1 Samuel 17
1 Now the Philistines gathering together their troops to battle, assembled at Socho of Juda, and camped between Socho and Azeca in the borders of Dommim.
Les Philistins rassemblèrent leurs armées pour combattre; ils se rassemblèrent à Soco, qui appartient à Juda, et ils campèrent entre Soco et Azéka, à Éphesdammim.
2 And Saul and the children of Israel being gathered together came to the valley of Terebinth, and they set the army in array to fight against the Philistines.
Saül et les hommes d`Israël se rassemblèrent, campèrent dans la vallée d`Éla, et se rangèrent en bataille contre les Philistins.
3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
Les Philistins se tenaient sur la montagne d'un côté, et Israël sur la montagne de l'autre côté; il y avait une vallée entre eux.
4 And there went out a man baseborn from the camp of the Philistines named Goliath, of Geth, whose height was six cubits and a span:
Un champion sortit du camp des Philistins, nommé Goliath de Gath, dont la taille était de six coudées et un empan.
5 And he had a helmet of brass upon his head, and he was clothed with a coat of mail with scales, and the weight of his coat of mail was five thousand sicles of brass:
Il avait sur la tête un casque d'airain, et il portait une cotte de mailles; le poids de la cotte était de cinq mille sicles d'airain.
6 And he had greaves of brass on his legs, and a buckler of brass covered his shoulders.
Il avait une cuirasse d'airain à ses jambes et un javelot d'airain entre ses épaules.
7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and the head of his spear weighed six hundred sicles of iron: and his armourbearer went before him.
Le bâton de sa lance était comme une poutre de tisserand, et la tête de sa lance pesait six cents sicles de fer. Le porteur de son bouclier marchait devant lui.
8 And standing he cried out to the bands of Israel, and said to them: Why are you come out prepared to fight? am not I a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose out a man of you, and let him come down and fight hand to hand.
Il se tenait debout et criait aux armées d`Israël, et il leur disait: « Pourquoi êtes-vous sortis pour vous ranger en bataille? Ne suis-je pas un Philistin, et n'êtes-vous pas les serviteurs de Saül? Choisissez un homme pour vous, et qu'il descende vers moi.
9 If he be able to fight with me, and kill me, we will be servants to you: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, you shall be servants, and shall serve us.
S'il peut me combattre et me tuer, alors nous serons vos serviteurs; mais si je l'emporte sur lui et le tue, alors vous serez nos serviteurs et vous nous servirez. »
10 And the Philistine said: I have defied the bands of Israel this day: Give me a man, and let him fight with me hand to hand.
Le Philistin dit: « Je défie aujourd'hui les armées d'Israël! Donne-moi un homme, que nous puissions combattre ensemble! »
11 And Saul and all the Israelites hearing these words of the Philistine were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
Lorsque Saül et tout Israël entendirent ces paroles du Philistin, ils furent consternés et eurent une grande crainte.
12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Juda before mentioned, whose name was Isai, who had eight sons, and was an old man in the days of Saul, and of great age among men.
Or David était le fils d'un Éphrathien de Bethléem en Judée, dont le nom était Isaï, et il avait huit fils. Cet homme était un vieillard du temps de Saül.
13 And his three eldest sons followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle, were Eliab the firstborn, and the second Abinadab, and the third Samma.
Les trois fils aînés d'Isaï étaient partis au combat après Saül; et les noms de ses trois fils partis au combat étaient: Éliab, le premier-né; à côté de lui, Abinadab; et le troisième, Shammah.
14 But David was the youngest. So the three eldest having followed Saul,
David était le plus jeune, et les trois plus âgés suivaient Saül.
15 David went, and returned from Saul, to feed his father’s flock at Bethlehem.
Et David allait et venait de Saül pour faire paître les brebis de son père à Bethléhem.
16 Now the Philistine came out morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
Le Philistin s'approcha matin et soir, et se présenta pendant quarante jours.
17 And Isai said to David his son: Take for thy brethren an ephi of frumenty, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren.
