Deuteronomy 25
1 If there be a controversy between men, and they call upon the judges: they shall give the prize of justice to him whom they perceive to be just: and him whom they find to be wicked, they shall condemn of wickedness.
Wenn Männer, die einen Streit miteinander haben, vor Gericht treten, und man ihnen das Urteil gesprochen hat, indem man den Unschuldigen frei sprach und den Schuldigen verurteilte,
2 And if they see that the offender be worthy of stripes: they shall lay him down, and shall cause him to be beaten before them. According to the measure of the sin shall the measure also of the stripes be:
so soll der Richter, wenn sich herausgestellt hat, daß der Schuldige Prügelstrafe verdient, denselben hinlegen und ihm in seiner Gegenwart eine seiner Schuld entsprechende Anzahl Hiebe geben lassen.
3 Yet so, that they exceed not the number of forty: lest thy brother depart shamefully torn before thy eyes.
Vierzig Hiebe darf er ihm geben lassen, aber nicht mehr, damit dein Volksgenosse nicht in deinen Augen entehrt werde, wenn man ihm noch viele weitere Hiebe versetzt.
4 Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out thy corn on the floor.
Du sollst einem Ochsen beim Dreschen keinen Maulkorb anlegen.
5 When brethren dwell together, and one of them dieth without children, the wife of the deceased shall not marry to another: but his brother shall take her, and raise up seed for his brother:
Wenn Brüder beisammen wohnen und einer von ihnen stirbt, ohne einen Sohn zu hinterlassen, so soll die Gattin des Verstorbenen sich nicht auswärts an einen fremden Mann verheiraten; ihr Schwager soll zu ihr eingehen, daß er sie sich zur Frau nehme und ihr die Schwagerpflicht Ieiste.
6 And the first son he shall have of her he shall call by his name, that his name be not abolished out of Israel.
Der erste Sohn aber, den sie gebiert, soll seinem verstorbenen Bruder zugerechnet werden, damit dessen Name nicht in Israel erlösche.
7 But if he will not take his brother’s wife, who by law belongeth to him, the woman shall go to the gate of the city, and call upon the ancients, and say: My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up his brother’s name in Israel: and will not take me to wife.
Wenn aber der Mann keine Lust hat, seine Schwägerin zu heiraten, so soll seine Schwägerin hin zum Thore zu den Vornehmsten gehen und sprechen: Mein Schwager weigert sich, den Namen seines Bruders in Israel aufrecht zu erhalten; er will mir die Schwagerpflicht nicht leisten.
8 And they shall cause him to be sent for forthwith, and shall ask him. If he answer: I will not take her to wife:
Daraufhin sollen die Vornehmsten seiner Stadt ihn vorladen und mit ihm reden, und wenn er darauf besteht und erklärt: Ich habe keine Lust, sie zu nehmen!
9 The woman shall come to him before the ancients, and shall take off his shoe from his foot, and spit in his face, and say: So shall it be done to the man that will not build up his brother’s house:
so soll seine Schwägerin in Gegenwart der Vornehmsten an ihn herantreten, ihm den Schuh von seinem Fuße abziehen, ihm ins Angesicht spucken und anheben und sprechen: So soll es jedem ergehen, der die Familie seines Bruders nicht fortpflanzen will!
10 And his name shall be called in Israel, the house of the unshod.
Und seine Familie soll fortan in Israel Barfüßerfamilie heißen.
11 If two men have words together, and one begin to fight against the other, and the other’s wife willing to deliver her husband out of the hand of the stronger, shall put forth her hand, and take him by the secrets,
Wenn bei einem Raufhandel zweier Volksgenossen das Weib des einen herzueilt, um ihren Mann aus der Gewalt dessen, der ihn schlägt, zu befreien, und diesen mit ihrer Hand bei den Schamteilen packt,
12 Thou shalt cut off her hand, neither shalt thou be moved with any pity in her regard.
so sollst du ihr die Hand abhauen ohne jedes Erbarmen.
13 Thou shalt not have divers weights in thy bag, a greater and a less:
Du sollst in deiner Tasche nicht zweierlei Gewichtsteine haben, einen größeren und einen kleineren.
14 Neither shall there be in thy house a greater bushel and a less.
Du sollst in deinem Hause nicht zweierlei Hohlmaße haben, ein größeres Epha und ein kleineres.
15 Thou shalt have a just and a true weight, and thy bushel shall be equal and true: that thou mayest live a long time upon the land which the Lord thy God shall give thee.
Volles und richtiges Gewicht sollst du haben, volles und richtiges Hohlmaß sollst du haben, damit du lange lebest in dem Lande, das dir Jahwe, dein Gott, verleiht.
16 For the Lord thy God abhorreth him that doth these things, and he hateth all injustice.
Denn ein Greuel ist Jahwe, deinem Gott, ein jeder, der solches thut, jeder, der ein Unrecht begeht.
17 Remember what Amalec did to thee in the way when thou camest out of Egypt:
Gedenke daran, was dir die Amalekiter angethan haben unterwegs, als ihr aus Ägypten wegzogt,
18 How he met thee: and slew the hindmost of the army, who sat down, being weary, when thou wast spent with hunger and labour, and he feared not God.
wie sie dich ohne irgend welche Furcht vor Gott, als du erschöpft und müde warst, unterwegs überfielen und alle deine ermatteten Nachzügler von dir abschnitten.
19 Therefore when the Lord thy God shall give thee rest, and shall have subdued all the nations round about in the land which he hath promised thee: thou shalt blot out his name from under heaven. See thou forget it not.
Darum sollst du, wenn dir Jahwe, dein Gott, vor allen deinen Feinden ringsum Ruhe verschafft hat in dem Lande, welches dir Jahwe, dein Gott, zum Erbbesitze verleiht, die Amalekiter bis auf den Namen von der Erde vertilgen; vergiß es nicht!
