< Acts 10 >
1 And there was a certain man in Caesarea, named Cornelius, a centurion of that which is called the Italian band;
Now there was a certain man in the city of Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment.
2 A religious man, and fearing God with all his house, giving much alms to the people, and always praying to God.
He was a devout man, one who worshiped God with all his household; he gave much money to those in need, and he constantly prayed to God.
3 This man saw in a vision manifestly, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in unto him, and saying to him: Cornelius.
About the ninth hour of the day, he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God coming to him. The angel said to him, “Cornelius!”
4 And he, beholding him, being seized with fear, said: What is it, Lord? And he said to him: Thy prayers and thy alms are ascended for a memorial in the sight of God.
Cornelius stared at the angel and was very frightened and said, “What is it, sir?” The angel said to him, “Your prayers and your gifts to the poor have gone up as a memorial offering into God's presence.
5 And now send men to Joppe, and call hither one Simon, who is surnamed Peter:
Now send men to the city of Joppa to bring a man named Simon who is called Peter.
6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side. He will tell thee what thou must do.
He is staying with a tanner named Simon, whose house is by the seaside.”
7 And when the angel who spoke to him was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a soldier who feared the Lord, of them that were under him.
When the angel who spoke to him had left, Cornelius called two of his house servants, and a devout soldier from among those who served him.
8 To whom when he had related all, he sent them to Joppe.
Cornelius told them all that had happened and sent them to Joppa.
9 And on the next day, whilst they were going on their journey, and drawing nigh to the city, Peter went up to the higher parts of the house to pray, about the sixth hour.
Now on the next day at about the sixth hour, as they were on their journey and were approaching the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray.
10 And being hungry, he was desirous to taste somewhat. And as they were preparing, there came upon him an ecstasy of mind.
He then became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while the people were cooking some food, he was given a vision,
11 And he saw the heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great linen sheet let down by the four corners from heaven to the earth:
and he saw the sky open and a certain container descending, something like a large sheet coming down to the earth, let down by its four corners.
12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts, and creeping things of the earth, and fowls of the air.
In it were all kinds of four-footed animals and things that crawled on the earth, and birds of the sky.
13 And there came a voice to him: Arise, Peter; kill and eat.
Then a voice spoke to him: “Rise, Peter, kill and eat.”
14 But Peter said: Far be it from me; for I never did eat any thing that is common and unclean.
But Peter said, “Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that was defiled and unclean.”
15 And the voice spoke to him again the second time: That which God hath cleansed, do not thou call common.
But the voice came to him again a second time: “What God has cleansed, do not call it defiled.”
16 And this was done thrice; and presently the vessel was taken up into heaven.
This happened three times; then the container was immediately taken back up into the sky.
17 Now, whilst Peter was doubting within himself, what the vision that he had seen should mean, behold the men who were sent from Cornelius, inquiring for Simon’s house, stood at the gate.
Now while Peter was very confused about what the vision that he had seen could mean, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius stood before the gate, after they had asked their way to the house.
18 And when they had called, they asked, if Simon, who is surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
They called out and asked whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was staying there.
19 And as Peter was thinking of the vision, the Spirit said to him: Behold three men seek thee.
While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you.
20 Arise, therefore, get thee down and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
Arise and go down and go with them. Do not hesitate to go with them, because I have sent them.”
21 Then Peter, going down to the men, said: Behold, I am he whom you seek; what is the cause for which you are come?
So Peter went down to the men and said, “I am he whom you are seeking. Why have you come?”
22 Who said: Cornelius, a centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and having good testimony from all the nation of the Jews, received an answer of an holy angel, to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
They said, “A centurion named Cornelius, a righteous man and one who worships God, and is well spoken of by all the nation of the Jews, was told by a holy angel of God to send for you to come to his house, so he could listen to a message from you.”
23 Then bringing them in, he lodged them. And the day following he arose, and went with them: and some of the brethren from Joppe accompanied him.
So Peter invited them to come in and stay with him. On the next morning he got up and went with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
24 And the morrow after, he entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, having called together his kinsmen and special friends.
