Proverbs 20
1 Wine is a scorner, strong drink is raging; and whoso erreth thereby is not wise.
O vinho é escarnecedor, a bebida forte alvoraçadora; e todo aquelle que n'elles errar nunca será sabio.
2 The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: he that provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.
Como o bramido do leão é o terror do rei, o que o provoca a ira pecca contra a sua propria alma.
3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife; but every fool rusheth into it.
Honra é do homem desviar-se do pleito, mas todo o tolo se entremette n'elle.
4 The sluggard will not plough by reason of the winter; he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
O preguiçoso não lavrará por causa do inverno, pelo que mendigará na sega, porém nada receberá.
5 Counsel in the heart of man is deep water, and a man of understanding draweth it out.
Como as aguas profundas é o conselho no coração do homem; mas o homem d'intelligencia o tirará para fóra.
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; but a faithful man who shall find?
Cada um da multidão dos homens apregoa a sua beneficencia; porém o homem fiel, quem é o que o achará?
7 The righteous walketh in his integrity: blessed are his children after him!
O justo anda na sua sinceridade; bemaventurados serão os seus filhos depois d'elle.
8 A king sitting on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
Assentando-se o rei no throno do juizo, com os seus olhos dissipa todo o mal.
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
Quem podéra dizer: Purifiquei o meu coração, limpo estou de meu peccado!
10 Divers weights, divers measures, even both of them are abomination to Jehovah.
Duas sortes de peso, e duas sortes de medida, são abominação ao Senhor, tanto uma como outra.
11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
Até a creança se dará a conhecer pelas suas acções, se a sua obra será pura e recta
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them.
O ouvido que ouve, e o olho que vê, o Senhor os fez a ambos.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
Não ames o somno, para que não empobreças; abre os teus olhos, e te fartarás de pão
14 Bad! bad! saith the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
Nada vale, nada vale, dirá o comprador, mas, indo-se, então se gabará.
15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies; but the lips of knowledge are a precious Jewel.
Ha oiro e abundancia de rubins, mas os labios do conhecimento são joia preciosa.
16 Take his garment that is become surety [for] another, and hold him in pledge for strangers.
Quando alguem fica por fiador do estranho, toma-lhe a sua roupa, e o penhora pela estranha.
17 Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Suave é ao homem o pão de mentira, mas depois a sua bocca se encherá de pedrinhas d'areia.
18 Plans are established by counsel; and with good advice make war.
Cada pensamento com conselho se confirma, e com conselhos prudentes faze a guerra.
19 He that goeth about talebearing revealeth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that openeth his lips.
O que anda murmurando descobre o segredo; pelo que com o que afaga com seus beiços não te entremettas.
20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in the blackest darkness.
O que a seu pae ou a sua mãe amaldiçoar, apagar-se-lhe-ha a sua lampada em trevas negras.
21 An inheritance obtained hastily at the beginning will not be blessed in the end.
Adquirindo-se apressadamente a herança no principio, o seu fim não será bemdito.
22 Say not, I will recompense evil: wait on Jehovah, and he shall save thee.
Não digas: Vingar-me-hei do mal: espera pelo Senhor, e elle te livrará.
23 Divers weights are an abomination unto Jehovah; and a false balance is not good.
Duas sortes de peso são abominaveis ao Senhor, e balanças enganosas não são boas.
24 The steps of a man are from Jehovah; and how can a man understand his own way?
Os passos do homem são dirigidos pelo Senhor: o homem, pois, como entenderá o seu caminho?
25 It is a snare to a man rashly to say, It is hallowed, and after vows to make inquiry.
Laço é para o homem engulir o que é sancto; e, feitos os votos, então inquirir.
26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
O rei sabio dissipa os impios e torna sobre elles a roda.
27 Man's spirit is the lamp of Jehovah, searching all the inner parts of the belly.
A alma do homem é a lampada do Senhor, que esquadrinha todo o mais intimo do ventre.
28 Mercy and truth preserve the king; and he upholdeth his throne by mercy.
Benignidade e verdade guardam ao rei, e com benignidade sustem elle o seu throno.
29 The glory of young men is their strength; and the beauty of old men is the grey head.
O ornato dos mancebos é a sua força: e a belleza dos velhos as cãs.
30 Wounding stripes purge away evil, and strokes [purge] the inner parts of the belly.
Os vergões das feridas são a purificação dos maus, como tambem as pancadas que penetram até o mais intimo do ventre.
