1 Samuel 22

1 David therefore went from thence and fled to the cave of Odollam. And when his brethren, and all his father’s house had heard of it, they went down to him thither;

David partit de ce lieu et alla se réfugier dans la caverne d’Adoullam. Ses frères et toute sa famille paternelle, l’ayant appris, y descendirent auprès de lui.

2 And all that were in distress and oppressed with debt, and under affliction of mind gathered themselves unto him: and he became their prince, and there were with him about four hundred men.

A lui se joignirent aussi tout homme en détresse, tous ceux qui avaient des créanciers, tous les désespérés; il devint leur chef. Environ quatre cents hommes se groupèrent autour de lui.

3 And David departed from thence into Maspha of Moab: and he said to the king of Moab: Let my father and my mother tarry with you, I beseech thee, till I know what God will do for me.

De là, David se rendit à Miçpé-Moab, et il dit au roi de Moab "Permets que mon père et ma mère aillent demeurer chez vous, jusqu’à ce que je sache ce que Dieu décidera de moi."

4 And he left them under the eyes of the king of Moab, and they abode with him all the days that David was in the hold.

Il les conduisit donc devant le roi de Moab, chez qui ils demeurèrent tout le temps que David passa dans le fort.

5 And Gad the prophet said to David: Abide not in the hold, depart, and go into the land of Juda. And David departed, and came into the forest of Haret.

Gad, le prophète, dit à David: "Ne reste pas dans le fort; va-t’en et rends-toi au pays de Juda." David s’en alla et arriva au bois de Héreth.

6 And Saul heard that David was seen, and the men that were with him. Now whilst Saul abode in Gabaa, and was in the wood, which is by Rama, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him,

Or, Saül apprit qu’on avait découvert David et ceux qui l’accompagnaient. Saül était alors à Ghibea, assis sous le tamarisc, sur la hauteur, sa lance à la main, tous ses serviteurs debout près de lui.

7 He said to his servants that stood about him: Hear me now, ye sons of Jemini: will the son of Isai give everyone of you fields, and vineyards, and make you all tribunes, and centurions:

Et Saül dit à ses serviteurs qui se tenaient près de lui: "Ecoutez, ô Benjamites! Est-ce que le fils de Jessé vous donnera à tous des champs et des vignes? Fera-t-il de vous tous des chefs de mille, des chefs de cent?

8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one to inform me, especially when even my son hath entered into league with the soil of Isai? There is not one of you that pitieth my case, nor that giveth me any information: because my son hath raised up my servant against me, plotting against me to this day.

Car vous vous êtes tous ligués contre moi, personne ne m’a révélé le pacte de mon fils avec le fils de Jessé, nul d’entre vous ne s’inquiète de moi, ne me révèle rien, alors que mon fils me suscite dans mon serviteur un traître, comme en ce jour!"

9 And Doeg the Edomite who stood by, and was the chief among the servants of Saul, answering, said: I saw the son of Isai, in Nobe with Achimelech the son of Achitob the priest.

Doëg l’lduméen, qui était préposé aux serviteurs de Saül, prit la parole et dit: "J’Ai vu le fils de Jessé venir à Nob, chez Ahimélec, fils d’Ahitoub,

10 And he consulted the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.

qui a consulté pour lui le Seigneur, lui a donné des provisions, lui a remis aussi le glaive de Goliath, le Philistin."

11 Then the king sent to call for Achimelech the priest the son of Achitob, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nobe, and they came all of them to the king.

Le roi fit appeler Ahimélec, fils d’Ahitoub, le prêtre, et tous les prêtres de sa famille, résidant à Nob, et tous vinrent chez le roi.

12 And Saul said to Achimelech: Hear, thou son of Achitob. He answered: Here I am, my lord.

Et Saül dit: "Ecoute, fils d’Ahitoub!" Il répondit: "Je suis prêt, Seigneur."

13 And Saul said to him: Why have you conspired against me, thou, and the son of Isai, and thou hast given him bread and a sword, and hast consulted the Lord for him, that he should rise up against me, continuing a traitor to this day.

Et Saül lui dit: "Pourquoi t’es-tu ligué contre moi avec le fils de Jessé, en lui donnant du pain et une épée et en consultant Dieu à son intention, pour qu’il se levât traîtreusement contre moi comme en ce jour?"

14 And Achimelech answering the king, said: And who amongst all thy servants is so faithful as David, who is the king’s son in law, and goeth forth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thy house?

Ahimélec répondît au roi: "Eh! Qui, entre tous tes serviteurs, est fidèle comme David, avec cela gendre du roi, soumis à ton autorité, honoré dans ta maison?

15 Did I begin today to consult the Lord for him? far be this from me: let not the king suspect such a thing against his servant, or any one in all my father’s house: for thy servant knew nothing of this matter, either little or great.

Est-ce aujourd’hui que j’aurais commencé à interroger pour lui le Seigneur? Loin de moi! Que le roi n’impute aucun tort à son serviteur, à personne de ma famille, car ton serviteur ne sait rien de tout cela, ni peu ni prou."

16 And the king said: Dying thou shalt die, Achimelech, thou and all thy father’s house.

Certes, dit le roi, tu mourras, Ahimélec, toi et toute ta famille!"

17 And the king said to the messengers that stood about him: Turn, and kill the priests of the Lord, for their hand is with David, because they knew that he was fled, and they told it not to me. And the king’s servants would not put forth their hands against the priests of the Lord.

Et le roi dit aux satellites qui l’entouraient: "Approchez, et mettez à mort les prêtres du Seigneur, car ils sont complices de David; ils savaient qu’il était en fuite et ne l’ont pas dénoncé." Mais les serviteurs du roi n’osèrent pas frapper et porter la main sur les prêtres du Seigneur.

18 And the king said to Doeg: Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and fell upon the priests and slew in that day eighty-five men that wore the linen ephod.

Et le roi dit à Doëg: "Approche, toi, et frappe les prêtres!" Et Doëg l’lduméen s’approcha et frappa les prêtres. Il fit mourir, ce jour-là, quatre-vingt-cinq hommes portant l’éphod de lin.

19 And Nobe the city of the priests he smote with the edge of his sword, both men and women, children, and sucklings, and ox and ass, and sheep with the edge of the sword.

Et Nob, la ville des prêtres, fut passée au fil de l’épée; hommes et femmes, jusqu’aux petits enfants et aux nourrissons, bœufs et ânes, menu bétail, tout au fil de l’épée.

20 But one of the sons of Achimelech the son of Achitob, whose name was Abiathar, escaped, and fled to David,

Il n’échappa qu’un fils d’Ahimélec, fils d’Ahitoub, nommé Ebiatar, qui s’enfuit, rejoignant David.

21 And told him that Saul had slain the priests of the Lord.

Ebiatar apprit à David que Saül avait fait périr les prêtres du Seigneur.

22 And David said to Abiathar: I knew that day when Doeg the Edomite was there, that without doubt he would tell Saul: I have been the occasion of the death of all the souls of thy father’s house.

Et David dit à Ebiatar: "Je savais, ce jour-là, Doëg l’Iduméen étant présent, qu’il me dénoncerait à Saül. C’Est moi qui ai fait le malheur de toute ta famille.

23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life, seeketh thy life also, and with me thou shalt be saved.

Demeure avec moi, ne crains rien. Qui en veut à ma vie en voudra à la tienne, mais tu es en sûreté auprès de moi."
