2 Chronicles 20
1 After this the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them of the Ammonites, were gathered together to fight against Josaphat.
Après cela, il arriva que les Moabites et les Ammonites, assistés d’une partie des Maonites, entrèrent en campagne contre Josaphat.
2 And there came messengers, and told Josaphat, saying: There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea, and out of Syria, and behold they are in Asasonthamar, which is Engaddi.
On vint en informer Josaphat en ces termes: "Une grande multitude venue de l’autre côté de la mer, d’Edom, s’avance contre toi; déjà elle a atteint Haceçon-Tamar, c’est-à-dire En-Ghedi."
3 And Josaphat being seized with fear betook himself wholly to pray to the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Juda.
Josaphat prit peur et se disposa à avoir recours à l’Eternel; il fit proclamer un jeûne dans tout Juda.
4 And Juda gathered themselves together to pray to the Lord: and all came out of their cities to make supplication to him.
Juda se rassembla pour implorer le Seigneur; de toutes les villes de Juda on accourut pour lui adresser des supplications.
5 And Josaphat stood in the midst of the assembly of Juda, and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord before the new court,
Josaphat prit place au milieu de l’assemblée de Juda et de Jérusalem, dans le temple de l’Eternel, devant la cour Neuve,
6 And said: O Lord God of our fathers, thou art God in heaven, and rulest over all the kingdoms and nations, in thy hand is strength and power, and no one can resist thee.
et dit: "Seigneur, Dieu de nos pères, n’es-tu pas le Dieu qui trône au ciel et domine tous les empires des nations? En ta main sont la force et la puissance, et nul ne peut te résister.
7 Didst not thou our God kill all the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?
N’Est-ce pas toi, notre Dieu, qui as expulsé les habitants de ce pays devant ton peuple Israël et l’as donné pour toujours aux descendants d’Abraham, ton bien-aimé?
8 And they dwelt in it, and built in it a sanctuary to thy name, saying:
Ils s’y sont établis, t’y ont édifié un sanctuaire pour honorer ton nom, en disant:
9 If evils fall upon us, the sword of judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand in thy presence before this house, in which thy name is called upon: and we will cry to thee in our afflictions, and thou wilt hear, and save us.
"Qu’une calamité fonde sur nous, épée, fléau vengeur, épidémie ou famine, nous viendrons nous ranger devant cette maison et devant toi, car ton nom sera attaché à cette maison nous crierons vers toi du sein de notre détresse, et toi, tu entendras et prêteras secours.
10 Now therefore behold the children of Ammon, and of Moab, and mount Seir, through whose lands thou didst not allow Israel to pass, when they came out of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and slew them not,
Or maintenant, les fils d’Ammon, de Moab et du mont Séïr, que tu n’as pas permis à Israël d’attaquer lorsqu’ils vinrent du pays d’Egypte, mais dont ils se sont, au contraire, détournés, sans les anéantir,
11 Do the contrary, and endeavour to cast us out of the possession which thou hast delivered to us.
les voilà qui nous récompensent en venant nous chasser de ton héritage, que tu nous as octroyé!
12 O our God, wilt thou not then judge them? as for us we have not strength enough, to be able to resist this multitude, which cometh violently upon us. But as we know not what to do, we can only turn our eyes to thee.
Notre Dieu, n’exerceras-tu pas ta vindicte contre eux? Quant à nous, nous n’avons pas assez de force pour tenir tête à cette formidable multitude qui tombe sur nous. Nous ne savons que faire, mais nos yeux se tournent vers toi."
13 And all Juda stood before the Lord with their little ones, and their wives, and their children.
Cependant, tout Juda se tenait devant le Seigneur, y compris les petits enfants, les femmes et les jeunes gens.
14 And Jahaziel the son of Zacharias, the son of Banaias, the son of Jehiel, the son of Mathanias, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, was there, upon whom the spirit of the Lord came in the midst of the multitude,
Alors Yahaziël, fils de Zekhariahou, fils de Benaia, fils de Yeïêl, fils de Mattania, le Lévite, un des descendants d’Assaph, fut saisi de l’esprit de l’Eternel au milieu de l’assemblée:
15 And he said: Attend ye, all Juda, and you that dwell in Jerusalem, and thou king Josaphat: Thus saith the Lord to you: Fear ye not, and be not dismayed at this multitude: for the battle is not yours, but God’s.
