Acts 23

1 And Paul looking upon the council, said: Men, brethren, I have conversed with all good conscience before God until this present day.

Paul, regardant fixement le conseil, dit: Hommes, mes frères, jusqu’à ce jour je me suis conduit devant Dieu en toute bonne conscience.

2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to strike him on the mouth.

Mais le prince des prêtres, Ananie, ordonna à ceux qui étaient près de lui de le frapper au visage.

3 Then Paul said to him: God shall strike thee, thou whited wall. For sittest thou to judge me according to the law, and contrary to the law commandest me to be struck?

Alors Paul lui dit: Dieu te frappera, muraille blanchie. Tu sièges pour me juger selon la loi, et, contre la loi, tu ordonnes de me frapper.

4 And they that stood by said: Dost thou revile the high priest of God?

Ceux qui étaient présents dirent: Tu maudis le grand prêtre de Dieu?

5 And Paul said: I knew not, brethren, that he is the high priest. For it is written: Thou shalt not speak evil of the prince of thy people.

Et Paul répondit: J’ignorais, mes frères, que ce fût le prince des prêtres, car il est écrit: Tu ne maudiras point le prince de ton peuple.

6 And Paul knowing that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, cried out in the council: Men, brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees: concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

Or Paul sachant qu’une partie étaient sadducéens, et l’autre pharisiens, s’écria dans le conseil: Hommes, mes frères, je suis pharisien, fils de pharisien; c’est à cause de l’espérance et de la résurrection des morts que je suis en jugement.

7 And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees; and the multitude was divided.

Lorsqu’il eut dit cela, il s’éleva une discussion entre les pharisiens et les saducéens, et l’assemblée fut divisée.

8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

Car les sadducéens disent qu’il n’y a ni résurrection, ni ange, ni esprit; les pharisiens, au contraire, confessent l’un et l’autre.

9 And there arose a great cry. And some of the Pharisees rising up, strove, saying: We find no evil in this man. What if a spirit hath spoken to him, or an angel?

Il s’éleva donc une grande clameur. Quelques-uns des pharisiens se levant, contestaient, disant: Nous ne trouvons rien de mal dans cet homme; et si un esprit ou un ange lui a parlé?

10 And when there arose a great dissension, the tribune fearing lest Paul should be pulled in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.

Et comme le tumulte s’accroissait, le tribun craignant que Paul ne fût mis en pièces par ces gens-là, commanda aux soldats de descendre, de l’enlever d’au milieu d’eux, et de le conduire dans le camp.

11 And the night following the Lord standing by him, said: Be constant; for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

Mais, la nuit suivante, le Seigneur se présentant à lui, dit: Aie bon courage; car, comme tu m’as rendu témoignage à Jérusalem, il faut aussi que tu me rendes témoignage à Rome.

12 And when day was come, some of the Jews gathered together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying, that they would neither eat, nor drink, till they killed Paul.

Le jour étant venu, quelques-uns d’entre les Juifs s’assemblèrent, et se firent eux-mêmes anathème, disant qu’ils ne boiraient ni ne mangeraient qu’ils n’eussent tu« Paul.

13 And they were more than forty men that had made this conspiracy.

Ils étaient plus de quarante hommes qui avaient fait cette conjuration;

14 Who came to the chief priests and the ancients, and said: We have bound ourselves under a great curse that we will eat nothing till we have slain Paul.

Ils se rendirent auprès des princes des prêtres et des anciens, et dirent: Nous avons fait le vœu, en appelant sur nous l’anathème, de ne goûter de rien, que nous n’ayons tué Paul.

15 Now therefore do you with the council signify to the tribune, that he bring him forth to you, as if you meant to know something more certain touching him. And we, before he come near, are ready to kill him.

Maintenant donc, vous avec le conseil, faites avertir le tribun de l’amener devant vous, comme pour savoir quelque chose de plus certain sur lui. Nous, de notre côté, nous sommes prêts à le tuer avant qu’il arrive.

16 Which when Paul’s sister’s son had heard, of their lying in wait, he came and entered into the castle and told Paul.

Mais ayant ouï parler de cette trahison, le fils de la sœur de Paul vint, entra dans le camp, et avertit Paul.

17 And Paul, calling to him one of the centurions, said: Bring this young man to the tribune, for he hath some thing to tell him.

Alors Paul appelant à lui un des centurions, dit: Conduisez ce jeune homme au tribun, car il a quelque chose à lui dire.