Isaï dit à David, son fils: « Prends maintenant pour tes frères un épha de ce grain desséché et ces dix pains, et porte-les vite au camp à tes frères;
18 And carry these ten little cheeses to the tribune: and go see thy brethren, if they are well: and learn with whom they are placed.
et apporte ces dix fromages au chef de leurs mille; regarde comment vont tes frères, et rapporte des nouvelles. »
19 But Saul, and they, and all the children of Israel were in the valley of Terebinth fighting against the Philistines.
Or Saül, eux et tous les hommes d'Israël étaient dans la vallée d'Elah, en train de combattre les Philistins.
20 David therefore arose in the morning, and gave the charge of the flock to the keeper: and went away loaded as Isai had commanded him. And he came to the place of Magala, and to the army, which was going out to fight, and shouted for the battle.
David se leva de bon matin, laissa les brebis à un gardien, prit les provisions et partit, comme Jessé le lui avait ordonné. Il arriva au lieu où se trouvaient les chariots, au moment où l'armée qui partait au combat poussait des cris de guerre.
21 For Israel had put themselves in array, and the Philistines who stood against them were prepared.
Israël et les Philistins se mirent en ordre de bataille, armée contre armée.
22 And David leaving the vessels which he had brought, under the care of the keeper of the baggage, ran to the place of the battle and asked if all things went well with his brethren.
David laissa son bagage entre les mains du gardien des bagages et courut vers l'armée, puis il vint saluer ses frères.
23 And as he talked with them, that baseborn man whose name was Goliath, the Philistine, of Geth, shewed himself coming up from the camp of the Philistines: and he spoke according to the same words, and David heard them.
Comme il parlait avec eux, voici que le champion, le Philistin de Gath, du nom de Goliath, sortit des rangs des Philistins et prononça les mêmes paroles; David les entendit.
24 And all the Israelites when they saw the man, fled from his face, fearing him exceedingly.
Tous les hommes d'Israël, à la vue de cet homme, s'enfuirent devant lui et furent terrifiés.
25 And some one of Israel said: Have you seen this man that is come up, for he is come up to defy Israel. And the man that shall slay him, the king will enrich with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and will make his father’s house free from tribute in Israel.
Les hommes d'Israël dirent: « Avez-vous vu cet homme qui est monté? Il est certainement monté pour défier Israël. Le roi donnera de grandes richesses à l'homme qui le tuera, il lui donnera sa fille, et il rendra la maison de son père exempte d'impôts en Israël. »
26 And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying: What shall be given to the man that shall kill this Philistine, and shall take away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
David parla aux hommes qui se tenaient près de lui, et dit: « Que fera-t-on à l'homme qui tuera ce Philistin et ôtera l'opprobre d'Israël? Car qui est ce Philistin incirconcis, pour qu'il défie les armées du Dieu vivant? ».
27 And the people answered him the same words saying: These things shall be given to the man that shall slay him.
Le peuple lui répondit ainsi: « Il en sera de même pour celui qui le tuera. »
28 Now when Eliab his eldest brother heard this, when he was speaking with others, he was angry with David, and said: Why earnest thou hither? and why didst thou leave those few sheep in the desert? I know thy pride, and the wickedness of thy heart: that thou art come down to see the battle.
Eliab, son frère aîné, entendit quand il parlait aux hommes; et la colère d'Eliab s'enflamma contre David, et il dit: « Pourquoi es-tu descendu? Avec qui as-tu laissé ces quelques brebis dans le désert? Je connais ton orgueil et la méchanceté de ton cœur, car tu es descendu pour voir la bataille. »
29 And David said: What have I done? is there not cause to speak?
David dit: « Qu'ai-je donc fait? N'y a-t-il pas une cause? »
30 And he turned a little aside from him to another: and said the same word. And the people answered him as before.
Il se détourna vers un autre, et parla de nouveau de la même manière; le peuple lui répondit de la même façon.
