afin que je fasse sur lui ces signes de ma puissance,
2 And thou mayest tell in the ears of thy sons, and of they grandsons, how often I have plagued the Egyptians, and wrought my signs amongst them: and you may know that I am the Lord:
Et que tu racontes aux oreilles de ton fils et de tes neveux, combien de fois j’ai brisé les Egyptiens et j’ai fait mes signes au milieu d’eux, et que vous sachiez que je suis le Seigneur.
3 Therefore Moses and Aaron went in to Pharao, and said to him: Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews: How long refusest thou to submit to me? let my people go, to sacrifice to me.
Moïse et Aaron entrèrent donc auprès de Pharaon, et lui dirent: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu des Hébreux: Jusqu’à quand ne voudras-tu pas te soumettre à moi? Laisse aller mon peuple, afin qu’il me sacrifie.
4 But if thou resist, and wilt not let them go, behold I will bring in tomorrow the locust into thy coasts:
Que si tu résistes encore, et si tu ne veux pas le laisser aller, voilà que moi, je ferai venir demain des sauterelles dans tes confins;
5 To cover the face of the earth that nothing thereof may appear, but that which the hail hath left may be eaten: for they shall feed upon all the trees that spring in the fields.
Pour qu’elles couvrent la surface de la terre; en sorte qu’il n’en paraisse rien; mais que ce qui sera resté après la grêle, soit mangé; car elles rongeront tous les arbres qui poussent dans les champs.
6 And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of thy servants, and of all the Egyptians: such a number as thy fathers have not seen, nor thy grandfathers, from the time they were first upon the earth, until this present day. And he turned himself away, and went forth from Pharao.
Et elles rempliront tes maisons, et celles de tes serviteurs et de tous les Egyptiens; ni tes pères, ni tes aïeux n’en ont vu autant depuis qu’ils sont nés sur la terre, jusqu’au présent jour. Et il se retira, et il sortit d’avec Pharaon.
7 And Pharao’s servants said to him: How long shall we endure this scandal? let the men go to sacrifice to the Lord their God. Dost thou not see that Egypt is undone?
Mais les serviteurs de Pharaon lui dirent: Jusqu’à quand souffrirons-nous ce scandale? Laissez aller ces hommes, afin qu’ils sacrifient au Seigneur leur Dieu: ne voyez-vous pas que l’Egypte est perdue?
8 And they called back Moses and Aaron to Pharao: and he said to them: Go, sacrifice to the Lord your God: who are they that shall go?
Ils rappelèrent donc Moïse et Aaron auprès de Pharaon, qui leur dit: Allez, sacrifiez au Seigneur votre Dieu: qui sont ceux qui doivent y aller?
9 Moses said: We will go with our young and old, with our sons and daughters, with our sheep and herds: for it is the solemnity of the Lord our God.
Moïse répondit: Nous irons avec nos petits enfants et nos vieillards, avec nos fils et nos filles, avec nos brebis et notre gros bétail; car c’est une solennité du Seigneur notre Dieu.
10 And Pharao answered: So be the Lord with you, as I shall let you and your children go: who can doubt but that you intend some great evil?
Et Pharaon repartit: Que le Seigneur soit avec vous de la même manière que moi, je vous laisserai aller, vous et vos petits enfants: qui doute que vous ne formiez de très mauvais desseins?
11 It shall not be so: but go ye men only, and sacrifice to the Lord: for this yourselves also desired. And immediately they were cast out from Pharao’s presence.
Non, il n’en sera pas ainsi; mais allez, vous autres hommes seulement, et sacrifiez au Seigneur; car c’est ce que vous-mêmes avez demandé. Et aussitôt ils furent renvoyés de la présence de Pharaon.
12 And the Lord said to Moses: Stretch forth thy hand upon the land of Egypt unto the locust, that it may come upon it, and devour every herb that is left after the hail.
Mais le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Etends ta main sur la terre d’Egypte vers les sauterelles, afin qu’elles montent sur la terre, et qu’elles dévorent toute l’herbe qui est restée après la grêle.
13 And Moses stretched forth his rod upon the land of Egypt: and the Lord brought a burning wind all that day, and night: and when it was morning, the burning wind raised the locusts:
Et Moïse étendit sa verge sur la terre d’Egypte, et le Seigneur fit venir un vent brûlant, qui souffla tout ce jour-là et toute la nuit; et, le matin venu, le vent brûlant fit lever les sauterelles;
14 And they came up over the whole land of Egypt: and rested in all the coasts of the Egyptians innumerable, the like as had not been before that time, nor shall be hereafter.
