Esther 7
1 So the king and Aman went in, to drink with the queen.
Le roi entra donc, et Aman, pour boire avec la reine.
2 And the king said to her again the second day, after he was warm with wine: What is thy petition, Esther, that it may be granted thee? and what wilt thou have done: although thou ask the half of my kingdom, thou shalt have it.
Et le roi dit encore ce second jour, après qu’il eut été échauffé par le vin: Quelle est votre demande, Esther, afin qu’elle vous soit accordée? et que voulez-vous que l’on fasse? Quand vous me demanderiez la moitié de mon royaume, vous l’obtiendriez.
3 Then she answered: If I have found Favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please thee, give me my life for which I ask, and my people for which I request.
Esther lui répondit: Si j’ai trouvé grâce à vos yeux, ô roi, et s’il vous plaît, accordez-moi ma propre vie pour laquelle je vous prie, et mon peuple pour lequel je vous implore.
4 For we are given up, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. And would God we were sold for bondmen and bondwomen: the evil might be borne with, and I would have mourned in silence: but now we have an enemy, whose cruelty redoundeth upon the king.
Car nous avons été livrés, moi et mon peuple, pour que nous soyons foulés aux pieds, égorgés, et que nous périssions. Et plût à Dieu qu’on nous vendît comme serviteurs et servantes; ce serait un mal supportable, et, gémissant, je me tairais; mais maintenant, nous avons un ennemi dont la cruauté retombe sur le roi.
5 And king Assuerus answered and said: Who is this, and of what power, that he should do these things?
Or le roi Assuérus, répondant, dit: Qui est celui-là? et quel est son pouvoir, pour qu’il ose faire ces choses?
6 And Esther said: It is this Aman that is our adversary and most wicked enemy. Aman hearing this was forthwith astonished, not being able to bear the countenance of the king and of the queen.
Alors Esther dit: Notre ennemi et notre adversaire est ce très méchant Aman. Ce que celui-ci entendant, il resta sur le champ tout interdit, ne supportant pas les regards du roi et de la reine.
7 But the king being angry rose up, and went from the place of the banquet into the garden set with trees. Aman also rose up to entreat Esther the queen for his life, for he understood that evil was prepared for him by the king.
Or le roi, irrité, se leva, et, sortant du lieu du festin, il entra dans un lieu planté d’arbres. Aman aussi se leva, afin de prier la reine Esther pour sa vie, parce qu’il avait compris que le malheur lui était préparé par le roi.
8 And when the king came back out of the garden set with trees, and entered into the place of the banquet, he found Aman was fallen upon the bed on which Esther lay, and he said: He will force the queen also in my presence, in my own house. The word was not yet gone out of the king’s mouth, and immediately they covered his face.
Lorsqu’Assuérus fut revenu du jardin planté d’arbres et qu’il fut entré dans le lieu du festin, il trouva qu’Aman s’était jeté sur le lit où était Esther, et il dit: Même à la reine il ose faire violence, moi présent, dans ma maison? Cette parole n’était pas encore sortie de la bouche du roi, qu’on couvrit aussitôt le visage d’Aman.
9 And Harbona, one of the eunuchs that stood waiting on the king, said: Behold the gibbet which he hath prepared for Mardochai, who spoke for the king, standeth in Aman’s house, being fifty cubits high. And the king said to him: Hang him upon it.
Alors Harbona, l’un des eunuques qui étaient au service du roi, dit: Voilà que le bois qu’il avait préparé à Mardochée, qui a parlé dans l’intérêt du roi, est dans la maison d’Aman; il a de hauteur cinquante coudées. Le roi lui dit: Pendez-le à ce bois.
10 So Aman was hanged on the gibbet, which he had prepared for Mardochai: and the king’s wrath ceased.
Aman fut donc pendu à la potence qu’il avait préparée à Mardochée, et la colère du roi s’apaisa.
