Proverbs 23
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider well who is before thee;
૧જ્યારે તું કોઈ અધિકારીની સાથે જમવા બેસે, ત્યારે તારી આગળ જે પીરસેલુ હોય તેનું ખૂબ ધ્યાનથી અવલોકન કર.
2 and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
૨જો તું ખાઉધરો હોય, તો તારે ગળે છરી મૂક.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties; for they are deceitful food.
૩સ્વાદિષ્ટ વાનગીઓથી લોભાઈ ન જા, કારણ કે તે કપટી ભોજન છે.
4 Weary not thyself to become rich; cease from thine own intelligence:
૪ધનવાન થવા માટે તન તોડીને મહેનત ન કર; હોશિયાર થઈને પડતું મૂકજે.
5 wilt thou set thine eyes upon it, it is gone; for indeed it maketh itself wings and it flieth away as an eagle towards the heavens.
૫જે કંઈ વિસાતનું નથી તે પર તું તારી દૃષ્ટિ ચોંટાડશે અને અચાનક દ્રવ્ય આકાશમાં ઊડી જશે અને ગરુડ પક્ષીના જેવી પાંખો નિશ્ચે ધારણ કરે છે.
6 Eat thou not the food of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties.
૬કંજૂસ માણસનું અન્ન ન ખા તેની સ્વાદિષ્ટ વાનગીથી તું લોભાઈ ન જા,
7 For as he thinketh in his soul, so is he. Eat and drink! will he say unto thee; but his heart is not with thee.
૭કારણ કે જેવો તે વિચાર કરે છે, તેવો જ તે છે. તે તને કહે છે, “ખાઓ અને પીઓ!” પણ તેનું મન તારા પ્રત્યે નથી.
8 Thy morsel which thou hast eaten must thou vomit up, and thou wilt have wasted thy sweet words.
૮જે કોળિયો તેં ખાધો હશે, તે તારે ઓકી કાઢવો પડશે અને તારાં મીઠાં વચનો વ્યર્થ જશે.
9 Speak not in the ears of a foolish [man], for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
૯મૂર્ખના સાંભળતાં બોલીશ નહિ, કેમ કે તારા શબ્દોના ડહાપણનો તે તિરસ્કાર કરશે.
10 Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
૧૦પ્રાચીન સીમા પથ્થરોને ખસેડીશ નહિ અથવા અનાથના ખેતરોમાં પ્રવેશ કરીશ નહિ.
11 for their redeemer is mighty; he will plead their cause against thee.
૧૧કારણ કે તેઓનો ઉદ્ધારનાર બળવાન છે તે તારી વિરુદ્ધ તેના પક્ષની હિમાયત કરશે.
12 Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
૧૨શિખામણ પર તારું મન લગાડ અને ડહાપણના શબ્દોને તારા કાન દે.
13 Withhold not correction from the child; for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die:
૧૩બાળકને ઠપકો આપતાં ખચકાઈશ નહિ; કેમ કે જો તું તેને સોટી મારીશ તો તે કંઈ મરી જશે નહિ.
૧૪જો તું તેને સોટીથી મારીશ, તો તું તેના આત્માને શેઓલમાં જતાં ઉગારશે. (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine;
૧૫મારા દીકરા, જો તારું હૃદય જ્ઞાની હોય, તો મારું હૃદય હરખાશે.
16 and my reins shall exult, when thy lips speak right things.
૧૬જ્યારે તારા હોઠો નેક વાત બોલશે, ત્યારે મારું અંતઃકરણ હરખાશે.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners, but [be thou] in the fear of Jehovah all the day;
૧૭તારા મનમાં પાપીની ઈર્ષ્યા ન કરીશ, પણ હંમેશા યહોવાહથી ડરીને ચાલજે.
18 for surely there is a result, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
૧૮ત્યાં ચોક્કસ ભવિષ્ય છે અને તારી આશા સાર્થક થશે.
19 Thou, my son, hear and be wise, and direct thy heart in the way.
૧૯મારા દીકરા, મારી વાત સાંભળ અને ડાહ્યો થા અને તારા હૃદયને સાચા માર્ગમાં દોરજે.
