Romans 7
1 Are ye ignorant, brethren, (for I speak to those knowing law, ) that law rules over a man as long as he lives?
Oder wißt ihr, meine lieben Brüder, wirklich nicht - zu solchen rede ich, die das Gesetz verstehen -, daß das Gesetz über den Menschen herrscht, solange er lebt?
2 For the married woman is bound by law to her husband so long as he is alive; but if the husband should die, she is clear from the law of the husband:
So ist eine Ehefrau an das Gesetz gebunden, solange ihr Mann noch lebt; ist der Mann tot, so ist sie frei vom Gesetz, das sie an den Mann gebunden hat.
3 so then, the husband being alive, she shall be called an adulteress if she be to another man; but if the husband should die, she is free from the law, so as not to be an adulteress, though she be to another man.
Wollte sie also, solange ihr Mann noch lebt, einem anderen Mann gehören, so würde sie als Ehebrecherin gelten. Ist aber ihr Mann gestorben, so ist sie vom Gesetze frei und keine Ehebrecherin, wenn sie einem anderen Manne angehört.
4 So that, my brethren, ye also have been made dead to the law by the body of the Christ, to be to another, who has been raised up from among [the] dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.
Auch ihr, meine lieben Brüder, seid durch den Leib Christi für das Gesetz gestorben, so daß ihr einem anderen angehören dürft, dem, der von den Toten erweckt ward, damit wir fortan für Gott fruchtbar seien.
5 For when we were in the flesh the passions of sins, which [were] by the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit to death;
Solange wir nämlich noch im Fleische lebten, wirkten die durch das Gesetz geweckten sündhaften Leidenschaften in unseren Gliedern, so daß wir für den Tod fruchtbar waren.
6 but now we are clear from the law, having died in that in which we were held, so that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in oldness of letter.
Nun aber sind wir des Gesetzes ledig, weil wir dem, was uns in Banden hielt, gestorben sind. Wir dienen also in einem neuen Geist und nicht in veralteten Gesetzesvorschriften.
7 What shall we say then? [is] the law sin? Far be the thought. But I had not known sin, unless by law: for I had not had conscience also of lust unless the law had said, Thou shalt not lust;
Was weiter? Ist das Gesetz etwa Sünde? Durchaus nicht. Aber wenn das Gesetz nicht wäre, dann wäre ich mit der Sünde nicht bekannt geworden. Ich wüßte auch nichts von der Begierde, wenn das Gesetz nicht sagte: "Du sollst nicht begehren!"
8 but sin, getting a point of attack by the commandment, wrought in me every lust; for without law sin [was] dead.
Die Sünde nahm das Gebot zum Anlaß und weckte jede Gier in mir; denn ohne das Gesetz ist die Sünde tot.
9 But I was alive without law once; but the commandment having come, sin revived, but I died.
Einst lebte ich selber ohne das Gesetz; es kam das Gebot, und da lebte auch die Sünde auf.
10 And the commandment, which [was] for life, was found, [as] to me, itself [to be] unto death:
Ich starb. Es zeigte sich zu meinem Schaden, daß eben das Gesetz, das zum Leben führen sollte, den Tod gebracht hatte.
11 for sin, getting a point of attack by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew [me].
Die Sünde hatte im Gebot ja einen Anlaß; sie hatte mich getäuscht und mich dadurch gemordet.
12 So that the law indeed [is] holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
Nun ist aber doch das Gesetz heilig; auch das Gebot ist heilig und gerecht und gut.
13 Did then that which is good become death to me? Far be the thought. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death to me by that which is good; in order that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
So wäre das Gute für mich zum Tode geworden? Durchaus nicht. Es war die Sünde. Sie sollte als Sünde offenkundig werden dadurch, daß sie mir den Tod schuf durch das, was an sich gut war; die Sünde sollte über alle Maßen sündhaft erwiesen werden durch das Gebot.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am fleshly, sold under sin.
Wir wissen: Das Gesetz ist geistig, ich aber bin fleischlich und an die Sünde verkauft.
15 For that which I do, I do not own: for not what I will, this I do; but what I hate, this I practise.
Das, was ich tue, ist mir nicht verständlich; denn ich tue nicht, was ich will, sondern was ich hasse.
16 But if what I do not will, this I practise, I consent to the law that [it is] right.
Doch, wenn ich tue, was ich nicht will, so gebe ich damit zu, daß das Gesetz gut ist.
17 Now then [it is] no longer I [that] do it, but the sin that dwells in me.
Dann aber handle ja nicht ich, vielmehr handelt die Sünde, die in mir wohnt.
18 For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, good does not dwell: for to will is there with me, but to do right [I find] not.
Ich weiß: In mir, das heißt in meiner Sinnlichkeit, wohnt nichts Gutes. Es fällt mir zwar leicht, das Gute zu wollen, doch nicht in gleicher Weise, es zu tun.
19 For I do not practise the good that I will; but the evil I do not will, that I do.
Tue ich doch nicht das Gute, das ich will; ich tue, was ich nicht will, das Böse.
20 But if what I do not will, this I practise, [it is] no longer I [that] do it, but the sin that dwells in me.
Doch wenn ich das, was ich nicht will, tue, dann bin nicht ich es, der handelt, vielmehr ist es die Sünde, die in mir wohnt.
21 I find then the law upon me who will to practise what is right, that with me evil is there.
Ich finde somit das Gesetz: Wenn ich das Gute tun möchte, liegt mir das Böse näher.
22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man:
Dem inneren Menschen nach habe ich ja Freude am Gesetz Gottes.
23 but I see another law in my members, warring in opposition to the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which exists in my members.
Ich sehe aber auch ein ganz davon verschiedenes Gesetz in meinen Gliedern, das dem Gesetz meiner Vernunft widerstreitet und mich im Gesetz der Sünde gefangenhält, das in meinen Gliedern wohnt.
24 O wretched man that I [am]! who shall deliver me out of this body of death?
Ich unglückseliger Mensch! Wer wird mich aus einem Leib erlösen, der solches Sterben in sich trägt?
25 I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then I myself with the mind serve God's law; but with the flesh sin's law.
Dank sei Gott - durch Jesus Christus, unseren Herrn. Also bin auch ich selbst in meinem Verstande zwar dem Gesetz Gottes unterworfen, mit meinem Leib aber dem Gesetz der Sünde.