On the following day they came to Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for them; he had called together his relatives and his close friends.
25 And it came to pass, that when Peter was come in, Cornelius came to meet him, Cornelius came to meet him, and falling at his feet adored.
It came about that when Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet to worship him.
26 But Peter lifted him up, saying: Arise, I myself also am a man.
But Peter helped him up, saying, “Stand up! I too am a man.”
27 And talking with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.
While Peter was talking with him, he went in and found many people gathered together.
28 And he said to them: You know how abominable it is for a man that is a Jew, to keep company or to come unto one of another nation: but God hath shewed to me, to call no man common or unclean.
He said to them, “You yourselves know that it is not lawful for a Jewish man to associate with or to visit someone from another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man defiled or unclean.
29 For which cause, making no doubt, I came when I was sent for. I ask, therefore, for what cause you have sent for me?
That is why I came without arguing, when I was sent for. So I ask you why you sent for me.”
30 And Cornelius said: Four days ago, unto this hour, I was praying in my house, at the ninth hour, and behold a man stood before me in white apparel, and said:
Cornelius said, “Four days ago at this very hour, I was praying at the ninth hour in my house; and see, a man stood before me in bright clothing.
31 Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thy alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.
He said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard by God, and your gifts to the poor have reminded God about you.
32 Send therefore to Joppe, and call hither Simon, who is surnamed Peter: he lodgeth in the house of Simon a tanner, by the sea side.
So send someone to Joppa, and call to you a man named Simon who is called Peter. He is staying in the house of a tanner named Simon, by the seaside.'
33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee: and thou hast done well in coming. Now therefore all we are present in thy sight, to hear all things whatsoever are commanded thee by the Lord.
So at once I sent for you. You are kind to have come. Now then, we are all here present in the sight of God, to hear everything that you have been instructed by the Lord to say.”
34 And Peter opening his mouth, said: In very deed I perceive, that God is not a respecter of persons.
Then Peter opened his mouth and said, “Truly, I perceive that God does not take anyone's side.
35 But in every nation, he that feareth him, and worketh justice, is acceptable to him.
Instead, in every nation anyone who worships and does righteous deeds is acceptable to him.
36 God sent the word to the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all.)
You know the message that he sent to the people of Israel, when he announced good news about peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all—
37 You know the word which hath been published through all Judea: for it began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached,
you yourselves know the events that took place, which occurred throughout all Judea, beginning in Galilee, after the baptism that John announced;
38 Jesus of Nazareth: how God anointed him with the Holy Ghost, and with power, who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
the events concerning Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
39 And we are witnesses of all things that he did in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed, hanging him upon a tree.
We are witnesses of all the things Jesus did, both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree,
40 Him God raised up the third day, and gave him to be made manifest,
but God raised him up on the third day and caused him to be seen,
41 Not to all the people, but to witnesses preordained by God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he arose again from the dead;
not by all the people, but to the witnesses who were chosen beforehand by God—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42 And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is he who was appointed by God, to be judge of the living and of the dead.
He commanded us to proclaim to the people and to testify that this is the one who has been chosen by God to be the Judge of the living and the dead.
43 To him all the prophets give testimony, that by his name all receive remission of sins, who believe in him.
It is to him that all the prophets bear witness, so that everyone who believes in him shall receive forgiveness of sins through his name.”
44 While Peter was yet speaking these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them that heard the word.
While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all of those who were listening to his message.
45 And the faithful of the circumcision, who came with Peter, were astonished, for that the grace of the Holy Ghost was poured out upon the Gentiles also.
The people who belonged to the circumcision group of believers—all of those who came with Peter—were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out also on the Gentiles.
46 For they heard them speaking with tongues, and magnifying God.
For they heard these Gentiles speak in other languages and praising God. Then Peter answered,
47 Then Peter answered: Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Ghost, as well as we?
“Can anyone keep water from these people so they should not be baptized, these people who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?”
48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Then they desired him to tarry with them some days.
Then he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay with them for several days.
