< 1 Samuel 4 >
1 And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight: and Israel went out to war against the Philistines, and camped by the Stone of help. And the Philistines came to Aphec,
2 And put their army in array against Israel. And when they had joined battle, Israel turned their backs to the Philistines, and there was slain in that fight here and there in the fields about four thousand men.
Pea naʻe hiki ʻae tau ʻae kau Filisitia ke tau ki ʻIsileli: pea ʻi he fakahoko ʻae tau, naʻe teʻia leva ʻa ʻIsileli ʻi he ʻao ʻoe kau Filisitia: pea naʻa nau taaʻi ʻi he tau ʻi he ngoue ʻae kau tangata ʻe toko fā afe nai.
3 And the people returned to the camp: and the ancients of Israel said: Why hath the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us fetch unto us the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Silo, and let it come in the midst of us, that it may save us from the hand of our enemies.
Pea ʻi he hoko mai ʻae kakai ki he ʻapitanga, naʻe pehē ʻe he kau mātuʻa ʻo ʻIsileli, “Ko e hā kuo teʻia ai ʻe Sihova kitautolu he ʻaho ni ʻi he ʻao ʻoe kau Filisitia? Ke tau ʻomi kiate kitautolu ʻae puha ʻoe fuakava ʻo Sihova mei Sailo, koeʻuhi, ʻi heʻene hoko kiate kitautolu, ke ne fakamoʻui ʻakitautolu mei he nima ʻo hotau ngaahi fili.”
4 So the people sent to Silo, and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts sitting upon the cherubims: and the two sons of Heli, Ophni and Phinees, were with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord was come into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, and the earth rang again.
Pea ʻi he hoko ʻae puha ʻoe fuakava ʻo Sihova ki he ʻapitanga, naʻe mavava ʻa ʻIsileli kotoa pē ʻi he mavava lahi, ko ia naʻe ʻuʻulu ai ʻae fonua.
6 And the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, and they said: What is this noise of a great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.
Pea ʻi he fanongo ʻae kakai Filisitia ki he longoaʻa ʻoe mavava, naʻa nau pehē, “Ko e hā hono ʻuhinga ʻoe fuʻu mavava lahi ni ʻi he ʻapitanga ʻoe kakai Hepelū? Pea naʻa nau ʻilo kuo hoko ʻae puha tapu ʻo Sihova ki he ʻapitanga.
7 And the Philistines were afraid, saying: God is come into the camp. And sighing, they said:
Pea naʻe manavahē ai ʻae kakai Filisitia, he naʻa nau pehē, Kuo hāʻele mai ʻae ʻOtua ki he ʻapitanga. Pea naʻa nau pehē, Malaʻia kiate kitautolu! He kuo ʻikai ha meʻa pehē talu mei muʻa.
8 Woe to us: for there was no such great joy yesterday and the day before: Woe to us. Who shall deliver us from the hand of these high gods? these are the gods that struck Egypt with all the plagues in the desert.
Malaʻia kiate kitautolu! Ko e ngaahi ʻOtua eni naʻe taaʻi ʻae kakai ʻIsipite ʻi he ngaahi meʻa mamahi lahi ʻi he toafa.
9 Take courage and behave like men, ye Philistines: lest you come to be servants to the Hebrews, as they have served you: take courage and fight.
10 So the Philistines fought, and Israel was overthrown, and every man fled to his own dwelling: and there was an exceeding great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
Pea naʻe tau ʻae kau Filisitia, pea naʻe toe teʻia ʻa ʻIsileli, pea naʻa nau hola ʻae tangata taki taha ki hono fale fehikitaki: pea naʻe mate ai ʻae tokolahi ʻaupito he naʻe tō ai ʻae toko tolu mano ʻoe kau tangata ʻIsileli naʻe ʻalu ʻi lalo.
11 And the ark of God was taken: and the two sons of Heli, Ophni and Phinees, were slain.
Pea naʻe moʻua ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua; pea naʻe tāmateʻi ʻae ongo foha ʻo Ilai ko Hofini mo Finiasi.
12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Silo the same day, with his clothes rent, and his head strewed with dust.
Pea naʻe lele ʻae tangata Penisimani mei he tau, ʻo hoko ki Sailo ʻi he ʻaho ko ia, kuo mahaehae hono kofu, pea pani kelekele hono ʻulu.
13 And when he was come, Heli sat upon a stool over against the way watching. For his heart was fearful for the ark of God. And when the man was come into the city, he told it: and all the city cried out.