31 And the words which David spoke were heard, and were rehearsed before Saul.
Lorsqu'on eut entendu les paroles que David avait prononcées, on les répéta devant Saül, qui le fit appeler.
32 And when he was brought to him, he said to him: Let not any man’s heart be dismayed in him: I thy servant will go, and will fight against the Philistine.
David dit à Saül: « Que le cœur de personne ne se trouble à cause de lui. Ton serviteur ira combattre ce Philistin. »
33 And Saul said to David: Thou art not able to withstand this Philistine, nor to fight against him: for thou art but a boy, but he is a warrior from his youth.
Saül dit à David: « Tu n'es pas capable d'aller contre ce Philistin pour le combattre, car tu n'es qu'un jeune homme, et lui un homme de guerre depuis sa jeunesse. »
34 And David said to Saul: Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, or a bear, and took a ram out of the midst of the flock:
David dit à Saül: « Ton serviteur gardait les brebis de son père; et quand un lion ou un ours venait et prenait un agneau du troupeau,
35 And I pursued after them, and struck them, and delivered it out of their mouth: and they rose up against me, and I caught them by the throat, and I strangled and killed them.
je sortais après lui, je le frappais et je le sauvais de sa bouche. Quand il s'est dressé contre moi, je l'ai attrapé par la barbe, je l'ai frappé et je l'ai tué.
36 For I thy servant have killed both a lion and a bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be also as one of them. I will go now, and take away the reproach of the people: for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, who hath dared to curse the army of the living God?
Ton serviteur a frappé le lion et l'ours. Ce Philistin incirconcis sera comme l'un d'eux, puisqu'il a défié les armées du Dieu vivant. »
37 And David said: The Lord who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David: Go, and the Lord be with thee.
David dit: « Yahvé, qui m'a délivré de la patte du lion et de la patte de l'ours, me délivrera de la main de ce Philistin. » Saül dit à David: « Va, Yahvé sera avec toi. »
38 And Saul clothed David with his garments, and put a helmet of brass upon his head, and armed him with a coat of mail.
Saül habilla David de ses vêtements. Il lui mit un casque d'airain sur la tête et le revêtit d'une cotte de mailles.
39 And David having girded his sword upon his armour, began to try if he could walk in armour: for he was not accustomed to it. And David said to Saul: I cannot go thus, for I am not used to it. And he laid them off,
David attacha son épée à ses vêtements et il essaya de bouger, car il ne l'avait pas testée. David dit à Saül: « Je ne peux pas aller avec ces vêtements, car je ne les ai pas testés. » Puis David les enleva.
40 And he took his staff, which he had always in his hands: and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them into the shepherd’s scrip, which he had with him, and he took a sling in his hand, and went forth against the Philistine.
Il prit son bâton en main, se choisit cinq pierres lisses dans le ruisseau, et les mit dans la poche de son sac de berger qu'il avait. Il les mit dans la poche de son sac de berger, qu`il avait. Il avait sa fronde à la main, et il s`approcha du Philistin.
41 And the Philistine came on, and drew nigh against David, and his armourbearer before him.
Le Philistin marchait et s'approchait de David, et l'homme qui portait le bouclier marchait devant lui.
42 And when the Philistine looked, and beheld David, he despised him. For he was a young man, ruddy, and of a comely countenance.
Le Philistin regarda autour de lui et vit David, et il le dédaigna; car il était jeune, il avait de la peau et un beau visage.
43 And the Philistine said to David: Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with a staff? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
Le Philistin dit à David: « Suis-je un chien, pour que tu viennes à moi avec des bâtons? » Et le Philistin maudit David par ses dieux.
44 And he said to David: Come to me, and I will give thy flesh to the birds of the air, and to the beasts of the earth.
Le Philistin dit à David: « Viens à moi, et je donnerai ta chair aux oiseaux du ciel et aux animaux des champs. »
45 And David said to the Philistine: Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, which thou hast defied.
David dit alors au Philistin: « Tu viens à moi avec une épée, une lance et un javelot, mais moi, je viens à toi au nom de l'Éternel des armées, le Dieu des armées d'Israël, que tu as défié.
