Ecclesiastes 7
1 A good name is better than precious ointments: and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.
Mieux vaut une bonne réputation que les parfums précieux; et le jour de la mort que le jour de la naissance.
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to the house of feasting: for in that we are put in mind of the end of all, and the living thinketh what is to come.
Mieux vaut aller dans une maison de deuil que dans une maison de festin; car dans celle-là on est averti de la fin de tous les hommes, et le vivant pense à ce qui doit arriver.
3 Anger is better than laughter: because by the sadness of the countenance the mind of the offender is corrected.
Mieux vaut la colère que le rire, parce que par la tristesse du visage est corrigé le cœur de celui qui pèche.
4 The heart of the wise is where there is mourning, and the heart of fools where there is mirth.
Le cœur des sages est où est la tristesse; et le cœur des insensés où est la joie.
5 It is better to be rebuked by a wise man, than to be deceived by the flattery of fools.
Mieux vaut être repris par un sage que d’être trompé par les flatteries des insensés;
6 For as the crackling of thorns burning under a pot, so is the laughter of a fool: now this also is vanity.
Parce que, comme est le pétillement des épines qui brûlent sous une marmite, ainsi est le rire de l’insensé; mais cela même est vanité.
7 Oppression troubleth the wise, and shall destroy the strength of his heart.
L’oppression trouble le sage, et elle détruira la force de son cœur.
8 Better is the end of a speech than the beginning. Better is the patient man than the presumptuous.
Mieux vaut la fin d’un discours que le commencement. Mieux vaut un homme patient qu’un arrogant.
9 Be not quickly angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of a fool.
Ne sois pas prompt à te mettre en colère; parce que la colère repose dans le sein de l’insensé.
10 Say not: What thinkest thou is the cause that former times were better than they are now? for this manner of question is foolish.
Ne dis pas: Quelle est la cause, penses-tu, que les temps anciens furent meilleurs qu’ils ne sont maintenant? car insensée est une question de ce genre.
11 Wisdom with riches is more profitable, and bringeth more advantage to them that see the sun.
La sagesse est plus utile avec les richesses, et elle sert davantage à ceux qui voient le soleil.
12 For as wisdom is a defence, so money is a defence: but learning and wisdom excel in this, that they give life to him that possesseth them.
Car comme la sagesse protège, l’argent protège aussi; mais l’instruction a cela de plus, ainsi que la sagesse, qu’elles donnent la vie à leur possesseur.
13 Consider the works of God, that no man can correct whom he hath despised.
Considère les œuvres de Dieu: personne ne peut corriger celui qu’il méprise.
14 In the good day enjoy good things, and beware beforehand of the evil day: for God hath made both the one and the other, that man may not find against him any just complaint.
Au jour heureux, jouis des biens, et précautionne-toi contre le mauvais jour; car comme l’un, ainsi il a fait l’autre, sans que l’homme trouve contre lui de justes plaintes.
15 These things also I saw in the days of my vanity: A just man perisheth in his justice, and a wicked man liveth a long time in his wickedness.
J’ai encore vu ceci dans les jours de ma vanité: le juste périt dans sa justice, et l’impie vit longtemps dans sa malice.
16 Be not over just: and be not more wise than is necessary, lest thou become stupid.
Ne sois point juste à l’excès, ni plus sage qu’il n’est nécessaire, pour que tu ne deviennes pas insensible.
17 Be not overmuch wicked: and be not foolish, lest thou die before thy time.
N’agis pas en impie à l’excès; et ne sois pas insensé, afin que tu ne meures pas dans un temps qui n’est pas le tien.
18 It is good that thou shouldst hold up the just, yea and from him withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God, neglecteth nothing.
Il est bon que tu soutiennes le juste; mais même ne retire pas de celui-là ta main, parce que celui qui craint Dieu ne néglige rien.
19 Wisdom hath strengthened the wise more than ten princes of the city.
La sagesse a rendu le sage plus fort que dix princes d’une cité.
20 For there is no just man upon earth, that doth good, and sinneth not.
Car il n’est pas d’homme juste sur la terre qui fasse le bien et ne pèche point.
21 But do not apply thy heart to all words that are spoken: lest perhaps thou hear thy servant reviling thee.
Mais surtout, à toutes les paroles qui se disent, ne prête pas ton cœur; de peur que tu n’entendes ton serviteur te maudire;
22 For thy conscience knoweth that thou also hast often spoken evil of others.
Car ta conscience sait que toi-même tu as fréquemment maudit les autres.
23 I have tried all things in wisdom. I have said: I will be wise: and it departed farther from me,
J’ai tout tenté avec la sagesse. J’ai dit: Je deviendrai sage, et la sagesse s’est retirée bien loin de moi
24 Much more than it was: it is a great depth, who shall find it out?
Beaucoup plus loin qu’elle n’était, et grande est sa profondeur; qui la trouvera?
25 I have surveyed all things with my mind, to know, and consider, and seek out wisdom and reason: and to know the wickedness of the fool, and the error of the imprudent:
J’ai parcouru toutes choses avec mon esprit, afin de savoir, de considérer, et de chercher la sagesse et la raison des choses, et de connaître l’impiété de l’insensé et l’erreur des imprudents:
26 And I have found a woman more bitter than death, who is the hunter’s snare, and her heart is a net, and her hands are bands. He that pleaseth God shall escape from her: but he that is a sinner, shall be caught by her.
Et j’ai trouvé la femme plus amère que la mort; elle est un lacs de chasseur, son cœur est un filet, ses mains sont des chaînes. Celui qui plaît à Dieu lui échappera; mais celui qui est pécheur sera pris par elle.
27 Lo this have I found, said Ecclesiastes, weighing one thing after another, that I might find out the account,
Voilà ce que j’ai trouvé, dit l’Ecclésiaste, une chose et une autre, afin de trouver une raison,
28 Which yet my soul seeketh, and I have not found it. One man among a thousand I have found, a woman among them all I have not found.
Que cherche encore mon âme, et que je n’ai pas trouvée. J’ai trouvé un homme entre mille; une femme entre toutes, je ne l’ai pas trouvée.
29 Only this I have found, that God made man right, and he hath entangled himself with an infinity of questions. Who is as the wise man? and who hath known the resolution of the word?
J’ai trouvé cela seulement, que Dieu a fait l’homme droit, et que celui-ci s’est embarrassé lui-même dans des questions infinies.