"Ecoutez, s’écria-t-il, vous tous, hommes de Juda, habitants de Jérusalem et roi Josaphat! Voici ce que vous dit le Seigneur: N’Ayez point peur ni ne tremblez devant cette grande multitude, car ce n’est pas à vous qu’il appartient de combattre, mais à Dieu.
16 Tomorrow you shall go down against them: for they will come up by the ascent named Sis, and you shall find them at the head of the torrent, which is over against the wilderness of Jeruel.
Demain descendez sur eux: ils vont gravir la montée du Ciç, et vous vous trouverez en leur présence à l’extrémité de la vallée, en face du désert de Yerouël.
17 It shall not be you that shall fight, but only stand with confidence, and you shall see the help of the Lord over you, O Juda, and Jerusalem: fear ye not, nor be you dismayed: tomorrow you shall go out against them, and the Lord will be with you.
Ce n’est pas vous qui avez à combattre en cette circonstance; demeurez immobiles et vous verrez, Juda et Jérusalem, quelle victoire vous donnera l’Eternel. Ni crainte ni défaillance! Demain, marchez à leur rencontre, et l’Eternel sera avec vous."
18 Then Josaphat, and Juda, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell hat on the ground before the Lord, and adored him.
Josaphat s’inclina, la face contre terre; de même, tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem plièrent le genou et se prosternèrent devant l’Eternel.
19 And the Levites of the sons of Caath, and of the sons of Core praised the Lord the God of Israel with a loud voice, on high.
Et les Lévites, se rattachant aux fils de Kehath et aux fils de Coré, se levèrent pour glorifier l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, en chantant de toutes leurs forces.
20 And they rose early in the morning, and went out through the desert of Thecua: and as they were marching, Josaphat standing in the midst of them, said: Hear me, ye men of Juda, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be secure: believe his prophets, and all things shall succeed well.
Le lendemain matin, de bonne heure, on se dirigea vers le désert de Tekoa, et, au moment du départ, Josaphat se tint là et dit: "Ecoutez-moi, Juda et habitants de Jérusalem! Ayez foi en l’Eternel, et votre confiance sera justifiée; croyez-en ses prophètes, et vous triompherez!"
21 And he gave counsel to the people, and appointed the singing men of the Lord, to praise him by their companies, and to go before the army, and with one voice to say: Give glory to the Lord, for his mercy endureth for ever.
Après s’être concerté avec le peuple, Josaphat disposa des chanteurs en l’honneur de l’Eternel, pour le célébrer dans un saint apparat, en marchant à la tête de l’armée et en répétant: "Rendez grâces au Seigneur, car sa bonté est éternelle!"
22 And when they began to sing praises, the Lord turned their ambushments upon themselves, that is to say, of the children of Ammon, and of Moab, and of mount Seir, who were come out to fight against Juda, and they were slain.
Tandis qu’ils entonnaient cantiques et louanges, l’Eternel suscita des embûches contre les gens d’Ammon, de Moab et du mont Séïr, venus contre Juda, et ils furent battus.
23 For the children of Ammon, and of Moab, rose up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, to kill and destroy them: and when they had made an end of them, they turned also against one another, and destroyed one another.
Les gens d’Ammon et de Moab se dressèrent contre les habitants du mont Séïr pour les exterminer et les anéantir, et, une fois la destruction des habitants de Séïr accomplie, ils se prêtèrent main-forte pour s’entretuer eux-mêmes.
24 And when Juda came to the watch tower, that looketh toward the desert, they saw afar off all the country, for a great space, full of dead bodies, and that no one was left that could escape death.
Lorsque les gens de Juda arrivèrent sur la hauteur d’où la vue plonge sur le désert et tournèrent les regards vers la multitude des ennemis, ils ne virent que cadavres, gisant à terre, personne n’ayant échappé.
