Proverbs 23
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider well who is before thee;
Cuando te sientes a comer con un ʼadón, Considera bien lo que está delante de ti,
2 and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
Y pon cuchillo a tu garganta Si tienes gran apetito.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties; for they are deceitful food.
No codicies sus manjares delicados, Porque son pan de engaño.
4 Weary not thyself to become rich; cease from thine own intelligence:
No te afanes por hacer riquezas. Sé prudente y desiste.
5 wilt thou set thine eyes upon it, it is gone; for indeed it maketh itself wings and it flieth away as an eagle towards the heavens.
Si les diriges una mirada, ya no están. Les salieron alas como un águila que vuela a los cielos.
6 Eat thou not the food of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties.
No comas pan con el avaro, Ni codicies sus manjares,
7 For as he thinketh in his soul, so is he. Eat and drink! will he say unto thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Porque como piensa en su corazón, así es. Come y bebe, te dirá, Pero su corazón no está contigo.
8 Thy morsel which thou hast eaten must thou vomit up, and thou wilt have wasted thy sweet words.
Vomitarás el bocado que comiste Y perderás tus suaves palabras.
9 Speak not in the ears of a foolish [man], for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
No hables a oídos del insensato, Porque despreciará la prudencia de tus razones.
10 Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
No cambies de lugar el lindero antiguo, Ni entres en el campo de los huérfanos,
11 for their redeemer is mighty; he will plead their cause against thee.
Porque su Redentor es fuerte, Y defenderá contra ti la causa de ellos.
12 Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
Aplica tu corazón a la enseñanza, Y tus oídos a las palabras sabias.
13 Withhold not correction from the child; for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die:
No retraigas la corrección al muchacho, Si lo castigas con vara, no morirá.
Lo castigarás con vara, Y librarás su alma del Seol. (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine;
Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, También a mí se me alegrará el corazón,
16 and my reins shall exult, when thy lips speak right things.
Mi ser interno también se alegrará Cuando tus labios hablen cosas rectas.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners, but [be thou] in the fear of Jehovah all the day;
No tenga tu corazón envidia de los pecadores. Más bien, persevera en el temor a Yavé en todo tiempo.
18 for surely there is a result, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
Porque ciertamente hay un porvenir, Y tu esperanza no será frustrada.
19 Thou, my son, hear and be wise, and direct thy heart in the way.
Escucha tú, hijo mío, sé sabio, Y dirige tu corazón por el buen camino.
20 Be not among winebibbers, among riotous eaters of flesh.
No estés con los bebedores de vino, Ni con los comedores de carne,
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness clotheth with rags.
Porque el ebrio y el glotón empobrecerán, Y el dormitar hará vestir harapos.
22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Escucha a tu padre que te engendró, Y no desprecies a tu madre cuando sea anciana.
23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; wisdom, and instruction, and intelligence.
Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas, También sabiduría, instrucción y entendimiento.
24 The father of a righteous [man] shall greatly rejoice, and he that begetteth a wise [son] shall have joy of him:
El padre del justo se alegrará en gran manera. El que engendra un hijo sabio se gozará con él.
25 let thy father and thy mother have joy, and let her that bore thee rejoice.
Alégrense tu padre y tu madre, Y regocíjese la que te dio a luz.
26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón Y observen tus ojos mis caminos.
27 For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
Porque fosa profunda es la prostituta, Y pozo angosto la mujer extraña.
28 She also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the treacherous among men.
También ella, como asaltante, acecha, Y entre los hombres multiplica a los traicioneros.
29 Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who contentions? Who complaining? Who wounds without cause? Who redness of eyes?
¿Para quién es el ay? ¿Para quién las tristezas? ¿Para quién las contiendas? ¿Para quién el quejido? ¿Para quién las heridas sin causa? ¿Para quién los ojos enrojecidos?
30 — They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine.
Para el que se detiene en el vino, Para los que prueban licores mezclados.
31 Look not upon the wine when it is red, when it sparkleth in the cup, and goeth down smoothly:
No mires al vino cuando rojea, Y lanza destellos en la copa, Porque se entra suavemente,
32 at the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
Pero al fin, muerde como una serpiente. Pica como una víbora.
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall speak froward things;
Tus ojos mirarán cosas extrañas, Y tu corazón hablará cosas perversas.
34 and thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, and as he that lieth down upon the top of a mast:
Serás como el que está acostado en alta mar, Como el que duerme en el palo de un velero,
35 — “They have smitten me, [and] I am not sore; they have beaten me, [and] I knew it not. When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.”
Y dirás: Me golpearon y no me dolió, Me azotaron, pero no lo sentí. Cuando despierte, lo volveré a buscar.