Qui montèrent sur toute la terre d’Egypte; et elles s’arrêtèrent dans tous les confins des Egyptiens en nombre infini, telles qu’avant ce temps-là il n’y en avait pas eu, et qu’à l’avenir il ne doit pas y en avoir
15 And they covered the whole face of the earth, wasting all things. And the grass of the earth was devoured, and what fruits soever were on the trees, which the hail had left: and there remained not any thing that was green on the trees, or in the herbs of the earth in all Egypt.
Ainsi, elles couvrirent la surface entière de la terre, ravageant tout. Toute l’herbe de la terre fut donc dévorée, et tout ce qui se trouva de fruits sur les arbres, fruits que la grêle avait laissés; de sorte qu’il ne resta absolument rien de vert sur les arbres ni dans les herbes de la terre, dans toute l’Egypte.
16 Wherefore Pharao in haste called Moses and Aaron, and said to them: I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you.
C’est pourquoi Pharaon se hâtant appela Moïse et Aaron, et leur dit: J’ai péché contre le Seigneur votre Dieu, et contre vous.
17 But now forgive me my sin this time also, and pray to the Lord your God, that he take away from me this death.
Mais maintenant pardonnez-moi mon péché encore cette fois, et priez le Seigneur votre Dieu, afin qu’il retire de moi cette mort.
18 And Moses going forth from the presence of Pharao, prayed to the Lord.
Moïse donc, sorti de la présence de Pharaon, pria le Seigneur,
19 And he made a very strong wind to blow from the west, and it took the locusts and cast them into the Red Sea: there remained not so much as one in all the coasts of Egypt.
Qui fit souffler de l’occident un vent très violent, qui, ayant enlevé les sauterelles, les jeta dans la mer Rouge; il n’en demeura pas même une seule dans tous les confins de l’Egypte.
20 And the Lord hardened Pharao’s heart, neither did he let the children of Israel go.
Mais le Seigneur endurcit le cœur de Pharaon, et il ne laissa pas aller les enfants d’Israël.
21 And the Lord said to Moses: Stretch out they hand towards heaven: and may there be darkness upon the land of Egypt, so thick that it may be felt.
Alors le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Etends ta main vers le ciel, et qu’il y ait sur la terre d’Egypte des ténèbres si épaisses, qu’on puisse les toucher.
22 And Moses stretch forth his hand towards heaven: and there came horrible darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days.
Et Moïse étendit sa main vers le ciel, et il se forma des ténèbres horribles sur l’Egypte entière pendant trois jours.
23 No man saw his brother, nor moved himself out of the place where he was: but wheresoever the children of Israel dwelt there was light.
Personne ne vit son frère, ni ne se remua du lieu où il était: mais la lumière était partout où habitaient les enfants d’Israël.
24 And Pharao called Moses and Aaron, and said to them: Go sacrifice to the Lord: let your sheep only, and herds remain; let your children go with you.
Alors Pharaon appela Moïse et Aaron et leur dit: Allez, sacrifiez au Seigneur: que vos brebis seulement et votre gros bétail demeurent, et que vos petits enfants aillent avec vous.
25 Moses said: Thou shalt give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, to the Lord our God.
Moïse répondit: Tu nous donneras aussi des hosties et des holocaustes que nous puissions offrir au Seigneur notre Dieu.
26 All the flocks shall go with us: there shall not a hoof remain of them: for they are necessary for the service of the Lord our God: especially as we know not what must be offered, till we come to the very place.
Tous nos troupeaux iront avec nous, et il ne demeurera pas une corne de leurs pieds; c’est nécessaire pour le culte du Seigneur notre Dieu; d’autant plus que nous ignorons ce qui doit être immolé, jusqu’à ce que nous parvenions au lieu même.
27 And the Lord hardened Pharao’s heart, and he would not let them go.
Mais le Seigneur endurcit le cœur de Pharaon, et il ne voulut pas les laisser aller.
28 And Pharao said to Moses: Get thee from me, and beware thou see not my face any more: in what day soever thou shalt come in my sight, thou shalt die.
Et Pharaon dit à Moïse: Retire-toi de moi, et garde-toi de voir désormais ma face: car en quelque jour que ce soit que tu paraisses de vaut moi, tu mourras.
29 Moses answered: So shall it be as thou hast spoken, I will not see thy face any more.
Moïse répondit: Il sera fait ainsi que tu las dit, je ne verrai plus ta face.
