Psalms 60

1 To the chief Musician. On Shushan. Testimony. Michtam of David; to teach: when he strove with the Syrians of Mesopotamia, and the Syrians of Zobah, and Joab returned, and smote the Edomites in the valley of salt, twelve thousand. O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us, thou hast been displeased: restore us again.

Dem Musikmeister, nach (der Singweise = Melodie) »Lilie des Zeugnisses«; ein Lied Davids zum Lehren, als er mit den Syrern von Mesopotamien und mit den Syrern von Zoba Krieg führte und Joab zurückkehrte und die Edomiter im Salztal schlug, zwölftausend Mann. Gott, du hast uns verworfen, uns zersprengt,

2 Thou hast made the earth to tremble, thou hast rent it: heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh.

Du hast das Land erschüttert, hast es zerrissen: o heile seine Risse, denn es wankt!

3 Thou hast shewn thy people hard things; thou hast made us to drink the wine of bewilderment.

Dein Volk hast du Hartes erleben lassen, hast Taumelwein uns zu trinken gegeben;

4 Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth, (Selah)

doch deinen Getreuen hast eine Flagge du wehen lassen, damit sie sich flüchten konnten vor dem Bogen (des Feindes). (SELA)

5 That thy beloved ones may be delivered. Save with thy right hand, and answer me.

Daß deine Geliebten gerettet werden, hilf uns mit deiner Rechten, erhöre uns!

6 God hath spoken in his holiness: I will exult, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.

Gott hat in seiner Heiligkeit gesprochen: »(Als Sieger) will ich frohlocken, will Sichem verteilen und das Tal von Sukkoth (als Beutestück) vermessen.

7 Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine, and Ephraim is the strength of my head; Judah is my law-giver;

Mein ist Gilead, mein auch Manasse, und Ephraim ist meines Hauptes Schutzwehr, Juda mein Herrscherstab.

8 Moab is my wash-pot; upon Edom will I cast my sandal; Philistia, shout aloud because of me.

Moab (dagegen) ist mein Waschbecken, auf Edom werfe ich meinen Schuh; jauchze mir zu, Philisterland!«

9 Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me unto Edom?

Wer führt mich hin zur festen Stadt, wer geleitet mich bis Edom?

10 [Wilt] not thou, O God, who didst cast us off? and didst not go forth, O God, with our armies?

Hast nicht du uns, o Gott, verworfen und ziehst nicht aus, o Gott, mit unsern Heeren?

11 Give us help from trouble; for vain is man's deliverance.

O schaff uns Hilfe gegen den Feind! denn nichtig ist Menschenhilfe.

12 Through God we shall do valiantly; and he it is that will tread down our adversaries.

Mit Gott werden wir Taten vollführen, und er wird unsre Bedränger zertreten.