25 Then Josaphat came, and all the people with him to take away the spoils of the dead, and they found among the dead bodies, stuff of various kinds, and garments, and most precious vessels: and they took them for themselves, insomuch that they could not carry all, nor in three days take away the spoils, the booty was so great.
Josaphat et son peuple s’avancèrent pour faire main basse sur leurs dépouilles; ils trouvèrent parmi eux une grande abondance de richesses, de corps morts et de vases précieux. Ils en prirent tant qu’ils ne purent tout emporter. Pendant trois jours ils furent occupés à piller, le butin étant considérable.
26 And on the fourth day they were assembled in the valley of Blessing: for there they blessed the Lord, and therefore they called that place the valley of Blessing until this day.
Le quatrième jour, ils se réunirent dans la vallée de la Bénédiction, car là ils bénirent l’Eternel. C’Est pourquoi cette localité reçut le nom de Vallée de la Bénédiction, qu’elle porte encore aujourd’hui.
27 And every man of Juda, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem returned, and Josaphat at their head, into Jerusalem with great joy, because the Lord had made them rejoice over their enemies.
Puis, tous les hommes de Juda et de Jérusalem, dirigés par Josaphat, se mirent en route pour retourner à Jérusalem, transportés de joie, car l’Eternel les avait mis en joie à propos de leurs ennemis.
28 And they came into Jerusalem with psalteries, and harps, and trumpets into the house of the Lord.
Ils entrèrent donc à Jérusalem, au son des luths, des harpes et des trompettes et se rendirent au temple de l’Eternel.
29 And the fear of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.
La crainte de Dieu s’empara de tous les empires, quand ils apprirent que l’Eternel avait combattu contre les ennemis d’Israël.
30 And the kingdom of Josaphat was quiet, and God gave him peace round about.
Dès lors, le royaume de Josaphat fut en paix, Dieu lui assura le repos de toute part.
31 And Josaphat reigned over Juda, and he was five and thirty years old when he began to reign: and he reigned five and twenty years in Jerusalem: and the name of his mother was Azuba the daughter of Selahi.
Ainsi régna Josaphat sur Juda. Il avait trente-cinq ans à son avènement et il régna vingt-cinq ans à Jérusalem. Il avait pour mère Azouba, fille de Chilhi.
32 And he walked in the way of his father Asa, and departed not from it, doing the things that were pleasing before the Lord.
Il suivit la voie d’Asa, son père, sans s’en détourner; il fit le bien aux yeux de l’Eternel.
33 But yet he took not away the high places, and the people had not yet turned their heart to the Lord the God of their fathers.
Toutefois, les hauts lieux ne disparurent point: le peuple n’avait pas encore donné tout son cœur au Dieu de ses ancêtres.
34 But the rest of the acts of Josaphat, first and last, are written in the words of Jehu the son of Hanani, which he digested into the books of the kings of Israel.
Quant au reste de l’histoire de Josaphat, du commencement à la fin, elle est relatée dans le récit de Jéhu, fils de Hanani, qui a été intercalé dans le Livre des Rois d’Israël.
35 After these things Josaphat king of Juda made friendship with Ochozias king of Israel, whose works were very wicked.
Finalement, Josaphat, roi de Juda, s’allia avec Achazia, roi d’Israël, dont la conduite fut impie.
36 And he was partner with him in making ships, to go to Tharsis: and they made the ships in Asiongaber.
Josaphat se mit d’accord avec lui pour construire une flotte qui devait se rendre à Tarsis. Cette flotte, ils la construisirent à Ecion-Ghéber.
37 And Eliezer the son of Dodau of Maresa prophesied to Josaphat, saying: Because thou hast made a league with Ochozias, the Lord hath destroyed thy works, and the ships are broken, and they could not go to Tharsis.
Alors Eliézer, fils de Dodavahou, de Marêcha, adressa une prophétie à Josaphat en ces termes: "Parce que tu t’es allié à Achazia, le Seigneur ruine ton entreprise." Les navires firent naufrage, et ne parvinrent pas à se rendre à Tarsis.