20 Be not among winebibbers, among riotous eaters of flesh.
૨૦દ્રાક્ષારસ પીનારાઓની અથવા માંસના ખાઉધરાની સોબત ન કર.
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness clotheth with rags.
૨૧કારણ કે દ્રાક્ષારસ પીનારાઓ તથા ખાઉધરાઓ કંગાલવસ્થામાં આવશે અને ઊંઘ તેમને ચીંથરેહાલ કરી દેશે.
22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
૨૨તારા પોતાના પિતાનું કહેવું સાંભળ અને જ્યારે તારી માતા વૃદ્ધ થાય ત્યારે તેને તુચ્છ ન ગણ.
23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; wisdom, and instruction, and intelligence.
૨૩સત્યને ખરીદ, પણ તેને વેચીશ નહિ; હા, ડહાપણ, શિખામણ તથા બુદ્ધિને પણ ખરીદ.
24 The father of a righteous [man] shall greatly rejoice, and he that begetteth a wise [son] shall have joy of him:
૨૪નીતિમાન દીકરાનો પિતા આનંદથી હરખાય છે અને જે દીકરો શાણો છે તે તેના જન્મ આપનારને આનંદ આપશે.
25 let thy father and thy mother have joy, and let her that bore thee rejoice.
૨૫તારા માતાપિતા પ્રસન્ન થાય એવું કર અને તારી જન્મ આપનાર માતાને હર્ષ થાય એવું કર.
26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
૨૬મારા દીકરા, મને તારું હૃદય આપ અને તારી આંખો મારા માર્ગોને લક્ષમાં રાખે.
27 For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
૨૭ગણિકા એક ઊંડી ખાઈ છે અને પરસ્ત્રી એ સાંકડો કૂવો છે.
28 She also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the treacherous among men.
૨૮તે લૂંટારાની જેમ સંતાઈને તાકી રહે છે અને માણસોમાં કપટીઓનો વધારો કરે છે.
29 Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who contentions? Who complaining? Who wounds without cause? Who redness of eyes?
૨૯કોને અફસોસ છે? કોણ ગમગીન છે? કોણ ઝઘડે છે? કોણ ફરિયાદ કરે છે? કોણ વગર કારણે ઘવાય છે? કોની આંખોમાં રતાશ છે?
30 — They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine.
૩૦જે ઘણીવાર સુધી દ્રાક્ષારસ પિધા કરે છે તેઓને, જેઓ મિશ્ર મધ શોધવા જાય છે તેઓને અફસોસ છે.
31 Look not upon the wine when it is red, when it sparkleth in the cup, and goeth down smoothly:
૩૧જ્યારે દ્રાક્ષારસ લાલ હોય, જ્યારે તે પ્યાલામાં પોતાનો રંગ પ્રકાશતો હોય અને જ્યારે તે સરળતાથી પેટમાં ઊતરતો હોય, ત્યારે તે પર દૃષ્ટિ ન કર.
32 at the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
૩૨આખરે તે સર્પની જેમ કરડે છે અને નાગની જેમ ડસે છે.
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall speak froward things;
૩૩તારી આંખો અજાણ્યા વસ્તુઓ જોશે અને તારું હૃદય વિપરીત બાબતો બોલશે.
34 and thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, and as he that lieth down upon the top of a mast:
૩૪હા, કોઈ સમુદ્રમાં સૂતો હોય કે, કોઈ વહાણના સઢના થાંભલાની ટોચ પર આડો પડેલો હોય, તેના જેવો તું થશે.
35 — “They have smitten me, [and] I am not sore; they have beaten me, [and] I knew it not. When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.”
૩૫તું કહેશે કે, “તેઓએ મારા પર પ્રહાર કર્યો!” “પણ મને વાગ્યું નહિ. તેઓએ મને માર્યો, પણ મને કંઈ ખબર પડી નહિ. હું ક્યારે જાગીશ? મારે ફરી એકવાર પીવું છે.”