46 This day, and the Lord will deliver thee into my hand, and I will slay thee, and take away thy head from thee: and I will give the carcasses of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air, and to the beasts of the earth: that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
Aujourd'hui, Yahvé te livre entre mes mains. Je te frapperai et j'ôterai ta tête de dessus toi. Je donnerai aujourd'hui les cadavres de l'armée des Philistins aux oiseaux du ciel et aux animaux sauvages de la terre, afin que toute la terre sache qu'il y a un Dieu en Israël,
47 And all this assembly shall know, that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for it is his battle, and he will deliver you into our hands.
et que toute cette assemblée sache que Yahvé ne sauve pas par l'épée et la lance; car la bataille est à Yahvé, et il vous livrera entre nos mains. »
48 And when the Philistine arose and was coming, and drew nigh to meet David, David made haste, and ran to the fight to meet the Philistine.
Lorsque le Philistin se leva, marcha et s'approcha pour rencontrer David, celui-ci se hâta et courut vers l'armée pour rencontrer le Philistin.
49 And he put his hand into his scrip, and took a stone, and cast it with the sling, and fetching it about struck the Philistine in the forehead: and the stone was fixed in his forehead, and he fell on his face upon the earth.
David mit la main dans son sac, prit une pierre, la lança et frappa le Philistin au front. La pierre s'enfonça dans son front et il tomba à terre, face contre terre.
50 And David prevailed over the Philistine, with a sling and a stone, and he struck, and slew the Philistine. And as David had no sword in his hand,
David l'emporta sur le Philistin avec la fronde et avec la pierre, il frappa le Philistin et le tua, mais il n'y avait pas d'épée dans la main de David.
51 He ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head. And the Philistines seeing that their champion was dead, fled away.
Alors David courut, se plaça au-dessus du Philistin, prit son épée, la tira de son fourreau, le tua et lui coupa la tête avec. Lorsque les Philistins virent que leur champion était mort, ils prirent la fuite.
52 And the men of Israel and Juda rising up shouted, and pursued after the Philistines till they came to the valley and to the gates of Accaron, and there fell many wounded of the Philistines in the way of Saraim, and as far as Geth, and as far as Accaron.
Les hommes d'Israël et de Juda se levèrent et poussèrent des cris, et ils poursuivirent les Philistins jusqu'à Gaï et jusqu'aux portes d'Ékron. Les blessés des Philistins tombèrent sur le chemin de Shaaraïm, jusqu'à Gath et à Ékron.
53 And the children of Israel returning, after they had pursued the Philistines, fell upon their camp.
Les enfants d'Israël revinrent de la poursuite des Philistins, et ils pillèrent leur camp.
54 And David taking the head of the Philistine brought it to Jerusalem: but his armour he put in his tent.
David prit la tête du Philistin et l'apporta à Jérusalem, mais il rangea son armure dans sa tente.
55 Now at the time that Saul saw David going out against the Philistines, he said to Abner the captain of the army: Of what family is this young man descended, Abner? And Abner said: As thy soul liveth, O king, I know not.
Lorsque Saül vit David sortir pour attaquer le Philistin, il dit à Abner, le chef de l'armée: « Abner, à qui appartient ce jeune homme? » Abner a dit: « Je ne saurais dire si ton âme vit, ô roi. »
56 And the king said: Inquire thou, whose son this man is.
Le roi dit: « Demande à qui appartient le fils du jeune homme! »
57 And when David was returned, after the Philistine was slain, Abner took him, and brought him in before Saul, with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
Comme David revenait du massacre du Philistin, Abner le prit et l'amena devant Saül, la tête du Philistin dans sa main.
58 And Saul said to him: Young man, of what family art thou? And David said: I am the son of thy servant Isai the Bethlehemite.
Saül lui dit: « De qui es-tu le fils, jeune homme? » David répondit: « Je suis le fils de ton serviteur Jessé, le Bethléhémite. »
