Numbers 25
1 And Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab.
Le peuple demeura en Settim, et il se souilla par la prostitution des filles de Moab.
2 And they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.
Elles le convièrent aux sacrifices de leurs idoles; il mangea de leurs victimes, et il adora leurs dieux.
3 And Israel joined himself to Baal-Peor; and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel.
Israël fut consacré à Belphégor, et, en son cœur, le Seigneur s'irrita contre lui.
4 And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may be turned away from Israel.
Le Seigneur dit à Moïse: Prends tous les chefs du peuple, et, à la lumière du soleil, fais un exemple devant le Seigneur; alors, la colère du Seigneur se détournera d'Israël.
5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel, Slay every one his men that have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.
Moïse dit donc aux tribus d'Israël: Tuez ceux de vos frères qui sont consacrés à Belphégor.
6 And behold, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianitish woman to his brethren, in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the entrance of the tent of meeting.
Or, l'un des fils d'Israël survint, et entraîna son frère chez une Madianite, devant Moïse et devant toute la synagogue des fils d'Israël, et ceux-ci se prirent à pleurer devant la porte du tabernacle du témoignage.
7 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, and rose up from among the assembly, and took a javelin in his hand,
Ce que voyant Phinéès, fils d'Eléazar, fils du grand prêtre Aaron, il se leva du milieu de l'assemblée, et prit à la main une javeline,
8 and he went after the man of Israel into the tent-chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. And the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
Et il entra dans la chambre sur les pas de l'Israélite, et il perça l'homme et la femme, et celle-ci eut les entrailles déchirées; et la plaie qui affligeait Israël cessa.
9 And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.
Cette plaie avait fait périr vingt-quatre mille âmes.
10 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
Le Seigneur parla ensuite à Moïse, disant:
11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
Phinéès, fils d'Eléazar, fils du grand prêtre Aaron, vient d'apaiser ma colère et de la détourner des fils d'Israël, contre lesquels je suis plein de jalousie; je n'ai pas exterminé les fils d'Israël, quoique je fusse jaloux.
12 Therefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace!
Répète ceci: J'accorde à Phinéès une alliance de paix.
13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.
Cette alliance sacerdotale sera perpétuelle pour lui et sa postérité, parce qu'il a été zélé pour son Dieu, et qu'il l'a apaisé en faveur des fils d'Israël.
14 And the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, the prince of a father's house of the Simeonites.
L'Israélite, frappé avec la Madianite, se nommait Zambri; il était fils de Salmon, l'un des chefs de famille de la tribu de Siméon.
15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was tribal head of a father's house in Midian.
Et la Madianite s'appelait Cozbi; elle était fille de Sur, chef de la nation d'Ommoth, qui est une famille issue de Madian.
16 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
Et le Seigneur parla à Moïse, disant: Parle aux fils d'Israël, dis-leur:
17 Harass the Midianites, and smite them,
Soyez ennemis des Madianites; frappez-les,
18 for they have harassed you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor.
Parce qu'avec leurs ruses ils sont vos ennemis; ils vous ont trompés par le moyen de Phégor et de Cozbi, fille d'un chef de Madian, leur sœur, celle qui a été frappée le jour de la plaie que vous avait attirée Phégor.