18 And he taking him, brought him to the tribune, and said: Paul, the prisoner, desired me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath some thing to say to thee.

Et le centurion le prenant avec lui, le conduisit au tribun, et dit: Le prisonnier Paul m’a prié de vous amener ce jeune homme qui a quelque chose à vous dire.

19 And the tribune taking him by the hand, went aside with him privately, and asked him: What is it that thou hast to tell me?

Aussitôt le tribun, le prenant par la main, se retira à part avec lui, et lui demanda: Qu’as-tu à me dire?

20 And he said: The Jews have agreed to desire thee, that thou wouldst bring forth Paul tomorrow into the council, as if they meant to inquire some thing more certain touching him.

Et le jeune homme répondit: Les Juifs sont convenus de vous prier d’amener demain Paul devant le conseil, comme pour savoir quelque chose de plus certain sur lui;

21 But do not thou give credit to them; for there lie in wait for him more than forty men of them, who have bound themselves by oath neither to eat, nor to drink, till they have killed him: and they are now ready, looking for a promise from thee.

Mais vous, ne les croyez pas; car des embûches lui sont dressées par plus de quarante hommes d’entre eux, qui ont fait vœu de ne manger ni de boire, qu’ils ne l’aient tué; et maintenant ils sont prêts, attendant votre ordre.

22 The tribune therefore dismissed the young man, charging him that he should tell no man, that he had made known these things unto him.

Le tribun donc renvoya le jeune homme, lui défendant de dire à personne qu’il lui eût donné cet avis.

23 Then having called two centurions, he said to them: Make ready two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen for the third hour of the night:

Puis, deux centurions appelés, il leur dit: Tenez prêts, à la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats, soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents lances, pour aller jusqu’à Césarée,

24 And provide beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe to Felix the governor.

Et préparez des chevaux pour monter Paul, et le conduire sûrement au gouverneur Félix.

25 (For he feared lest perhaps the Jews might take him away by force and kill him, and he should afterwards be slandered, as if he was to take money.) And he wrote a letter after this manner:

(Car il craignit que les Juifs ne l’enlevassent et ne le tuassent, et qu’ensuite on ne l’accusât d’avoir reçu de l’argent.)

26 Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor, Felix, greeting.

Il écrivit en même temps une lettre conçue en ces termes: Claude Lysias à l’excellent gouverneur Félix, salut.

27 This man being taken by the Jews, and ready to be killed by them, I rescued coming in with an army, understanding that he is a Roman:

Les Juifs avaient pris cet homme, et ils allaient le tuer, lorsque, arrivant avec les soldats, je l’ai tirai de leurs mains, ayant appris qu’il était Romain;

28 And meaning to know the cause which they objected unto him, I brought him forth into their council.

Et voulant savoir de quoi ils l’accusaient, je l’ai conduit dans leur conseil.

29 Whom I found to be accused concerning questions of their law; but having nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bands.

J’ai trouvé qu’il était accusé au sujet de questions qui concernent leur loi; mais qu’il n’avait commis aucun crime digne de mort ou de prison.

30 And when I was told of ambushes that they had prepared for him, I sent him to thee, signifying also to his accusers to plead before thee. Farewell.

Et comme j’ai été averti des embûches qu’ils lui avaient dressées, je vous l’ai envoyé, déclarant aux accusateurs eux-mêmes, qu’ils aient à s’expliquer devant vous. Adieu.

31 Then the soldiers, according as it was commanded them, taking Paul, brought him by night to Antipatris.

Ainsi, selon l’ordre qu’ils avaient, les soldats prirent Paul avec eux, et le conduisirent de nuit à Antipatride.

32 And the next day, leaving the horsemen to go with him, they returned to the castle.

Et le jour suivant, ayant laissé les cavaliers aller avec lui, ils revinrent au camp.

33 Who, when they were come to Caesarea, and had delivered the letter to the governor, did also present Paul before him.

Lorsque les cavaliers furent arrivés à Césarée, et qu’ils eurent remis la lettre au gouverneur, ils lui présentèrent aussi Paul.

34 And when he had read it, and had asked of what province he was, and understood that he was of Cilicia;

Or, quand il eut reçu la lettre, et demandé à Paul de quelle province il était; apprenant qu’il était de Cilicie:

35 I will hear thee, said he, when thy accusers come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s judgment hall.

Je t’entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront venus. Et il ordonna de le garder dans le prétoire d’Hérode.