Pea ʻi heʻene hoko ki ai vakai naʻe nofo leʻo pe ʻa Ilai ʻi he nofoʻa ʻi he veʻehala: he naʻe tetetete hono loto telia ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua. Pea ʻi he hoko ʻae tangata ki he kolo, ʻo fakahā ia, naʻe tangi kalanga ʻae kolo kotoa pē.
14 And Heli heard the noise of the cry, and he said: What meaneth the noise of this uproar? But he made haste, and came, and told Heli.
Pea ʻi heʻene ongoʻi ʻe Ilai ʻae leʻo ʻoe tangi, naʻe pehē ʻe ia, “Ko e hā hono ʻuhinga ʻoe maveuveu ni?” Pea naʻe haʻu fakatoʻotoʻo ʻae tangata ʻo tala kia Ilai.
15 Now Heli was ninety and eight years old, and his eyes were dim, and he could not see.
Pea naʻe hivangofulu taʻu mo e taʻu ʻe valu ʻae motuʻa ʻo Ilai; pea kuo poʻuli hono mata, naʻe ʻikai faʻa mamata.
16 And he said to Heli: I am he that came from the battle, and have fled out of the field this day. And he said to him: What is there done, my son?
Pea naʻe pehē ʻe he tangata kia Ilai, “Ko au ia kuo u haʻu mei he tau, pea u hola mei he tau he ʻaho ni. Pea pehē ʻe ia, “ʻE hoku foha, Ko e hā kuo fai?”
17 And he that brought the news answered, and said: Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter of the people: moreover thy two sons, Ophni and Phinees, are dead: and the ark of God is taken.
Pea talaange ʻe he tangata fekau, “Kuo hola ʻa ʻIsileli mei he ʻao ʻoe kakai Filisitia, pea kuo tō ʻae tokolahi ʻi he kakai, pea kuo mate ʻa ho ongo foha ko Hofini mo Finiasi, pea kuo moʻua ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua.”
18 And when he had named the ark of God, he fell from his stool backwards by the door, and broke his neck, and died. For he was an old man, and far advanced in years: and he judged Israel forty years.
Pea ʻi heʻene lea ki he puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua, naʻe hoko ʻo pehē, naʻe tō fakaholomui ia mei he nofoʻa ʻi he potu ʻoe matapā, pea mafesi ai hono kia, pea pekia ai: he ko e tangata motuʻa ia pea mamafa. Pea naʻe fakamaauʻi ʻe ia ʻa ʻIsileli ʻi he taʻu ʻe fāngofulu.
19 And his daughter in law the wife of Phinees, was big with child, and near her time: and hearing the news that the ark of God was taken, and her father in law, and her husband, were dead, she bowed herself and fell in labour: for her pains came upon her on a sudden.
Pea naʻe feitama hono ʻofefine ʻi he fono, ko e uaifi ʻo Finiasi, kuo kakato hono māhina ke fāʻele: pea ʻi heʻene ongoʻi ʻae ongoongo kuo moʻua ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua, pea kuo pekia ʻa ʻene tamai ʻi he fono, mo hono husepāniti, naʻe punou hifo ʻe ia ia pea langā; he naʻe hoko leva ʻae langā kiate ia.
20 And when she was upon the point of death, they that stood about her said to her: Fear not, for thou hast borne a son. She answered them not, nor gave heed to them.
Pea feʻunga mo ʻene pekia, naʻe pehē kiate ia ʻe he kau fefine naʻe tuʻu ofi kiate ia, ʻoua naʻa ke manavahē; he kuo ke fāʻeleʻi ʻae tama. Ka naʻe ʻikai te ne lea, pea naʻe ʻikai te ne tokanga ki ai.
21 And she called the child Ichabod, saying: The glory is gone from Israel, because the ark of God was taken, and for her father in law, and her husband:
Pea naʻa ne ui ʻae tama ko Ikapote, ko e pehē, Kuo mole ʻae nāunau mei ʻIsileli: koeʻuhi kuo moʻua ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua, pea koeʻuhi kuo pekia ʻene tamai ʻi he fono mo hono uaifi.
22 And she said: The glory is departed from Israel, because the ark of God was taken.
Pea naʻe pehē ʻe ia, Kuo mole ʻae nāunau mei ʻIsileli: he kuo moʻua ʻae puha tapu ʻoe ʻOtua.
