2 Kings 6
1 And the sons of the prophets said to Eliseus: Behold the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.
Et les fils des prophètes dirent à Elisée: Daigne considérer que le local où nous habitons devant toi, est trop restreint pour nous;
2 Let us go as far as the Jordan and take out of the wood every man a piece of timber, that we may build us there a place to dwell in. And he said: Go.
permets-nous donc d'aller au Jourdain, et d'y prendre chacun une solive, et nous nous ferons ici un local pour notre habitation. Et il dit: Allez!
3 And one of them said: But come thou also with thy servants. He answered: I will come.
Et l'un d'eux dit: Consens donc à venir avec tes serviteurs. Et il dit: J'irai.
4 So he went with them. And when they were come to the Jordan they cut down wood.
Et il s'achemina avec eux et ils arrivèrent au Jourdain et ils coupèrent les bois.
5 And it happened, as one was felling some timber, that the head of the axe fell into the water: and he cried out, and said: Alas, alas, alas, my lord, for this same was borrowed.
Et comme l'un d'eux abattait une solive, le fer tomba dans l'eau, et il s'écria disant: Hélas! mon Seigneur, il était emprunté.
6 And the man of God said: Where did it fall? and he shewed him the place. Then he cut off a piece of wood, and cast it in thither: and the iron swam.
Alors l'homme de Dieu dit: Où est-il tombé? Et quand il lui eut montré la place, Elisée coupa un morceau de bois et l'y jeta et fit surnager le fer.
7 And he said: Take it up. And he put out his hand and took it.
Et il dit: Ramasse-le! Et étendant la main il le prit.
8 And the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying: In such and such a place let us lay ambushes.
Cependant le roi de Syrie faisait la guerre en Israël et il se consulta avec ses serviteurs et dit: Dans tel lieu j'aurai mon camp.
9 And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying: Beware that thou pass not to such a place: for the Syrians are there in ambush.
Alors l'homme de Dieu envoya au roi d'Israël cet avis: Prends garde de négliger cette position-là, car les Syriens vont s'y embusquer.
10 And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God had told him, and prevented him, and looked well to himself there not once nor twice.
Alors le roi d'Israël fit occuper le lieu que lui indiquait et signalait l'homme de Dieu, et s'y tint en observation, et cela non pas à une seule, ni à deux reprises.
11 And the heart of the king of Syria was troubled for this thing. And calling together his servants, he said: Why do you not tell me who it is that betrays me to the king of Israel?
Et cette manœuvre inquiéta le cœur du roi de Syrie, qui manda ses serviteurs et leur dit: Ne me dénoncerez-vous pas celui des nôtres qui est pour le roi d'Israël?
12 And one of his servants said: No one, my lord O king: but Eliseus the prophet, that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel all the words, that thou speakest in thy privy chamber.
Et l'un de ses serviteurs dit: Non! ô roi, mon Seigneur, car c'est Elisée, le prophète, qui en Israël rapporte au roi d'Israël les mots que tu dis dans ta chambre à coucher.
13 And he said to them: Go, and see where he is: that I may send, and take him. And they told him, saying: Behold he is in Dothan.
Sur ce il dit: Allez voir où il est, afin que j'envoie le saisir. Et il lui vint cet avis: Voici, il est à Dothan.
14 Therefore he sent thither horses and chariots, and the strength of an army: and they came by night, and beset the city.
Alors il y expédia chevaux et chars et une grosse armée; et ils arrivèrent de nuit et cernèrent la ville.
15 And the servant of the man of God rising early, went out, and saw an army round about the city, and horses and chariots: and he told him, saying: Alas, alas, alas, my lord, what shall we do?
Et lorsque le matin celui qui servait l'homme de Dieu, se leva et sortit, voilà qu'une armée avec chevaux et chars enveloppait la ville. Et son valet lui dit: Ah! mon Seigneur, comment ferons-nous?
16 But he answered: Fear not: for there are more with us than with them.
Et il répondit: N'aie pas peur! car nous en avons plus pour nous qu'ils n'en ont pour eux.
17 And Eliseus prayed, and said: Lord, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the servant, and he saw: and behold the mountain was full of horses, and chariots of fire round about Eliseus.
Et Elisée fit sa prière et dit: Éternel, daigne lui ouvrir les yeux pour qu'il voie! Et l'Éternel ouvrit les yeux au valet, et il regarda, et voilà que la montagne était remplie de chevaux et de chars de feu entourant Elisée.
18 And the enemies came down to him, but Eliseus prayed to the Lord, saying: Strike, I beseech thee, this people with blindness. And the Lord struck them with blindness, according to the word of Eliseus.
Alors ils descendirent vers lui, et Elisée fit cette prière à l'Éternel: A ma prière frappe cette troupe-là d'aveuglement. Alors Il les frappa d'aveuglement selon la demande d'Elisée.
19 And Eliseus said to them: This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will shew you the man whom you seek. So he led them into Samaria.
Et Elisée leur dit: Ce n'est ni le chemin, ni la ville: suivez-moi, et je vous mènerai vers l'homme que vous cherchez. Et il les mena à Samarie.
20 And when they were come into Samaria, Eliseus said: Lord, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw themselves to be in the midst of Samaria.
Et quand ils arrivèrent à Samarie, Elisée dit: Éternel, ouvre-leur les yeux pour qu'ils voient. Alors l'Éternel leur ouvrit les yeux, et ils virent: et voilà qu'ils étaient au milieu de Samarie.
21 And the king of Israel said to Eliseus, when he saw them: My father, shall I kill them?
Et le roi d'Israël, lorsqu'il les vit, dit à Elisée: Frapperai-je? frapperai-je, mon père?
22 And he said: Thou shalt not kill them: for thou didst not take them with thy sword, or thy bow, that thou mayst kill them: but set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.
Et Elisée dit: Tu n'as pas à frapper: est-ce ceux que tu as faits prisonniers avec ton épée et ton arc, que tu frappes? Sers-leur du pain et de l'eau, et qu'ils mangent et boivent, puis s'en aillent vers leur Seigneur.
23 And a great provision of meats was set before them, and they ate and drank, and he let them go, and they went away to their master, and the robbers of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.
Alors il leur fit grande chère, et ils mangèrent et burent, et il les congédia et ils partirent vers leur Seigneur. Dès lors les bandes Syriennes n'infestèrent plus le territoire d'Israël.
24 And it came to pass after these things, that Benadad king of Syria gathered together all his army, and went up, and besieged Samaria.
Et plus tard Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, rassembla toute son armée et se mit en campagne et vint assiéger Samarie.
25 And there was a great famine in Samaria: and so long did the siege continue, till the head of an ass was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cabe of pigeon’s dung, for five pieces of silver.
Et il y avait grande famine à Samarie; et voici, ils la serrèrent de près jusqu'à faire monter à quatre-vingts sicles d'argent une tête d'âne, et à cinq sicles le quart d'un cab de fiente de pigeon.
26 And as the king of Israel was passing by the wall, a certain woman cried out to him, saying: Save me, my lord O king.
Et comme le roi d'Israël passait sur le rempart, une femme lui cria: Au secours! roi, mon Seigneur.
27 And he said: If the Lord doth not save thee, how can I save thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress? And the king said to her: What aileth thee? And she answered:
Et il dit: L'Éternel ne te secourt-Il pas? De quoi t'assisterais-je? de l'aire ou du pressoir?
28 This woman said to me: Give thy son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.
Et le roi lui dit: Que t'arrive-t-il? Et elle répondit: Cette femme-là m'a dit: Donne-moi ton fils et nous le mangerons aujourd'hui, et demain nous mangerons le mien.
29 So we boiled my son, and ate him. And I said to her on the next day: Give thy son that we may eat him. And she hath hid her son.
Alors nous fîmes cuire mon fils et nous l'avons mangé; et le jour suivant je lui ai dit: Donne ton fils et nous le mangerons; mais elle a caché son fils.
30 When the king heard this, he rent his garments, and passed by upon the wall. And all the people saw the haircloth which he wore within next to his flesh.
Et lorsque le roi ouït le discours de la femme, il déchira ses habits; et comme il passait sur la muraille, le peuple le vit et voilà qu'il portait intérieurement un cilice sur son corps.
31 And the king said: May God do so and so to me, and may he add more, if the head of Eliseus the son of Saphat shall stand on him this day.
Et il dit: Que Dieu me fasse ceci et pis encore si aujourd'hui la tête d'Elisée, fils de Schaphat, reste sur sa personne!
32 But Eliseus sat in his house, and the ancients sat with him. So he sent a man before: and before that messenger came, he said to the ancients: Do you know that this son of a murderer hath sent to cut off my head? Look then, when the messenger shall come, shut the door, and suffer him not to come in: for behold the sound of his master’s feet is behind him.
Cependant comme Elisée était assis dans sa maison et les Anciens assis auprès de lui, [le roi] envoya un homme avant lui. Mais avant que le messager arrivât chez lui, il dit aux Anciens: Voyez-vous que ce fils d'assassin envoie quelqu'un pour faire tomber ma tête? Observez quand le messager viendra; alors fermez la porte et repoussez-le à l'aide de la porte. N'entendez-vous pas le bruit des pas de son maître qui le suit?
33 While he was yet speaking to them, the messenger appeared who was coming to him. And he said: Behold, so great an evil is from the Lord: what shall I look for more from the Lord?
Il leur parlait encore que voilà que le messager descendit chez lui et dit: Voici, ce mal procède de l'Éternel: pourquoi m'attendrai-je encore à l'Éternel?
